Type Approval Prohibition: - The Department of Communications and Digital Technologies (DCDT) has set a deadline for prohibiting the type approval of new 2G and 3G-only devices in South Africa. This means that the Independent Communications Authority of South Africa (Icasa) will no longer approve such devices. - Existing 2G and 3G devices already approved in South Africa can still be legally imported and sold locally. 2. Activation Prohibition: - By 31 December 2024, mobile network operators in South Africa will no longer activate 2G and 3G-only devices on their networks. After this date, only devices capable of connecting to at least a 4G/LTE network will be allowed. 3. Network Shutdown: - Starting from 1 June 2025, South African mobile network operators will begin shutting down their 2G and 3G networks. However, the exact sequence for sunsetting these networks will be determined by Icasa, considering economic and regulatory impact assessments. - The final deadline for completely switching off 2G and 3G networks is 31 December 2027. This transition aims to pave the way for more advanced technologies and improve overall connectivity. 5G speed dating event explores the 5G SA roadmap The Xchanging Ideas event always has an air of speed-dating, as speakers rattle through their slides. This time round, the focus was on 5G Advanced (5G Standalone, as defined in the upcoming 3GPP Release 18), where founder Kaneshwaran Govindasamy highlighted GSMA adoption figures for 5G NSA and SA. According to that GSMA poll, while 69% of operators had deployed 5G NSA, just 19% had already begun deployed 5G SA. Within the next year, 79% plan to deploy 5G NSA, compared to 31% in 5G SA, but by the time the question reaches the 3+ year mark, the gap has closed significantly – to 100% and 94%, respectively. #5G #5Gstandalone
