In South Africa, the advancement of digital technology in healthcare is progressing slowly. Electronic medical systems have been in place for a very long time in many developed nations. Because so few private healthcare firms have implemented or are considering implementing the system, we as a nation are falling behind. There are several benefits to the EMR. One of them is the ability for specialists and other healthcare users to remotely access test results, clinical data, and vital signs in real time.

𝗥𝗲𝘀𝗲𝗮𝗿𝗰𝗵𝗲𝗿𝘀 𝗱𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗹𝗼𝗽𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝟯𝗗 𝗰𝗲𝗹𝗹 𝗰𝘂𝗹𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗲 𝗺𝗼𝗱𝗲𝗹𝘀 𝘁𝗼 𝗮𝗱𝘃𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗲 𝗱𝗿𝘂𝗴 𝗱𝗶𝘀𝗰𝗼𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘆 In an effort to advance drug discovery and disease research, researchers from the University of the Free State (UFS), the Central University of Technology (CUT), and FARMOVS, a clinical research company associated with the UFS, is developing innovative 3D cell culture models using 3D printed mini bioreactors. The project was initiated to address the challenges associated with current 3D cell culture techniques, which are often expensive and complex. Recognising the need for a more cost-effective and user-friendly solution, the researchers embarked on this collaboration to develop a novel 3D cell culture system. By making these advanced techniques more accessible, the team aims to enhance the reliability of drug testing and significantly reduce the reliance on animal experiments. Great news: The University of the Witwatersrand (Wits) Library has chosen Figshare to support its open data goals, assisting the Wits research community with archiving, publishing, sharing and promoting their datasets. Using Figshare, Wits will be able to ensure that all research data produced by their researchers, academics and postgraduate students will have a DOI, ensuring it is truly findable, trackable and citable. "The Wits Library will use this platform to contribute to the national data repository providing even more exposure to the important research being conducted at our institution," said University Librarian Dr Daisy Selematsela. Mark Hahnel, Figshare Founder and Digital Science’s VP of Open Research, said: "We’re really proud to have such a strong Figshare community in South Africa, with a large group of leading institutions, and it is exciting to see this grow even further with the addition of the prestigious University of the Witwatersrand." Yesterday, Stellenbosch University, Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences in collaboration with the Vice-Dean of Learning and Teaching Prof Karin Baatjes and the Centre for Health Professions Education hosted a talk about AI in Research Development. Our guests, Michael Rowe and Adetayo Emmanuel Obasa, PhD offered valuable insights into how best we may consider using AI in Research. Michael Rowe discussed the capabilities and potential uses of generative AI models like ChatGPT in higher education and research. He explained that these models are essentially advanced next-word predictors that can generate multi-modal content across text, images, audio etc. While they have limitations like bias and hallucinations, Rowe argued they should be treated like experts who can provide creative ideas, analysis, writing assistance and more across many domains. He provided examples of using generative AI for tasks like summarizing papers, drafting sections of research papers or grant proposals, developing surveys, critiquing arguments, and assisting with data analysis. Rowe suggested moving away from solely evaluating students on proxies like research proposals, and instead having them use AI to directly conduct novel research itself. Adetayo Emmanuel Obasa, PhD shared preliminary findings from his qualitative study interviewing researchers about their perspectives on using large language models (LLMs) for health research. Key themes included: the need for awareness of LLM strengths/limitations, concerns around bias and sustainability, and the importance of ethical guidelines/policies. Obasa noted that while some institutions initially banned LLMs out of panic, an adaptive approach leveraging their potential while being cognizant of risks is likely better. He argued education can provide leadership on responsible, innovative uses of these rapidly evolving AI technologies. A cyber_âťtáćķ paralyzed South African public hospitals and state laboratories, causing widespread disruption and chaos. The âtțá_ćķ targeted the National Health Laboratory Service (NHLS), the country's sole provider of pathology diagnostic services. As a result, the entire system was brought to a halt by a râńśôm_wâře. Doctors had to treat patients without crucial health records, performing emergency operations "blindly" due to the lack of timely blood test results. AI will not replace healthcare professionals; however, healthcare professionals who embrace AI will gain a significant advantage over those who don’t. In South Africa, the readiness for AI integration in healthcare is steadily advancing. The government has recognized AI’s transformative potential and is making strides toward modernizing healthcare systems. Initiatives such as the National Health Insurance (NHI) program and the Health Normative Standards Framework (HNSF) aim to improve data standardization and interoperability, creating a solid foundation for AI-driven solutions. With the right infrastructure, policies, and partnerships, South Africa is positioned to harness AI to address healthcare challenges, improve outcomes, and enhance access, ensuring that healthcare professionals equipped with AI tools can deliver higher quality care.

Like many countries in the East and the South, South Africa's population has grown by 1.33% since last July and now exceeds 63 million. What's driving this? Significant increases in life expectancy, as a result of medical and public health advances, have directly contributed to this population growth. What opportunities are there for me? For business leaders in South Africa, this is an opportunity to accelerate innovation. The growing population is widening the country's talent pool. By investing in young people's training and development, leaders can improve recruitment and increase diversity of thought within their organisations. For the government, this is a chance to spur economic growth. Creating favourable educational and professional opportunities for the youth will pave the way for increased productivity and growth. Zooming out. This increase in South Africa is part of a larger picture wherein Eastern and Southern populations are growing and Western ones are stagnating. In the long term, this growth could create a strain on resources, driving young people out of these regions and into those with stagnating populations - forever shifting demographics. South Africa’s Femicide Crisis South Africa continues to have some of the highest femicide rates in the world—with intimate partner violence continuing to take a “devastating” toll, according to findings from the South African Medical Research Council’s new survey on femicide and intimate partner violence. By the numbers: South Africa’s rate for intimate partner femicide is at 5.5 — almost 5X higher than in the rest of the world. 60% of women murdered in 2020-2021 were killed by an intimate partner. The Eastern Cape province has the highest rates for femicide, at almost 2X the country’s overall rate. I am sharing this this article that was published in 2021 as part of my PhD. It is so relevant now as the South African mining houses are reviewing progress (if any) and deliberating on the set milestones for occupational noise induced hearing LOSS (ONIHL). In this article we used audiometry medical surveillance data to answer some of their questions, for example, how to accurately track miners hearing deterioration from STS calculations, how to identify early signs and predict risk for ONIHL.
