General Objectives

At the end of this webinar you must be able to:


1. Apply tips & strategies for the listening exam by providing
correct responses to a Specimen Paper;
2. Complete a sample/Specimen Spanish Paper 1 exam with at
least 80% accuracy using the information acquired in this
session as a guide.
What do you know
about Paper 1?
What does the paper assess?

It assesses candidates’ ability to:


• Listen to and understand a number of items in the target
language (Spanish);
• Read and understand a number of written items. Both
sections require candidates to demonstrate mastery of
essential elements of grammar and vocabulary as prescribed
in the CSEC syllabus.
How is the paper structured?

This paper comprises two main parts and is further


subdivided into 5 sections. It is marked out of a total of 60
marks: Part A-Section 1-4: Listening Comprehension (30
marks) and Part B- Section 5: Reading comprehension (30
marks).

Duration: 1 hr. and 15 mins:


Part A: 45 mins. Part B: 30 mins
Let us look at what you will do in
each section of the paper...
Section 1
You will listen to a single sentence and choose
from four pictures, the one that shows what the
sentence says.
Section II

You will listen to a sentence


that will be read twice and
followed by one question or
incomplete statement; then
choose the answer which
best completes the question
or statement.
Section III

You will hear a series of


public announcements or
selections followed by a
number of questions. Each
announcement/ selection
will be read twice. You will
select the best response for
each question.
Section IV

You will listen to a


passage that will be
read 3 times; and you
will answer the
questions in parts.
General TIPS and
STRATEGIES for Paper 1
Try to identify the Alternatives (All the possible / plausible choices or
responses to the stem/ question) and the Distractors (Incorrect/ not
plausible alternatives) in each item.

Tips for the Listening Comprehension
1. Before the sentence is read, study
the pictures carefully (in the case of
Section I); take note of the
differences; predict the question that
you will hear.

2. Associate what you hear with what


you see, then choose the best option
that fits perfectly with what you see.
3. Listen for the action (verb) and
the doer (subject) (gender and
number).

4. Listen also for the other ‘reporter


questions’/ interrogatives- What?
Where? How? etc.

EXAMPLE: A number of questions


could be generated from the
following sentence:
En la mañana, la mujer prepara los plátanos en
casa.

Who (¿Quién?) - is doing the action? (él/ ella


etc.)

What(¿Qué?)- what is being done? (prepara...)


What is the action being done to? (los plátanos)

Where (¿Dónde ?) – is it being done? ( en casa)

When (¿Cuándo?)- is it being done? (en la


mañana/ en la tarde?)

6. Study the responses carefully
so that you can predict the
questions and start to determine the
correct answer prior to the question
being asked.

7. Do not jump the gun! Listen


carefully to each question…
entirely before selecting your
response.
Tips/ Strategies for
Part 2:
(Items 31-60 test vocabulary and grammar.)

In addition to the previously mentioned tips/ strategies,


please bear in mind the following

Items of Vocabulary:

1) Look out for ‘amigos falsos.’

2) Use context clues.

3) Be mindful of words /vocab that give an indication of


time/tense…

Know synonyms and antonyms.

Differentiate
Differentiate between words in English
that are said in different ways/ has
different meanings in Spanish e.g.
time- la vez/ la hora/ el tiempo; to
take- tomar/ llevar..

Items of Grammar

1) Apply grammar rules:


prepositions that follow a 2) Know the genders of
verb, use of tenses and nouns: This will help you

phrases, read the entire sentence/s or paragraph

after you have filled in the blank spaces.
4) For sections with questions based on an extract (E.g. an announcement/
advertisement/ short story, etc.), you may read the questions and responses first
as this will help you to pre-empt and determine the responses as you read.

5) Again, use the process of elimination when the answer doesn’t jump out at
you.
