NATIONAL AIDS CONTROL

PROGRAMME
INTRODUCTION
 LOOKING AT THE GRAVITY OF HIV
INFECTION IN THE COUNTRY .
 INDIAN GOVERNMENT LAUNCHED NACP
IN THE YEAR 1987.
 THE MINISTRY OF HEALTH AND FAMILY
WELFARE HAS SET UP NACO AS A
SEPARATE WING TO IMPLEMENT AND
CLOSELY MONITOR THE VARIOUS
COMPONENTS OF THE PROGRAMME.
AIMS OF THE PROGRAMME
 TO PREVENT FURTHER TRANSMISSION OF
HIV.

 TO DECREASE MORBIDITY AND


MORTALITY ASSOCIATED WITH HIV
INFECTION .

 TO MINIMIZE THE SOCIO-ECONOMIC


IMPACT RESULTING FROM HIV INFECTION

DECENTRALIZATION AND NGO
INVOLVEMENT.

- NATIONAL POLICY ON PAEDIATRIC ART

NACO
 NATIONAL AIDS CONTROL ORGANIZATION IS
THE “ ORGANIZATION FOR FORMULATION OF
POLICY AND IMPLEMENTATION OF
PROGRAMME FOR PREVENTION AND
CONTROL OF HIV/AIDS IN INDIA. ”
 IT WAS ESTABLISHED ON 1992 .
 IT PROVIDES LEADERSHIP TO HIV/AIDS
CONTROL PROGRAMME IN INDIA THROUGH
35 HIV/AIDS PREVENTION AND CONTROL
SOCIETIES.
NATIONAL AIDS PREVENTION & CONTROL POLICY

 UNION GOVERNMENT APPROVED THE


NATIONAL AIDS PREVENTION AND
CONTROL POLICY IN APRIL 2002.
 OBJECTIVES :-

TRANSMISSION RATE OF AIDS .
NATIONAL COUNCIL ON AIDS (NCA)
 IT PROVIDE POLICY GUIDELINE AND POLITICAL
LEADERSHIP TO NACP .

 TO MAINSTREAM HIV/AIDS ISSUES IN ALL

MINISTRIES AND DEPARTMENT BY TREATING IT


AS A DEVELOPMENTAL CHALLENGE AND NOT

MULTISECTORAL RESPONSE TO COMBAT


HIV/AIDS IN THE COUNTRY WITH SPECIAL

 PROVISION OF ADEQUATE, SAFE AND
QUALITY BLOOD TO EVERY PATIENT .
 TESTING OF EVERY UNIT OF BLOOD
AGAINST TTIs(TRANSFUSION
TRANSMISSIBLE INFECTION :- HIV ,
HEPATITIS B, HEPATITIS C, SYPHILIS AND
MALARIA)
 BLOOD STORAGE UNITS AT FRUs.
STD/STIS CONTROL :-

 STD INCREASES THE CHANCES OF HIV


INFECTION .
 THIS HIGHLIGHT THE NEED FOR
CONCOMITANT CONTROL OF STDs AS A
PROGRAMME STRATEGY .
