Adaptive Leadership and Greenfield Projects: a personal firsthand reflection. I am honored to be the CEO of Kindom Health, a Saudi-Jordanian Investment Company (SJIC) project, building a state of the art healthcare project consisting of a co-located medical school and a University Hospital in Amman-Jordan. The nature of healthcare and medical education, coupled with the challenges of building a new facility from scratch, creates a highly complex and dynamic environment. I found it still complex requiring strong adaptive skills despite my previous experience in similar projects and more than 40 years of international, regional, and domestic healthcare and education experience. The unprecedented scale of complexity (immense planning, coordination, multiple stakeholders, intricate systems, unforeseen challenges, etc), regulatory hurdles, technological advancements and its integration, people-centered design, and talent acquisition, retention and development, requires leaders who 1) embrace uncertainty (essentially to dance with ambiguity, as I cited to Mr. Abdullah Aljundi, one week after the project launch), 2) foster innovation, 3) build resilience and 4) focus on the purpose at hand: in our case a strategically desinged project that balances community benefits and financial performance. Attributes that contribute to the ability of navigating complex situations, and achieving positive outcomes to the organization are of paramount importance. In my opinion, self awareness, meaning recognizing potential for making errors or wrong advice, effective communication, and respect of stakeholders are particularly important in greenfield and complex projects. Self awareness humbles even the most extensive experience. Recently, I have been through a difficult matter that required immense amount of coordination and understanding. Self awareness was an attribute that helped me navigate through the complex situation, which now has been resolved maintaining respect to all involved in that matter. I was self conscious and aware that I might be wrong. Although I am described by others as servant leader (prioritising the needs of the organisation and team over my own interest), I found adaptive leadership (adjusting the approach based on the situation) very essential in complex situations such as our own current greenfield project. The greater the cause, the smaller challenges seem. Mahmoud M. Sarhan, MD.
Amazing reflection - thank you for sharing 🙏🏼
Thank you, Dr. Sarhan, for your inspiring reflection on adaptive leadership in greenfield projects. It’s been an honor to work with you in tailoring your vision into a transformative healthcare landmark that will serve generations to come. Your emphasis on self-awareness and communication truly resonates. I’m proud to be part of a team setting new standards in healthcare and education, and we can’t wait to see this project come to life.
leadership is crucial in navigating the complexities of greenfield projects, especially in healthcare. Your reflection on embracing uncertainty and fostering resilience is both inspiring and insightful.Mahmoud Sarhan, MD, MMM, CPE
Thank you for sharing this Mahmoud Sarhan, MD, MMM, CPE These are great reflections and insights. Serious efforts should be made to gather the lessons drawn from this project, along with insights from owners of other projects ( that failed and succeeded) who have grappled with uncertainty and challenges. Our country needs this to increase the success rate of its mega projects and shorten their execution time.
إذا غامرت في شرف مروم فلا تقنع بما دون النجوم Wishing you all the best
My previous experience on similar projects are 1) deep excavation 2) engineering services synchronisation, roll out of facilities and department wise commissioning in Greenfield project, 4) maintaining current facilities shutdown 5) design philosophy amendment possibilities and harmony among all vendors. 4moutilized and implement the idea of accountability and ownership as a key focus and an essential tool for boosting innovation and creativity within any team members. Typical of all leaders, adaptive leadership focuses on making major decisions, but what distinguishes their leadership style is that they are open to feedback, and creative ideas, and ready for inevitable change, skilled with adaptive challenges, and nimble enough to shift direction when the time comes, and this is definitely a skill you possess as a leader. Wish you the best of luck, and a complete success all the way.
