INTRODUCTION TO STEAM SEAL

SYSTEM OF 800MW KUDGI TURBINE

OVERVIEW
 Start up source is from HT PRDS
 SSRA-aux steam feed valve
 SSRA – PRDS to seal steam header CV maintains header PR .28 KSC
 Drain of feed line by steam trap to flash tank
 SPUV- steam packing unloading valve
 After loading of turbine & if pressure exceeds set value SPUV will reduce the pressure
by unloading to condenser or LPH1
 Drain of SSH continuously by leg drain with orifice to flash tank(8 nos)
 Seal steam temperature & pressure measured after steam pipe drain
 One number of relief valve provided- 1.75 ksc
 SPUV unload the steam to condenser when 8th extraction temp is high-149 deg C or
heater level high
GLAND STEAM SYSTEM
 Before starting sealing, turbine must be in turning gear
 If not in turning gear seal steam temp should be below 250 deg C
 Turbine has sensitized packing ring
 Before give seal steam exhaust hood spray & curtain spray should be in service.
 After seal steam is established vacuum pulling should stared to avoid excessive
exhaust hood temperature.
 Ip turbine is prewarmed by seal steam
GLAND STEAM SYSTEM V/VS AUTO OPERATION

 Feed station MOV and bypass MOV no auto operation. Only operate in sequence and
manual mode.
 Sequence operation time – 360 sec.
 Initially inlet CV will open for 6 sec. then close for 50 sec.
 Afterwards 2 sec open and close for 50 sec.
 Permissive for sequence operation – Upstream valve in open condition and pr. 0.1 ksc.
 Inlet CV set value – 0.28 ksc.
 Manually we can set – 0 to 2 ksc MW Sec MW Gain
 CV open permissive – MOV open 0 30 0 1.5
 CV manual operation – Yes 800 40 800 1
 House load condition – 40% open
GLAND STEAM SYSTEM V/VS AUTO OPERATION

 Inlet bypass valve manual operation – Yes

 Unloading bypass MOV – No auto operation
 Unloading CV operation – SV is 0.31 ksc

0 12 0 0.2
800 90 800 1.5
GLAND STEAM SYSTEM

Major equipment’s in the Main Turbine Gland Seal System are as follows:
• Auxiliary Steam Seal Feed valve(SPFV) 10MAW20AA120
• Gland steam feed valve (SSFV) (10MAW20AA120)
• Steam seal header line (SSH)
• Steam packing unloading valve(SPUV) 10MAW21AA120
• Steam Diverting Valve to Heater (SVDH) 10MAW21AA150
• Steam Diverting Valve to Condenser (SVDC) 10MAW21AA160,
• Gland Steam Condenser (10MAW10AC010)
• Steam packing exhaust line(SPE)
• Gland steam condenser (GSC) (10MAW10AC010)
• Gland steam exhauster (GSE) (10MAW11/12AN010)
GLAND STEAM SYSTEM
 Before steam turbine start up , gland steam is supplied from aux steam line, and after
steam turbine start up and self sealing condition , gland steam is supplied from HP
heater#7 extraction line through the HP turbine exhaust drain valve (10LCM30AA151)
 Setpoint value for SSFV – 0.28 ksc and for SPUV – 0.31 ksc
 SSFV :
 When HLO/BIO/Turbine load rejection occurs through the high limiter SP will be
set to 50% for 5 sec and SSFV forcibly opened.
 SPUV:
 When HLO/BIO/Turbine load rejection occurs through the low limiter SP will be
set to 0% for 5 sec and SPUV forcibly closed.
GLAND STEAM SYSTEM
 Pressure packings also have one intermediate leak off line which discharge steam to
steam packing leak off (SPL) to Deaerator extraction. (Auto open after Gen. load >15%)
 If the excessive gland steam flows backward into the turbine through LP#1 extraction
line and if it is high temperature (149 deg. c), the turbine rotor is locally overheated ,
excessive thermal stress is caused and the rotor is subjected to permanent deformation.
 To prevent this condition, 2 piston butterfly valves (SVDH) and (SVDC) are installed to
to allow change over between them.
 Gland steam exhauster maintain vacuum of 130mmAqin SPE.
 At higher load when pressure build up , the gland steam leaks to the SSH from the
turbine shaft gland of high pressure and intermediate pressure sectionsand from main
valve glands but at low pressure section the seal steam is fed from SSH.
 In case of the outage of both gland condenser exhauster fans, the turbine must be tripped
immediately.
