Buoyed by the Trump trade, US market delivered strong returns during the month, notching a number of all-time highs along the way. Locally, the JSE All Share did not share in the optimism of US markets in November, declining by 0.9% over the month. Like most global peers, the ZAR lost ground to a strong US Dollar this month, ending 2.6% lower. Ominously, our friendly ties with BRICS partners could soon be cast into the spotlight after Trump threatened tariffs as high as 100% on all BRICS countries unless they commit to stand by the USD, and refrain from establishing an alternative currency to challenge the Dollar’s role as the de-facto global trade default. Flagship is about people. We are a partnership. We believe in using a collaborative approach and this philosophy guides our internship program. Every year, we invite students in their final year of study to help us navigate our clients’ investment futures by working alongside our global investment professionals to discover how to take advantage of investment opportunities, no matter where in the world they may find them. The Flagship Internship Program affords a fully immersive experience as a global equity analyst over the course of two weeks, where successful candidates are exposed to equity modelling and valuation under the guidance of Flagship’s Global Investment Team. We choose our interns after a rigorous selection and interview process which measures GPA scores, investment interest and personality profiling, with the aim of creating a mutually beneficial experience for them and us at Flagship. We maintain the connections we have forged with our interns long after they have completed our program. We are pleased and proud to introduce our first Alumni Magazine, which was conceived and created to follow the career paths and personal progression of our interns after they have graduated. #internship

The increasingly popular Buy Now Pay Later (BNPL) phenomenon is disrupting the global and South African retail, lending, and digital market industries. How exactly does BNPL work? How is the mass adoption of this new version of the classic instalment payment plan changing consumer behaviour? How do BNPL providers balance the rewards of providing quick access to finance with the risks arising from limited credit checks? Flagship global equity analyst, Gerhard J., shares his views with Simon Brown on Moneyweb. #investments #globalinvesting #investmentmanagement #wealth

We have been talking about our Flagship IP Worldwide Flexible Fund of Funds recently, why? It's not every day you find a fund with a 21-year history of outperforming SA inflation + 5%, returning 13% per annum over that period. A fund that is diversified both geographically, across global managers and investment styles. A fund where the allocation to different asset classes is carried out in robust manner by a manger with specialist macro-economic expertise. We believe this is worth talking about. #globalinvestments #investments #wealth #moneymanagement

Over the past five weeks, China equity funds have experienced massive outflows, surpassing the $60 billion mark. This reflects mounting concerns about the economic outlook, regulatory uncertainties, and geopolitical tensions with the West. On the chart below, the scale of these withdrawals is striking, dwarfing previous episodes over the last two decades. It serves as a key indicator of how global investors are reacting to China’s evolving macroeconomic and policy landscape. Will this mark a temporary adjustment or signal a broader shift of capital away from Chinese markets? #China #Equities #Investment #GlobalMarkets

Equity markets gave up some recent gains in October with the US’s S&P 500, Nasdaq and small-cap Russell 2000 all declining. One of the lone indices ending the month in the green was Japan’s Nikkei 225, gaining 3.1%, however this gain was eroded when measured in USD, as the Yen declined by nearly 6% against the greenback. In the US, all eyes were focussed on the election, which Donald Trump won by a much wider margin than most had anticipated. One issue Trump will have to tackle is the substantial US debt problem. Like global peers, the JSE All Share also struggled in October, declining by 1.3%, realising muted returns in US dollar terms, as the Rand weakened by 1.9%. There have already been quite large market moves as Trump secures the Presidency, the Republicans, the Senate, and it's looking like a clean sweep for the House as well. We have noted these initial market reactions with interest: * US 10-year Treasury yields are up, bond prices are down, * The Japanese 10-year yield is up, * SA 10-years are up marginally, * The ZAR is weaker vs the US$, * Gold, Palladium and Oil are all down, * Chinese equities and the Hang Seng also down. With this volatility comes opportunity for a boutique manager that can act nimbly and decisively.
