LESSON’S OBJECTIVES
● 1. Recall and describes a proportion.
● 2. Identifying the Basic Proportionality Theorem
(BPT) and its Converse Theorem
● 3. Applies the fundamental theorems of
proportionality to solve problems involving proportions.
Let’s recall

Basic Proportionality Theorem
● Now for today’s lesson we are tackling about
the Basic Proportionality Theorem, the lesson to
build up the topic of “Similar Triangles”.
To refresh the discussion. Can you define the term

Examples
Example no. 1
Solving problems involving Basic Proportionality
Theorem. Look for missing x
A Sol’N: Using the BPT, we
can solve for x, recall that
20 25 , let’s form a proportion by
P Q substituting the values.,
solve for x.
x 30
B C
Example no. 1
Solving problems involving Basic Proportionality
Theorem. Look for missing x
A Sol’N:
20(15) = 25x
20 25 300 = 25x
P Q x = 12
Therefore, the length of
30
x BP = 12.
B C
Example no. 2
Solve for y and the lengths of opposite sides.
M Sol’n: Setup the proportion
, let’s form a proportion by
substituting the values., solve for y
16 y(2y) = 36(16)
= 576
A = 288
y = 16.970
Therefore, the length of BP =
2y 16.970 and OA = 33.94
O 36 B y P
Converse of Basic Proportionality
Theorem
Theorem 2 – Converse of Basic
Proportionality Theorem
”If line segment XY intersects sides AB
and AC of Triangle ABC at two distinct
points X and Y respectively, such that ,
then line segment XY is parallel to the
third side.”

Real-life situation???
Question: Why do you think is the application of Basic Proportionality Theorem is
Important?
• In trades where constructing and forming road is needed, the triangle proportionality
theorem is often used to determine how long a route should be. For example, say an
engineer wants to build a mountain road.
• The triangle proportionality theorem is useful for construction. For example, say a
contractor is building support beams for the roof of a house. One support beam has already
been applied to the upper part of the room, but an additional one must be constructed.
