ORDERS OF

ADJECTIVES
When we use more than one adjective
before a noun in English, we often
put the adjectives in a specific order.
It can sound quite strange if the
adjectives are in a different order.
However, there are two things to
remember. First, it's very rare to use
more than three adjectives before a
noun. Second, sometimes the order
can be changed, usually to
emphasise something.
Here is the order of the adjectives:
• Number
• Opinion
• Size
• Age
• Shape
• Colour
• Origin
• Material
• Purpose

Determiners (words like
'a' or 'some' or' several')
go at the beginning. We
also put adverbs like
'really' and 'very' at the
beginning, after the
determiners.
Here are some examples:
• I carried a very small black suitcase.
• They have some old French paintings.
• She was wearing a new red silk dress.
• That is a really ugly wooden chair.
• We bought a new round kitchen table.
• There are some new Chinese students in
the class.
When there are two or more
adjectives that are from the same
group, the word and is placed
between the two adjectives:
• The house is green and red.
• The library has old and new
books.
When there are three or more adjectives from
the same adjective group, place a comma
between each of the coordinate adjectives:
• We live in the big green,
white and red house at the end of the street.
• My friend lost a red, black and white watch.
A comma is not placed between an adjective
and the noun.
More examples:
• I love that beautiful old big green antique car that always parked at
the end of the street. [quality – age – size – color – proper adjective]
• My sister has a big beautiful tan and white bulldog. [size – quality –
