Definition

It is hypertrophied nasopharyngeal
tonsils producing symptoms are
referred as adenoids
Etiology & Predisposing factors
Physiological enlargement in childhood
Occurs mostly between 3 to 7 years of age
Recurrent attack of rhinitis, sinusitis,
tonsillitis
Upper respiratory infection
Cold drink & ice creams
Allergy to upper respiratory tract infection
Clinical manifestation
Nasal obstruction
Nasal discharge
Sinusitis
Voice changes
Epistaxis
Tubal obstruction
Recurrent attack of acute otitis media
Chronic suppurative otitis media
Deafness may occur with otorrhoea
Adenoid facies
Pulmonary hypertension
Diagnostic evaluation
Physical examination
Adenoids are detected by digital palpation of
nasopharynx
Radiological examination
Treatment
When symptoms are not marked, breathing
exercises, decongestant nasal drops and anti
histamines for any co-existent nasal allergy.
Antibiotics to control the infection
When symptoms are marked, adenoidectomy
is done.
