It is a disorder of the pilosebaceous unit seen primarily in adolescents caused by follicular epidermal hyperproliferation, excess sebum production, inflammation, and P. acnes bacteria. It is classified from mild to severe based on number of lesions. Treatment involves topical retinoids and benzoyl peroxide for mild to moderate acne and oral isotretinoin, antibiotics, or hormone therapy for severe acne. Complications can include permanent scarring. Prognosis is generally good with treatment.
