Lab 3 :SSB
Single sideband (SSB) modulation
 Reduces the transmission bandwidth of SSB by 50%.

 Generate a double-sideband signal. Then apply a band-pass filter to

the result.

 Demodulation done in the receiver using an envelope detector or a

square-law detector.

 Application in transmission of analogue voice signal.

• AUDIO INPUT SELECT switch to INT position

• MODE switch to SSB
• SPEAKER switch to OFF
• OUTPUT AMPLIFIER GAIN PRESET set to fully clockwise
position.
• In the AUDIO OSCILLATOR, the AMPLITUDE & FREQUENCY
PRESET should be set at fully clockwise position.
• In the BALANCE MODULATOR the BALANCE PRESET
• Refer curriculum manual page no:93 should be at fully clockwise position.

Instructions for the Experiment
• Monitor the input to the BALANCED MODULATOR at tp15 using Pico scope.
• Record this waveform in your workbook.
• Using Channel 2 of your Pico scope, monitor the output from the BALANCED MODULATOR at tp17.
• On the AUDIO OSCILLATOR, turn the AMPLITUDE PRESET control fully counter-clockwise to reduce
the information amplitude to zero.
• Now, without adjusting the Pico scope settings, record the carrier input waveform in your workbook.
This signal is now the carrier, which is at a frequency slightly less than 455kHz.
• Turn the BALANCE PRESET on the BALANCED MODULATOR slowly counter-clockwise to reduce or
'balance out' the carrier. Near to the midpoint of its travel, the amplitude of the carrier will be
reduced to zero and the carrier will be completely suppressed.
• Increasing the AUDIO OSCILLATOR AMPLITUDE preset control to its maximum (fully clockwise)
position will re-introduce the information signal and the output will now be a DSBSC signal.
• Record this signal in your workbook.
• Write your comments on the outputs in the Notes space given in your workbook.
