Week Topic Topic Outcomes

4 Collection and Analysis It is expected that students are able to:
of Rate Data
• Determine the reaction order and
• Batch reactor data specific reaction rate from experimental
o Integral method data.

• Compute the rate law using numerical

methods to analyze experimental data.

• Analyze rate data using half lives

method and method of initial rate.
Introduction
Chapter 4
Once the rate law is known,
• Substituted into design equation + stoichiometric

Can size any isothermal reaction system

Chapter 5
Focus on ways of obtaining and analyzing reaction rate data to
obtain the rate law for a specific reaction

Reactor: Batch
• C, P, and/or V are usually measured & recorded at
different t during the course of the reaction.
Note: C, concentration; P, pressure; V, volume; t, time;
Analysis of Rate Data

Methods for rate analysis

• Integral method

Value to be found from experiment –

• Specific reaction rate k,
• Order of reaction
• Activation energy, E and frequency factor,
A from Arrhenius equation
Batch Reactor Data
Experimental batch reactor usually operated
isothermally and at constant volume as it easy to
interpret the result.

Commonly, the determination is achieve by

measuring the concentration as a function of
time or pressure-time data for gas phase
reaction.

Experimental data also used for determination of

temperature dependency in reaction – Arrhenius
equation.
Integral Method
Zero-order

If the order we assume is correct, the appropriate plot of
the C – t data should be linear.
