Material Resource Planning, MRP -I The inputs of the MRP system are 1. A master production schedule (MPS) 2. An inventory status file 3. Bill of material (BOM)
Using this three information source, the MRP processing logic provides three kind of information for each product components a. Order release requirements b. Order rescheduling and c. Planned order.

1. Master Production Schedule : a. It is a series of time phased quantities for each item that a company produces how many are to be produced and when. b. The MRP system accepts whatever the master schedule demand and translates MPS end item into specific component requirement.
2. An inventory status file a. Every inventory file being planned must have an inventory status file which gives complete and update information on the hand quantities, gross requirements, schedules receipts and planned o rder release for an item. b. If projected available inventory is not adequate to meet the requirement in a period, the MRP programme will recommend that this item be ordered.
3. Bill of material (BOM) a. BOM identifies how each product is manufactured specifying all subcomponents items, their sequence of build up, their quality in each finished unit and the work centers performing the buildup sequence. b. This information is obtained from product design document work flow analysis and other standard manufacturing inf ormation.

MANUFACTURING RESOURCES PLANNING , MRP-II 1. MRP-I is the detailed planning process for components to support the MPS. 2. It was now possible to enhance the system to include the financial plans based on the detailed MPS planning process. 3. Because execution was improved, the resultant plans become more and more believable. 4. Simulation possibilities were added along with various ways to examine what if scenario is. 5. This overall vision of MRP system for planning and controlling company operation was so fundamental different from the original concept of MRP. Thus a new term suggested by Oliver Weight is MRP -II.
Figures below shows MRP -II.An integrated system for planning and control

6. MRP-II means MANUFACTURING RESOURCES PLANNING. MRP-II coordinate sales ,purchasing, manufacturing ,finance and engineering by adopting a focal production plan and by using one unified database to plan and update the activities in all th e system. 7. MRP-II can be divided into three parts a. Production planning which takes place at the top management level. b. Operation planning handling by staff unit c. Operation control function conducted by manufacturing line and staff supervisors.
