FUEL OIL QUANTITY CALCULATIONS
Some of the abbreviations which have been used in the following pages are :
a) DensityCorrection Coefficient - DCC
b) Volume Correction Coefficient - VCC
c) DensityCorection Factor -DCF
d) Volume Corection Factor -VCF
e) Sounding- Sdg.
)Observed - Obs.
g) Draught - Dft.
SIGNIFICANCE OF MASS CACULATIONS:
A)The price of the bunker fuels are based on the mass and not the volume. The owner/charterer has to
make the payment on the basis of the quantity received on the basis of mass calculations
B)Also for the purpose of power calculations the mass of the fuel oil consumed by an ICE is to be
known as the calorific value is based on unit mass of Fuel (and not on volume).
C) Also it is worth noting that the mass of the Fuel is not going to change with temperature while the
volume is going to change with the change in temperature
For calculation of correct mass the volume and the density has to be known and both have to be at the
same temperature. So,following 2 ways can be used for arriving at the correct mass :
.Mass =Volume @T'C X Density @T°C, where Tis the tank temperature
Or
Going by method b) you have to make a correction to the volume @ T'Cto know the volume @ 15°C
by multiplying it with a Volume Correction Factor (VCF)
Volume @15'C= Volume @T'C XVCF
where
VCF= 1-(ATX VCC)
AT=T-15c
VCF =Volume Correction Factor
VCC= Volune Correction Coefficient ( from the tables)

OR
Youcan interpolate for the 3" column and get the result
Sounding List 2'p 3'p 2.4'P
110.0 cm -8.0 cm -12.1 cm -9.64 cm
120.0 cm -8.0 cm -12.1 cm -9.64 cm
117.5 cm -9.64 cm
Whichever way you calculate, the calculations have to be shown in some similar way as follows :
For 110.0 cm sdg, 2.4 deg. Plist,
the applicable correction =-8.0+(-12.1-(-8.0) x(2.4-2.0/(3.0-2.0) =-9.64 cm
For 120.0 cm sdg, 2.4 deg. Plist,
the applicable corection =-8.0+{-12.1-(-8.0)) x (2.4-2.0)/(3.0-2.0) =-9.64 cm
For 117.5 cm sdg, 2.4 deg. P list,
The applicable corTection = -9.64 cm
SOUNDING IN UPRIGHT CONDITION= 117.3 -9.64 = 107.66 cm
OR
Whichever way you calculate , the calculations have to be shown in some similar way as follows :
At 107.0 cm sounding and trim of 1.7 m,the volume will be
=428.1-(428.1-395.3) x(1.7-1)(2.0-1.0) =428.1 - (32.8 x0.7) =428.1 22.96 =405.14 m3
At108.0 cm sounding and trim of 1.7 m,the volume will be
= 432.3-(432.3-399.5) x (1.7-1.0)/ (2.0-1.0) =423.3 - (32.8 x 0.7) =423.3 - 22.96 =409.34 m3
Further interpolating , for 107.7 cm sounding and trim of 1.7 m, the volume will be
=405.14 +(409.34 -405.14) x(107.7-107.0)/(108.0-107.0) =405.14 +4.2 x0.7 =40S. 14 +2.94 =
408.08 m3
So,by interpolation the sounding of tank at even kel for volume of 408.08 m3 will be
-96- (96-95) x(409.7 -408.08/(409.7-405.5)) =96 (1.62/4.2) =96 -0.3857 =95.614 cm
OR
So , by interpolation the sounding of tank at even keel for volume of 408.08 m3 willbe
=95 +((96-95) x(408.08-405.5) / (409.7- 405.5)) =95 +(2.58/4.2) =95 +0.6143 =95.614 cm
So, the sounding of thetank when ship is brought to upright and even keel condition-95.614cm
