The South African greylisting discussion remains topical, and we were fortunate to be part of that discussion at a recent networking breakfast, hosted by Vistra South Africa. Panelists, Kabelo Moja, Shahed Hoolash, Sharlinee Nayager and Ashlin Perumall, shared valuable insights into the practical challenges that greylisting presents in the world of fund raising and fund management. A key theme that was prevalent included perceptions from potential foreign investors around deployment of capital, the perception around the capacity constraints and lack of skillset amongst law enforcement agencies to successfully prosecute instances of white collar crime and money laundering and the associated costs and resources employed by accountable institutions to identify and report on suspicious transactions. Documenting and retaining an audit trail is essential for any accountable institution. Ascension Private Equity Fund I recently held its AGM and investor day in Johannesburg. We took our investors for site visits to see, feel and smell two of our portfolio companies, Paul's Muesli (manufacturer of muesli, granola and cereal bars) and CPB (credit bureau and data analytics / solutions business). It was a good opportunity to take stock of our successes and how far we've come. We are proud to announce Tinyiko Ngwenya has been promoted to Principal. Our deal-by-deal funds have also had two successful exits.
