Kantar's Mzansi Consumer Barometer 2024 highlights South Africans' resilience amid challenges like loadshedding and rising costs. Optimism, especially among the youth, drives a hustler mindset, with many seeking extra income. Consumers are becoming value-conscious, using loyalty programs and smart shopping to manage economic pressures. Marketing All Products Survey (MAPS) Research by ESOMAR / Plus 94 Research / Marketing Research South Africa. Time: 3 year data from January 2021 - December 2023 Space: 50% Metro, 30% Urban, 20% rural People: 18.48 Million People. Economic Landscape - Brand Loyalty declining for groceries and toiletries. Flat for cosmetics. Average spend on groceries has increased substantially year on year across majority of products while average basket size is getting smaller. South Africans paying more for goods and getting less and less. 🥃 🍻 Unsurprisingly, with the exception of spirits, Alcohol Consumed in Pats 7 Days for the rest of the Total Beverage Alcohol industry has increased in the last year. Beer, Wine and Sorghum Beer all seeing gains. Spirit coolers are flat and FABS return to 2021 base. 👔 👕 👗 👞 Clothing Past 4 Week (PW4) - Shein is the retailer of choice ahead of other value brands such as Mr Price Apparel Mr Price Group , Ackermans , Foschini, TFG (The Foschini Group) and others for Women, Children and Men's clothing. Clothing at 42% is the major category for online shopping, followed by fast food at 17%, technology & appliances, groceries and footware at 12% each. 📺 📻 📲 Media Landscape - TV 9.6 Million people spend more than 20 hours per week watching TV (P7D). Top 4 TV Channels by Viewership - SABC 1 with 10.5M watched P7D, ETV with 8.6M, SABC 2 at 6.6M and S3 (SABC 3) with 5.2M. TV penetration stands at 54%. 79% of Households own TV sets. SVOD 8 Million South Africans have access to on-demand video streaming services. Top 3 Streaming Services: YouTube with 10.9M. Netflix 6,3M and Showmax with 3,6M people with access. This audience demographically skews heavily towards LSM 7-10. Social Media 13M South Africans spend more than 20 hours per week on social media. Top 3 social media platforms: WhatsApp WhatsApp WhatsApp Business with 28M, Facebook with 25M (both owned by Meta). TikTok TikTok for Business TikTok Shop rounds up the top three (3) with 11M. With a global potential reach of 1.218 Billion users aged 18 and above, out of a total of 4.85 Billion social media users, which works out to about 24.65% using TikTok. 6M South Africans used TikTok as a search engine. Radio 3.4 Million South Africans are spending more than 20 hours per week listening to the radio. 1.6M spend more than 20 hours per week listening to a podcast. 21M listened to Commercial Radio Stations. 4M listened to Community Stations 48 000 listened to Internet Radio stations. Social Media is the biggest secondary behaviour associated with listening to the radio, followed by watching TV and lastly with surfing the Internet. Cinema 619k people regularly go to the Cinema once every 2 to 3 months. 1M visited Sterk-Kinekor most often 818k visited NuMetro most often. South Africa’s political landscape is the focus as we move towards our national election on 29 May. The part of election fever that fascinates & entertains me, is the plethora of party posters adjourning every available street pole. Poster design is a passion of mine – landing a message within seconds is a dark art. I thought it would be fun to give pros and cons opinions on the different posters I’ve seen to date. I’ll feature a different poster each day. The principle I’ve adopted is that I know nothing about the party until I see their poster. Political party: Action SA Pros: ‘Fix it’ is a great nickname, instils confidence & purpose. Simple & clear messaging. Prominent presence of party name & logo. Cons Use of SA flag unnessary. All parties are South African. Slightly awkward expression - is it a smile or was he caught mid sentence? Drop your thoughts in the comments 😂

I've been seeing a lot of content creators complaining that, big brands have "stolen" their creative ideas - Just a few days ago, i came across a South African creator complaining about a South African brand utilising her work without crediting her. Ideas being "taken" from the originator and presented as someone else's isn't a new phenomenon - Another example is that of the gentleman who created a rollercoaster but, because he was black, that idea was taken and presented by those we were at that time "more superior". With that, it's universal knowledge that, consumers crave authenticity and connection which could be a catalyst to some great ideas being seeing and utilised without any form of the creator being acknowledged. The case study below reveals how collaborating with content creators can revolutionise corporate marketing approaches such as tapping into real-time cultural relevance, building genuine, trust-based relationships with consumers and accelerating digital transformation across all sectors by bringing content creators into leadership roles reshaping how we connect with our audience.
