Introduction
Background of the Study
There was researched about “ Effect of
chewing gum on heart rate, respiratory rate
and short term recall” by Peterson, et. Al. in
2018, who discovered,
Chewing gum during the examination helps
to improve attention.
Introduction
Background of the Study
There was another study “Chewing
gum help you to concentrate for longer,
study suggests” by Morgan, et. al. in
2013, who learned,
The chewing gum can help to
concentrate for longer on the visual
and an audio in the step by step on the
task.
Introduction
Background of the Study
Pulos, E. N, in 2015 study about “Gum and
memory?” Who learned from the studies of
Japanese researchers who found out in 2000,
Hippocampus located in medial temporal
lobe, which is responsible for memory, while
chewing gum, increases heartbeat and blood
is flowing faster and when blood reaches in
the brain. It works faster.
Introduction
Background of the Study
In 2014 the Study about “Health
Benefits of Gum Chewing” by
Cooper, who discovered and wrote
that,
The hippocampus is an important
area and responsible for memory.
Chewing gum improve the oxygen
level flow to the brain and it helps to
focus and make brain alert.
Introduction
Background of the Study
The recent research about “To chew or
not to chew(when studying)?” by
Emamzadeh, A, in 2019 showed that,
Chewing gum increase memory,
concentration, boost attention, and
decrease stress, increase attention,
learning, memory, mental functions and
performance.
Statement of Problem
• Does Chewing gum affect the memory recall of
Computer Science Students A.Y. 2019-2020?
What is the difference between the scores of Control
Group of Computer Science Students of pre-test and
post-test with the absence of chewing gum?
 What is the difference between the scores of
Experimental Group of Computer Science Students of
pre-test and post-test with the presence of chewing gum?
Objectives
• The researchers want to know the significant effect
of chewing gum on the memory recall of
Computer Science students of Colegio de San
Lorenzo.
To know if there is an effect of chewing gum in
memory recall.
To determine whether chewing gum improve
performance on memory recall.
Significance of Study
Theoretical Framework
According to (Mirsky et al.,
1995). Working memory refers to
the amount of holding an
information shortly in memory
while performing other mental
processes on the information,
works including opposite
operations, such as repeating a
set of digits, spelling a word, and
other working-memory tasks. Figure 1.1 Baddeley and Hitch’s theory of working memory
Conceptual Framework
• The illustration indicates how
the study partial flow. In this
study, the researchers used the
traditional pre-test and post-test
design to achieve a general and
more accurate explanation about
this study. As shown in the
illustration, it indicates the
process on how to determine
the Effects of Chewing Gum on
Memory Recall through visual
examination. FIGURE: 1.2 The figure shows the analysis of the procedure
conducted in this study.
Operational Framework
The researchers randomly picked the
computer science students in to two groups;
15 for the control group and 15 for the
experimental group, which is a total of 30
participants. The researchers used the
traditional pre-test and post-test design for
accurate description of this study. The
controlled group will perform pre-test and
post-test without the presence of chewing
gum. While then experimental group will also
perform pre-test without the presence of
chewing gum. Both of these groups had a
minute of a rest and to avoid extraneous
variable. After the experiment, the
researchers will compare the result of the Figure: 1.3 The figure shows the summary of the procedure

Discussion
• The purpose of this study is to know if the chewing gum has a significant effect on the memory
recall of the Computer Science Students of Colegio de san Lorenzo.
• Base on the result of this study showed that, according to the statistical method which is the
statistical package for the social science (SPSS), the result of his study showed that there is no
significant effect on memory recall on computer science student for using the chewing gum.
• The researcher did not have to reach the possible mean effect of this study, but since the study are
lack of population by the reason of a small respondent from the computer science student of
Colegio De San Lorenzo, but there is a minimal effect according of the mean variances on what the
researcher obtains on the SPSS. And also, minimal effect the same result from the deference scores
on controlled group and experimental group by presence and absence of chewing gum.
• Since this study is lack of population the researcher cannot achieve the goals for assuming that there
is a significant effect on memory recall of computer science student of Colegio De San Lorenzo.
Conclusion
Therefore, the findings revealed that the result showed there is no significant
effect of using chewing gum and memory recall on computer science students.
On the other hand through the result on data had been gathered it shows that
there is a minimal effect according to SPSS.
Recommendation
We highly recommend to the future researchers, it is better to use a picture on
the standardized test for the computer science students who are more in
programing, on mathematical and logical thinking and also good at
photographic memory. Therefore, to what is the picture who remembered and
not remembered. And also to determine if it has a really effect you need to get a
larger population. And enough time so that the study will execute properly.
