Day 5 of the 2024 NExUS-RoadShow started with an excellent and thought-provoking discussion on structural geology applied to ore deposits by Jun Cowan, which was followed by insights into exploration management by the experienced Nick Franey. During the afternoon sessions we were joined by Scott W. and Blake Innes from HiveMind Press for a valuable session on cultivating cultural empathy, as well as providing everyone in the group with copies of the deadly 'Dark Heart' comics, written by Scott as part of the 'INDIGIVERSE'; the first ever comic series inspired by first nations stories (https://indigiverse.au) 🖤 💛 ❤️.
Their session emphasised the need for investing time and effort to grow meaningful relationships with all stakeholders, remembering that context is crucial for effective communication. A great phrase used by Scott during the session will really stick with me: 'Everything happens at the speed of trust', highlighting that building relationships is much more than just achieving a given (work) task, and very important advice for our student and early career cohort.
The week finished with an enjoyable networking sundowner in collaboration with the WA Australian Institute of Geoscientists (AIG) Next Gen Geo's. The cohort was joined by AIG CEO Jaime Livesey, about 25 NExUS alumni, many WA NGG's, and some of the weeks presenters even dropped past to catch up with the group for a fun and relaxed evening.
Reflecting on another very successful NExUS-RoadShow, it again struck me that with all the fantastic technical content that we cover, the most important and impactful part of NExUS activities are the human stories that are shared, the new connections that are made, and the new friendships forged through a shared passion for geoscience.
