Symmetrix 5000 Enterprise Storage systems bring unprecedented levels of performance, capacity, availability, and manageability to todays fast-paced business and government agency operations. The Symmetrix 5000 family is the industrys premier mainframe storage solution, fully supported on all IBM and IBM-compatible mainframes. Through its operating system-independent technology, Symmetrix enables you to consolidate storage from multiple hosts. And since Symmetrix does not require specialized host device drivers, you can add new versions of operating systems and platforms while minimizing operational impact. Optional Symmetrix Enterprise Storage Platform (ESP) software allows mainframe, UNIX, Windows NT, and AS/400 information to be resident and accessible on the same Symmetrix 5000 system. The result is a powerful, high performance

EMC Enterprise Storage systems. Performance for your most demanding applications.
The Symmetrix 5000 family incorporates EMCs industry-leading enterprise storage technology to provide the highest performance systems to enhance online transaction processing and other response-time intensive applications. Recent performance enhancements include increased cache capacity integration of faster backplane, disk, interconnect, and microprocessor technologies. Up to 16GB of non-volatile cache (8GB on Symmetrix 5630 systems) helps ensure that all of your applications run at top speed. Symmetrixs unique software takes full advantage of this large cache and will actually self-adjust based on user access patterns to continuously improve performance. In addition to its large, intelligent cache, Symmetrixs parallel processing capabilities achieve levels of performance that result in dramatic reductions in both online response times and batch processing windows.
Information protection extends to the enterprise. EMC Corporation has designed Symmetrix 5000 Enterprise Storage systems to ensure the highest levels of availability for your information to keep your business running.
The Symmetrix 5000 family enterprise storage design is based on EMCs powerful software and hardware architectures:

The systems availability features are unmatched in the industry and designed to provide continuous enterprise operation. Protection choices include disk Mirroring (RAID 1), Symmetrix Remote Data Facility (SRDF) remote mirroring software, hardware redundancy, and nondisruptive microcode and component replacement. The Symmetrix architecture ensures data integrity during each step of the data transfer process. Only Symmetrix veries your data from host to cache to disk and back using the same data verication codes which are generated once at the entry point.
EMCs disk Mirroring provides the high-
est data availability for mission-critical applications. By creating two copies of data on separate disk drives, Mirroring ensures both the highest availability and highest system performance.
SRDF is exclusive Symmetrix software
solution in the industry that allows businesses to create independently addressable business continuance volumes (BCVs) for mainframe and open systems enterprise information. The BCVs are copies of active production volumes that can be used to run simultaneous tasks in parallel with one another. This gives customers the ability to do concurrent operations, such as data warehouse loads and refreshes or pointin-time backups, without affecting production systems. Symmetrix Data Migration Services (SDMS), an optional EMC service, enables data migration from aging mainframe disk devices or older Symmetrix systems to new Symmetrix systems. It is a unique approach to solving the problem of providing continuous enterprise operations while replacing older technology storage. In addition, Symmetrix systems support nondisruptive microcode update loading.
Symmetrix 5000 Enterprise Storage systems are on the leading edge in providing centralized, shareable enterprise storage to help you manage rapidly changing environments supporting mission-critical OLTP applications, databases, and data warehouses. This starts with mainframe connectivity provided through both ESCON and block multiplexor channels. In addition, Symmetrix ESP software adds simultaneous support for industry-standard interface connections such as new Fibre Channel, Ultra SCSI, and fast-wide-differential (FWD) SCSI channels. Depending on the Symmetrix 5000 model and interface used, up to 32 channels are available (16 for Fibre Channel), with each channel supporting simultaneous peak transfer rates for maximum connectivity and performance. Symmetrix supports channel
that extends EMCs information protection solutions. This optional software maintains mirrored copies of data on physically separated Symmetrix systems to ensure continuous business operations
Information sharing.
Optional software allows co-residence of mainframe, open system, and other data formats; easy le transfers and backups; fast mainframe-to-open database loads; and frequent database refreshes.

connections to all supported hosts concurrently, a capability unmatched by others in the industry and providing maximum information throughput. Fibre Channel, with its fast 100MB per second bandwidth, supports the development of cost-effective, highly available, scalable storage systems for bandwidth-intensive applications. Fibre Channel goes well beyond being just an interconnect system. It offers a signicant impact on distance and connectivity limitations. It increases the distance limit between host and I/O subsystems to one kilometer, and increases connectivity and performance capabilities. Fibre Channel technology is also helping to dene the next great advance in information consolidation, distribution, and performance capabilities EMC Enterprise Storage NetworkTM (ESN). ESN, implemented through Fibre Channel, switch, and hub technologies, provides a specialized storage area network that permits campus-wide server access to Symmetrix storage. ESN technology creates a virtual data center where servers can be located at the application sites and deployed or upgraded as needs evolve while your information remains centralized, easily accessed, managed, protected, and shared. Heterogeneous mainframe and server support is extended through exible disk device congurations. Symmetrix 5000 capacity can be shared between multiple mainframes and servers by logically partitioning a single disk drive, or a set of disk drives, between each host. Symmetrix 5000 systems offer the capability of intermixing disk capacity technologies to exactly tailor storage capability to specic application requirements.
nesses can perform updates to their data warehouses and decision-support systems as needed to ensure that decision-making is based on the most timely and accurate information available.

Additional capabilities, added value.
The Symmetrix 5000 Enterprise Storage systems offer a number of standard and optional capabilities to further increase their value. Hyper-Volume Extension (HVE) permits split volume capability for support of multiple logical volumes on single physical disk drives. No modications to operating system, application, or program software are needed in order to take advantage of Symmetrixs HVE capability. The FDR family of backup/restore solutions, offered by EMC as the result of a teaming agreement with Innovation Data Processing Corporation, provides high speed, physical image backup/restore of open systems volumes to mainframe S/390 tape or disk storage. The FDR family leverages the capabilities of Symmetrix ESP by enabling mainframe access to both S/390 and open systems disks at high performance ESCON channel speeds.
