It is about how difficult it is to move people from windows to Linux

Misconceptions ● Avoid installing Linux along with windows, it may harm their system. ● Hardly believe in anything that comes for free. ● People still think Linux is command based so is a coders platform
● We only think of other options when we are left with no choice. ● Students are using Ubuntu, not because it is a powerful Operating System, but because they wont get windows to work with in their computer labs. ● Only very less number of students are aware of Linux importance and power. ● Once students are familiar and start working on Linux they will start loving it too.

Students First Response ● Students are familiar with windows OS only. ● ..what is Ubuntu? was their response when Ubuntu was given as an operating system ● Windows GUI is better and user friendly.

Problems ● Windows based courses are in curriculum like Turbo C, C++, C#,Visual studio-.net framework. ● Not very much familiar with gcc & g++ compilers. ● Linux was taught on windows using applications like putty.
What we can do? ● To make Linux popular among common man, libre office has a very big role to play. ● Hard to convince people to use libre office who are working on MS office since years. ● Linux should come as default OS for Laptop. ● This might help build their faith in Linux.
● Schools and Universities can really play big role in making Linux popular. ● As Linux comes free it should be easy to convince schools to use Linux in their computer labs. ● Many schools are now using Libre Office in teaching.
● To make Linux popular among common man, libre office has a very big role to play. ● Although Libre office is very good alternative to MS office, it is hard to convince people to use libre office who are working on MS office since years.

Editor's Notes

  1. As technical support staff is trained in windows they are good at windows trouble shooting. They can download and install Linux. But when it comes to trouble shoot Linux they are in no-wheres land. Though for better future prospects they want to learn new things for sure. When Linux was being installed in our labs their response was positive.
