As a healthcare professional who has witnessed the transformation of Saudi Arabia's #medical landscape, I can't help but marvel at how #telemedicine has become more than just a COVID-era necessity, it's now a cornerstone of our healthcare future. The numbers tell a compelling story. While global telemedicine adoption has seen remarkable growth, Saudi Arabia stands at the forefront of this #digital transformation. What fascinates me most is how we've overcome initial resistance to virtual care, both from practitioners and patients, to create a system that's increasingly becoming our new normal. Yet, what truly excites me isn't just the convenience factor. It's how telemedicine aligns perfectly with Vision 2030's healthcare transformation goals. By expanding healthcare access to remote areas, we're not just saving time, we're saving lives. Telemedicine has exploded in popularity, a 2023 Rock Health report shows 80% of people have tried it at least once. The service is gaining ground where it's needed most, with a 12% rise among seniors and a 13% increase in rural areas. Younger folks are leading the charge, with 74% of #millennials now choosing virtual visits over in-person care. The real #success story? Virtual mental healthcare, where 96% of #telepsychiatry patients report being highly satisfied with their experience. What stands out to me is that #telemedicine isn't just an alternative to traditional #healthcare, it's a vital component of a modern, efficient healthcare system. As we push toward Vision 2030, integrating digital health solutions like telemedicine isn't optional, but imperative. However, we must also acknowledge the challenges we face to perfect this advancement: infrastructure readiness, digital literacy among older populations, and the need for standardized protocols across healthcare facilities. For us in Saudi Arabia, this isn't about following global #trends. It's about leading them. The healthcare sector will remain a priority for Vision 2030 objectives. In 2024, the sector's budget allocation ranks third, trailing only military and general items, underscoring the government's ongoing prioritization. The budget statement outlined projects aligned with Vision 2030 goals, focusing on workforce capabilities and system capacity. This is expected to boost health expenditure, prompting a revision of the 2022-2027 CAGR forecast to 5.9% (previously 4.3%). With faster economic growth driven by high oil prices and a strong non-oil sector, diversification and healthcare goals are set to advance. Saudi Arabia has announced several healthcare projects for 2024 that will aim to improve service quality, increase system capacity and strengthen preventative measures. Initiatives aligning with Vision 2030 and the Health Sector Transformation Programme include launching the National Health Emergency Operation Center in 2024. This project targets workforce development through training, research, and partnerships. The kingdom plans to increase bed capacity by building multiple hospitals, aiming for 1,100 beds. Additionally, new legislation and the World Health Organization Collaborating Centre for Nutrition and Food aim to improve public health through preventive measures. Recent healthcare advances support ongoing progress towards Vision 2030 objectives. Saudi Arabia initiated its national electronic health record system in 2023 under the NPHIES, enabling patient data exchange. With 14.7 million beneficiaries linked, this boosts healthcare efficiency and informs decisions. State-funded insurance for all by 2026 enhances access and aligns with Vision 2030, stressing accessible healthcare and digital integration. The private sector's healthcare contribution is increasing due to government efforts to enhance spending efficiency and involve the private sector more. Private health expenditure is expected to exceed public spending, driven by the growing private sector's role and demand for private healthcare. Adaptive Leadership and Greenfield Projects: a personal firsthand reflection. I am honored to be the CEO of Kindom Health, a Saudi-Jordanian Investment Company (SJIC) project, building a state of the art healthcare project consisting of a co-located medical school and a University Hospital in Amman-Jordan. The nature of healthcare and medical education, coupled with the challenges of building a new facility from scratch, creates a highly complex and dynamic environment. I found it still complex requiring strong adaptive skills despite my previous experience in similar projects and more than 40 years of international, regional, and domestic healthcare and education experience. The unprecedented scale of complexity (immense planning, coordination,multiple stakeholders, intricate systems, unforeseen challenges, etc), regulatory hurdles, technological advancements and its integration, people-centered design, and talent acquisition, retention and development, requires leaders who 1) embrace uncertainty (essentially to dance with ambiguity, as I cited to Mr. Abdullah Aljundi, one week after the project launch), 2) foster innovation, 3) build resilience and 4) focus on the purpose at hand: in our case a strategically desinged project that balances community benefits and financial performance. Attributes that contribute to the ability of navigating complex situations, and achieving positive outcomes to the organization are of paramount importance. In my opinion, self awareness, meaning recognizing potential for making errors or wrong advice, effective communication, and respect of stakeholders are particularly important in greenfield and complex projects. Self awareness humbles even the most extensive experience. Recently, I have been through a difficult matter that required immense amount of coordination and understanding. Self awareness was an attribute that helped me navigate through the complex situation, which now has been resolved maintaining respect to all involved in that matter. I was self conscious and aware that I might be wrong. Although I am described by others as servant leader (prioritising the needs of the organisation and team over my own interest), I found adaptive leadership (adjusting the approach based on the situation) very essential in complex situations such as our own current greenfield project. On Tuesday Candesic Managing Partner Dr Leonid Shapiro chaired an exciting and informative panel alongside Dr. Meshari F. Alwashmi, CEO of amplifAI health, Dr Fahad Attar, CEO of We Healthify, and Eng Basim Albeladi, MBA, CEO of لبيه | Labayh Healthcare Company, on how to successfully launch and attract investment into healthcare startups in KSA to a packed audience at the Global Health Exhibition - ملتقى الصحة العالمي in Riyadh. There was reason for much excitement as, according to the Vision for 2030 shared at the exhibition, Saudi Arabia is set to become a global health hub, and it proved that by announcing over SAR 50 billion ($13.3bn) in health investments in one day! Startups and innovation will be an integral part of achieving this ambitious vision. Later that day, Leonid also spoke on another panel about the growing opportunities in medtech and pharma in Saudi Arabia. The panel couldn’t have been better timed as included in the investments announced was a pharma partnership between National Unified Procurement Company "NUPCO", Novo Nordisk and Sanofi worth SAR 4 billion.  Though it isn’t all about the price tag but the ability to build and implement successful healthcare systems that provide good outcomes for patients and stakeholders, KSA is on its way. Next week marks the start of @Abu Dhabi Global Healthcare Week – a new platform seeking to disrupt and bring discussion about the future of health onto centre stage. For this inaugural launch year, and hopefully for many to come, my colleagues and I from Department of Health Abu Dhabi will act as event hosts, alongside Abu Dhabi Public Health Center - مركز أبوظبي للصحة العامة . Saudi Arabia is increasingly recognizing the importance of aligning its policies and initiatives with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). 🏆The power of public-private partnerships in action! 🤝🏼Over the last few years the trends in regional #PPPs have been transforming the vision for patient centric care in the GCC. 🇦🇪🇸🇦AstraZeneca started with a partnership with the Department of Health Abu Dhabi in June to develop a Centre of Excellence for Rare Diseases and is now following with another centre in Saudi Arabia. 🏥These centres will be transformational for patients, streamlining paths to diagnosis, management and monitoring, whilst bringing in best in class clinicians to support the patients that need them the most. 🌟As the region continues to drive towards PPPs, this is a great example of what shared objectives and vision can lead to. #RareDiseasesMENA #RareDisease

‘Quality’ is a word we love when marketing but hate when budgeting. Thankfully Prince Faisal bin Salman has launched the Al-Shifa Endowment which will make marketing and budgeting much easier. It’s designed to broaden healthcare coverage for those who don’t yet have access to healthcare in the KSA. But more importantly, it’s designed to bring them the quality of healthcare that they deserve. It builds on the Al-Shifa fund introduced last Ramadan and has already attracted more than US $10 million in donations. Considering this, what does ‘quality’ mean for such a fund? It means building new facilities and updating existing ones. It means providing counseling services to those who need them. It means establishing collective insurance funds to give access to those who don’t have it. It means harnessing zakat for the collective health of everyone. Most importantly, it means having the foresight and will to implement such strategies. You see, ‘quality’ can be found in your staff, your techniques, or your technologies. But underneath all this, you must have a foundation of quality leadership. Thankfully, the Kingdom has things well in hand in that regard. #Healthcare #KSA #HealthTech #Leadership
