"Unfortunately, for the last 50 years, corruption and crime have become entrenched in Pakistan. As a nation, we have not yet reached a point where we stand united against these issues. The reason is that as individuals, we are all affected by the corrupt society. It's not just the ruling elite, bureaucrats, judges, generals, journalists, and lawyers who are involved, but each of us as individuals is also implicated to some extent. Whenever solid evidence of corruption comes to light, everyone involved tries to protect their interests. We, as individuals, also defend our favorite personalities. In Pakistan, it's easy for the privileged and professionals to escape the consequences of corruption and crime. However, they forget that there will come a day when each of us has to answer for our actions. We also forget that we are accountable for our efforts to protect them. Pakistan can only change when each of us not only speaks out against corruption and crime but also unites against this social evil.

As I was enjoying the long weekend, I spotted this floating billboard at JBR Beach, cutting across the shimmering blue waters—a stark reminder of how advertising has permeated even the most tranquil spaces. Dubai’s outdoor advertising scene has always been bold, from skyscraper-sized digital screens to ads embedded in water fountains. But now, the sea? Floating billboards, like this one, are becoming an increasingly common sight in popular destinations like Miami Beach and now Dubai. They’re marketed as the next big thing in outdoor advertising—unmissable, unconventional, and innovative. From a marketer’s perspective, it’s a dream. You’ve got a captive audience of beachgoers, relaxed and enjoying the scenery, with little else competing for their attention. But is that a good thing? Critics argue that this kind of advertising disrupts the serenity of natural spaces and contributes to visual and even environmental pollution. Beaches are sanctuaries, places to unplug, not arenas for a brand war. There’s also the question of sustainability—what happens to marine life or the natural environment when advertising starts invading the waters? That said, it’s impossible not to marvel at the creativity and audacity of it all. In a city like Dubai, where innovation knows no bounds, this kind of marketing feels almost inevitable. But as we continue to blur the lines between public spaces and commercial platforms, I wonder: where do we draw the line? During my recent visit to Dubai, I was blown away by the extensive use of digital billboards – they’re everywhere, and it’s clear that many spaces are embracing this trend. The most fascinating part was the impact of digital out-of-home (OOH) in modern trade settings, where these billboards directly influence purchasing decisions. From pillars to walls, doors to corners, backdrops, shelves, and even trolleys – digital billboards are transforming how brands communicate with customers. The food sections featured recipe videos, while skincare section had benefit-driven content on how to use the products. In the fish section, a digital aquarium mimicked nature – making it truly immersive! What stood out was how these strategically placed digital billboards communicate the right message, at the right time, in the right way – helping customers make quick, informed decisions. In India, we are just scratching the surface. Both modern and general trade are catching on, and it’s safe to say that digital billboards, in every shape and form, are about to see massive growth.
