Engineering and
Society
Chapter 1 : Introduction To
Engineering In Society
Lecturer : Mohd Yusri Ibrahim
What is the role of engineering
in the development of society?
- Engineering practices include
identifying problems that need
solving, designing solutions to
problems.

- Engineers use their knowledge, skills, and

creativity to design, build, and maintain
systems, structures, and technologies that
improve our quality of life.
Engineering development in Malaysia

 Malaysia has successfully transitioned from an economy

dependent on agriculture and natural resources to one
with robust manufacturing and services sectors
 Malaysia’s social economy has had recent renewed
government support building to promote innovation and
social entrepreneurship
 The Malaysian government has given high priority to
export-oriented firms that are more knowledge-intensive
than production-intensive, so as to transform the
country’s manufacturing in the direction of high-tech and
knowledge based industries
 The industrial sector has played a vital role in the
economic transformation in Malaysia.

History of engineering

Scientific revolution

 1st Industrial revolution

 2nd industrial revolution
 3rd industrial revolution
History of engineering: 1st Industrial revolution
From the 18th through early 19th century, civil and mechanical engineers changed from practical artists
to scientific professionals.
History of engineering: 1st Industrial revolution

- The first phase of modern engineering emerged in the Scientific Revolution. Galileo’s Two New
Sciences, which seeks systematic explanations and adopts a scientific approach to practical problems, is a
landmark regarded by many engineer historians as the beginning of structural analysis, the mathematical
representation and design of building structures.
- This phase of engineering lasted through the First Industrial Revolution, when machines, increasingly
powered by steam engines, started to replace muscles in most production.
History of engineering: 2nd Industrial revolution
In the century before World War II, chemical, electrical, and other science-based engineering branches
developed electricity, telecommunications, cars, airplanes, and mass production.
History of engineering: 2nd Industrial revolution
- The second industrial revolution, symbolized by the advent of electricity and mass production, was
driven by many branches of engineering.
- Chemical and electrical engineering developed in close collaboration with chemistry and physics and
played vital roles in the rise of chemical, electrical, and telecommunication industries. Marine
engineers tamed the peril of ocean exploration. Aeronautic engineers turned the ancient dream of
flight into a travel convenience for ordinary people. Control engineers accelerated the pace of
automation.
- Industrial engineers designed and managed mass production and distribution systems.
History of engineering: 3rd Industrial revolution
As engineering science matured after the war, microelectronics, computers, and
telecommunications jointly produced information technology.
History of engineering: 3rd Industrial revolution
- The explosion of engineering research, which used to lagged behind natural science,
was especially impressive, as can be seen from the relative expansion of graduate
education.
- Engineering was also stimulated by new technologies, notably aerospace,
microelectronics, computers, novel means of telecommunications from the Internet
to cell phones.
- Utilization of atomic and nuclear power brought nuclear engineering. Advanced
materials with performance from the laboratories of materials science and
engineering.
- Above all, microelectronics, telecommunications, and computer engineering joined
force to precipitate the information revolution in which intellectual chores are
increasingly alleviated by machines.
The Role of Engineering in Society
- supporting the growth and development of a
country's economy as well as improving the
quality of life for its citizens.
- helping a nation achieve developed nation
status.
- social responsibilities of engineers include
human safety and environmental protection
in engineering designs.
- leading edge of innovation and plays a
significant role in shaping society and its
future.
Engineer’s responsibility for organization
Engineer’s responsibilities in organization
▪ The primary function of engineers within an organization is to use their
technical knowledge and training to create structures, products, and
processes that are value to the organization and its customers.
▪ Engineers develop new technological solutions. During the
engineering design process, the responsibilities of the engineer may
include defining problems, conducting and narrowing research,
analyzing criteria, finding and analyzing solutions, and making
decisions.
▪ Hold paramount the safety, health, and welfare of the public.

▪ Perform services only in areas of their competence.

▪ Issue public statements only in an objective and truthful manner.

▪ Act for each employer or client as faithful agents or trustees.

▪ Avoid deceptive acts.

▪ Conduct themselves honorably, responsibly, ethically, and lawfully so

as to enhance the honor, reputation, and usefulness of the profession.
Engineer’s challenges in an organization
1. Engineering is a challenging field that requires dedication, problem-solving skills, and the ability to
adapt to changing circumstances
2. Engineers face time management issues, stress, and the pressure to be perfect.
3. Skill and Staff Shortage - engineering industry is struggling against a widespread skill and staff
shortage.
4. Technological Advancements - Technology is developing rapidly and Engineers need to meet
challenges resulting from the new technological advancements.
5. Climate change is one of the biggest challenge modern engineers will face. Engineers should discover
how to reduce the environmental impact caused by the climate change.
6. In future, many countries will experiencing the global population. It is the responsibility of engineers
to aid the developing world, creating the infrastructure necessary to provide food, water,
transportation, health care and power.
