• The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet (ACC) has made significant appointments for the
chairmanship of several prominent banks in India. Former LIC Chairman M R Kumar has been appointed
as the part-time non-official Director and non-executive Chairman of the Bank of India (BOI). Mr
Kumar‟s appointment comes with a term of three years
• Srinivasan Sridhar has been selected as the part-time non-official Director and non-executive Chairman
of the Board of Indian Overseas Bank (IOB). Mr. Sridhar‟s appointment is also for a term of three years
• Additionally, Aravamudan Krishna Kumar has been appointed as the part-time non-official Director and
non-executive Chairman on the Board of UCO Bank. Similar to the appointments at BOI and IOB, Mr.
Kumar‟s tenure spans three years, subject to his resignation from the Board of Suraksha Asset
Reconstruction Limited.
• SBM Bank India, a subsidiary of the State Bank of Mauritius, has announced the appointment of Ashish
Vijayakar as the Managing Director & Chief Executive Officer (MD & CEO) of the Bank.

• The government has appointed A S Rajeev, former Managing Director and CEO of Bank of Maharashtra,
as the Vigilance Commissioner of the Central Vigilance Commission (CVC).
• A S Rajeev voluntarily retired from his position as Managing Director and CEO of Bank of Maharashtra.
• As per the Central Vigilance Commission Act, the Commission is comprised of three members: the
Central Vigilance Commissioner and two Vigilance Commissioners.
• Geeta Batra has been appointed as the Director of the Independent Evaluation Office (IEO) of the World
Bank‟s Global Environment Facility (GEF). Batra becomes the first woman from a developing country to
assume this prestigious role.

• Vijay Shekhar Sharma, representing One97 Communications Ltd (OCL), has stepped down from his
position as part-time non-executive chairman and board member of Paytm Payments Bank.
• Vijay Shekhar Sharma holds a 51% stake in Paytm Payments Bank, while One97 Communications, the
parent company of Paytm, owns the remaining stake.

• Indian-Origin Samir Shah is set to be appointed as the chairman of British Broadcasting Corporation
(BBC) with effect from 4th March 2024 for a period of four years until March 2028.

• Insurance Regulatory and Development Authority of India (IRDAI) has granted in-principle approval to
Gurugram (Haryana) based Policybazaar Insurance Brokers Private Limited (Policybazaar) to upgrade its
license from a direct insurance broker (Life and General) to a composite insurance broker.
• With this approval, Policybazaar is allowed to sell reinsurance products besides being a pure play
platform focused on insurance buying.
• Policybazaar is a wholly-owned subsidiary of Gurugram-based PB Fintech Limited.

• The government has increased the authorized capital of the Food Corporation of India
(FCI) from ₹10,000 crore to ₹21,000 crore, demonstrating a significant commitment to enhancing its
operational capacities.

• The Insurance Regulatory and Development Authority of India (IRDAI) has announced the reconstitution
of the Expert Committee on implementation of Indian Accounting Standards (Ind AS) and International
Financial Reporting Standards (IFRS) in the insurance sector.
• The reconstituted committee will be chaired by Rajay Kumar Sinha Member (Finance &
Investment)(F&I), IRDAI.
• Ind AS are standards/rules prescribed under Section 133 of the Companies Act, 2013. It determines how
Indian companies prepare and present their financial statements.
• IFRS issued by the IFRS Foundation, a not-for-profit and public interest organisation, to develop high-
quality, understandable, enforceable, and globally accepted accounting and sustainability disclosure
standards.
• The Investor Education and Protection Fund Authority (IEPFA), operating under the Ministry of

• App and game developers on Indus Appstore have the freedom to utilize any third-party payment

• India has taken a significant step by opening its space sector to 100% foreign direct investment
(FDI) through an amendment in the FDI policy.
• Under the amended FDI policy, various sub-sectors and activities within the space sector now have
liberalized FDI thresholds
• Satellite-related activities such as manufacturing, operation, and data products can receive FDI up to
74% under the automatic route, with government approval required beyond this threshold.
• Sub-sectors including launch vehicles, associated systems, and spaceports can attract FDI up to 49%
through automatic routes, with government approval needed beyond this limit.
• Manufacturing of components and systems/sub-systems for satellites, ground segment, and user
segment is eligible for 100% FDI under the automatic route.
• The Asian Development Bank has approved the loan of USD 23 million to India for the project „India:
Promoting Research and Innovation through Development of Fintech Institute at Gujarat International
Finance Tec-City (GIFT City) Project‟.
• The project aims to construct an inclusive, sustainable, and climate-resilient International Fintech
Institute (IFI) inside GIFT City in Gandhinagar, Gujarat.
• IFI in collaboration with internationally renowned institutes and universities, intends to provide fintech
training programs which is on par with industry and international standards.
• The Fintech startup Paymart India Pvt. Ltd., has partnered with 5 Indian banks, IDBI Bank, Indian Bank,
Axis Bank, Jammu & Kashmir Bank, and Karur Vysya Bank (KVB), to introduce India‟s 1st Virtual ATM
(VATM) to offer innovative virtual, cardless, and hardware-less cash withdrawal service.
• The service requires a smartphone, mobile banking app, and internet connection for cash withdrawal.
• The Mobile Banking App will initiate withdrawal requests from the bank and a OTP will be sent to the
registered numbers.
• The OTP can be used at the Paymart-partnered (VATM affiliated) shopkeepers to collect cash.
• The shopkeeper acts as a virtual ATM to pay cash by using the merchant login at www.vatm.in.
• Minimum withdrawal of Rs 100, maximum Rs 2,000 per transaction.
• Rs 10,000 maximum limit for virtual ATM withdrawals.
• Initially, the VATM service will be available only at select locations in Chandigarh (Punjab and Haryana),
Delhi (New Delhi), Hyderabad (Telangana), Chennai (Tamil Nadu), and Mumbai (Maharashtra).
• Paymart has collaborated with the Common Service Center (CSC) e-Governance Services India Limited
to further expand the reach of its VATM services for over 5 lakh locations nationwide.
 • HDFC Bank has secured approval from the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) for the divestment of a 90%
stake in HDFC Credila, its education loan subsidiary.
• This decision follows RBI‟s directive to HDFC to reduce its stake in Credila to below 10% within two
years post the HDFC Bank merger in April 2023.
• HDFC Bank will retain a 9.99% stake in HDFC Credila.

• The Central Economic Intelligence Bureau (CEIB) in collaboration with the State Bank of India launched
an Automated Search Portal dedicated for antecedent verification of potential borrowers and Non-
Performing Assets to help Public Sector Banks
• CEIB is the nodal agency on economic intelligence established for coordinating and strengthening the
economic intelligence and enforcement activities under the Ministry of Finance.
• The guidelines for timely detection, reporting, and investigation of large-value bank frauds (May 13,
2015, and November 6, 2019) issued by the Department of Financial Services mandated all PSBs to
obtain a report from CEIB before approving loans exceeding Rs. 50 crore for new borrowers or in the
case of existing borrowers‟ accounts turning into NPAs.

• Kathmandu hosted the commencement of the multinational military exercise „Shanti Prayas IV‟.
• This significant event, which draws army representatives from 19 countries actively involved in United
Nations Peacekeeping missions
• The Shanti Prayas Exercise is co-hosted by the Nepali Army and the U.S. Indo-Pacific Command,
reflecting the strong military cooperation between Nepal and the United States.

• The Cabinet Committee on Security approved the procurement of more than 200 BrahMos Extended
Range supersonic cruise missiles and associated equipment for the deployment on the Indian Navy
Warships. The deal is worth around Rs 19,000 crore.
• The BrahMos missiles can strike a target at a range of around 290 kilometres (km) and its extended
range variant can strike a target at a range of 450 km.
• BrahMos missile flies at a speed of 2.8 Mach or almost 3 times the speed of sound.
• India is set to deliver BrahMos missiles to the Philippines in March 2024. In 2022, India and Philippines
signed a deal worth almost USD 375 million to equip the Philippine Marines with 3 batteries of the
missiles.
• This is the first export order for the BrahMos missile developed by India and Russia.
• The Indian Air Force (IAF) has taken a significant stride in bolstering the nation‟s air defense capabilities
with the development of the Surface to Air Missile for Assured Retaliation (SAMAR-2) missile system.
This innovative system leverages repurposed Russian R-27 air-to-air missiles, transforming them into a
potent surface-to-air defense solution.

• The 5th edition of the Joint Military Exercise „Dharma Guardian‟ commenced today at the Mahajan Field
Firing Ranges in Rajasthan, India.
• The exercise brings together the Indian Army and the Japan Ground Self-Defense Force (JGSDF) for a
focused training program aimed at enhancing interoperability and fostering closer military cooperation.
 • The Indian Coast Guard (ICG), the Sri Lankan Navy (SLN), and the Maldives National Defence Force
(MNDF) are jointly conducting the 16th edition of the biennial trilateral Coast Guard exercise named
„Dosti-16‟ in the Male, Maldives.
• Observers from Bangladesh also joined in the Trilateral Joint Exercise.
• ICG Ship (ICGS) Samarth with its integral helicopter; ICGS Abhinav, and ICG Dornier aircraft
• DOSTI exercise was initiated between the coast guards of Maldives and India in 1991 and included Sri
Lanka since 2012.
• The 15th edition of the exercise was held in 2021 in Maldives.

Festivals
• The Medaram Jatara, known as Sammakka Saralamma Jatara‟, began in Medaram, Mulugu district,
showcasing Telangana‟s rich tribal heritage.
• This event, considered the world‟s largest tribal gathering, attracts pilgrims to the remote village of
Medaram once every two years.

GDP Forecast
• Morgan Stanley Research projects India‟s GDP growth for FY25 to moderate to 6.5%, down from the
6.9% projected for FY24.
• GDP growth for Q3 FY24 is expected at 6.5%, a slight slowdown from the first half of the financial year.

• Bank of Baroda (BoB) has forecasted India‟s gross domestic product (GDP) growth for fiscal years 2024-
25, approximately 6.75-6.8%, with a growth rate of 6.8% estimated for the FY24
• BoB projects India‟s GDP to grow at approximately 6.75-6.8% in FY25, with a growth rate of 6.8%
estimated for the current financial year.

• By ratifying Convention No. 190, the Philippines joins 37 other nations in the world that have taken a

• Dubai‟s Department of Economy and Tourism has announced the introduction of a five-year multiple-
entry visa aimed at enhancing travel between India and the UAE.
• In 2023, Dubai witnessed a notable surge in Indian visitors, totaling 2.46 million overnight stays,
marking a 25% increase from pre-pandemic levels.
• This growth trend has been consistent, with a 34% year-on-year increase, solidifying India‟s position as
the leading source market for international visitors to Dubai.
• The visa is processed within 2-5 working days upon application acceptance, granting holders a 90-day
stay in the UAE, extendable once for an additional 90 days, with a maximum cumulative stay of 180
days within a year.
• In a collaborative effort between the US Consulate and the Mahratta Chamber of Commerce, Industries
and Agriculture (MCCIA), the first-ever US-India Cyber Security Initiative has been launched.

• Algeria celebrated the grand opening of “Africa‟s largest mosque” and the third-largest mosque in the

• The 5th Plenary also concluded the FATF Week (19-23 February 2024), a week-long event, which

• At this Plenary, the FATF added Kenya and Namibia to the list of Grey List jurisdictions subject to

• The Government of India and the Government of Taiwan signed a Memorandum of Understanding
(MoU) on the Facilitation of Employment of Indian Workers in Taiwan. The MoU aims to strengthen the
bilateral labour cooperation relations between India and Taiwan.

• The Government of Goa has unveiled plans for a pioneering Blended Finance facility in collaboration with
the World Bank.
• Announced during the 2024 edition of the World Bank‟s India Climate and Development Partners‟ Meet.
• To facilitate access to concessional finance for low-carbon and climate-resilient investments in Goa.

• Deendayal Antyodaya Yojana-National Urban Livelihoods Mission (DAY-NULM), Ministry of Housing and
Urban Affairs (MoHUA), collaborated with United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) to organise a
2-day national workshop on urban livelihoods in Ranchi, Jharkhand.
• The workshop focused on “Enhanced Resilience – Empowered Women”.

• Department of Fisheries under the Ministry of Fisheries, Animal Husbandry & Dairying signed an
Memorandum of Understanding with Open Network for Digital Commerce to promote digital marketing
of fishes and other aquatic produce.
• The MoU aims to help traditional fishermen, fish farmers producer organisations, entrepreneurs from
fisheries sector to buy and sell their products through the e-market place.

• The Arunachal Pradesh government recently signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with
the National Tiger Conservation Authority (NTCA) to establish the state‟s first Special Tiger Protection
Force (STPF).
• Arunachal Pradesh, known for its biodiversity, is home to three tiger reserves: Namdapha,
Kamlang, and Pakke.
• The urgency for such measures was underscored by the concerning decline in tiger numbers revealed by
the 2022 tiger census. From 29 tigers in 2018, the population dwindled to a mere nine in 2022 across
the three reserves.
• Nokia and the Indian Institute of Science (IISc) have united to pioneer 6G technology research and its
real-world applications, with a particular focus on India. This collaboration, headquartered at Nokia‟s
newly inaugurated 6G Lab in Bengaluru, will delve into various facets of 6G technology, from radio
technologies to architecture, while integrating machine learning into the 6G air interface.

• The Government of Goa has announced a partnership with the World Bank to establish a Blended

Services Private Limited to finance up to 1,500 smallholder dairy farmers in Karnataka, Tamil Nadu and

• 50% capital subsidy up to Rs 50 lakhs will be provided to private companies, start-ups /SHGs /FPOs
/FCOs /JLGs and Section 8 companies for the establishment of Infrastructure like construction of
building, receiving shed, drying platform, machinery etc. including the grading plants and seed storage
godown.
• The remaining cost of the project should be arranged by the beneficiary through bank finance or self-

• The Livestock Insurance program has been simplified. The beneficiary share of the premium for farmers
has been reduced to 15% (Earlier- 20%, 30%, 40%, and 50%), and the number of animals to be

• The Ministry of Health and Family Welfare (MoHFW) introduced the Surrogacy (Regulation) Amendment
Rules, 2024 altering the Surrogacy (Regulation) Rules, 2022. These amendments, effective immediately,
address significant changes regarding the use of donor gametes and consent agreements in surrogacy
arrangements.
• Previously, surrogacy required both gametes to be from the intending couple, prohibiting the use of
donor gametes.
• The recent amendment introduces flexibility, allowing one donor gamete under specific circumstances.
• The District Medical Board must certify that either intending partner suffers from a qualifying medical
condition to permit the use of a donor gamete.
• The child born through surrogacy must still possess at least one gamete from the intending couple,
ensuring their genetic lineage.
• Unchanged provisions maintain that single women eligible for surrogacy are limited to widows or
divorcees.

• The National Sample Survey Office (NSSO) has released findings from the Household Consumption
Expenditure Survey (HCES) conducted from August 2022 to July 2023.
• This survey aimed to assess the Household Monthly Per Capita Consumption Expenditure (MPCE) across
various demographics, spanning rural and urban sectors, states, union territories, and socio-economic
groups.
• Per capita monthly household consumption expenditure more than doubled from 2011-12 to 2022-23.
• Average rural spending increased to ₹3,773 from ₹1,430, while urban spending rose to ₹6,459 from
₹2,630.
• Bottom 5% of India‟s rural population had an average MPCE of ₹1,441, whereas it was ₹2,087 in urban
areas.
• Top 5% of India‟s rural and urban population had an average MPCE of ₹10,581 and ₹20,846,
respectively.
• MPCE was highest in Sikkim (Rural – ₹7,787, Urban – ₹12,125) and lowest in Chhattisgarh (Rural –
₹2,575, Urban – ₹4,557).
• Rural-urban disparity in MPCE was highest in Meghalaya (83%), followed by Chhattisgarh and Jharkhand
(77%).
• MPCE was highest in Chandigarh (Rural – ₹7,467, Urban – ₹12,577) and lowest in Ladakh (₹4,062) and
Lakshadweep (₹5,511) for rural and urban areas, respectively.

Science & Technology

• For the first time, an international collaboration of researchers has successfully demonstrated the laser
cooling of Positronium, a short-lived hydrogen-like atom that provides an ideal testing ground for bound-
state quantum electrodynamics.
• In the recently published paper in the Physical Review Letters, the AEgIS team has described the laser
cooling of Positronium atoms achieved from ~380 Kelvin (106.85 degrees Celsius) to ~170 Kelvin
(minus 103.15 degrees Celsius), using a 70-nanosecond pulsed alexandrite-based laser system.

State/UT News
• The Maharashtra Cabinet has approved a draft bill to extend a 10 percent reservation to the Maratha
community in both educational institutions and government employment.
• This move follows a report submitted by the Maharashtra Backward Class Commission (MBCC) justifying
the extension beyond the 50 percent cap.
• Currently, the state already reserves 10 percent for the Economically Weaker Section (EWS), with the
Maratha community being the primary beneficiaries.
• Marathas claim 85 percent of this reservation, highlighting their significant presence within the EWS
category.
• CITCO (Chandigarh Industrial and Tourism Development Corporation) introduces a pizza maker near
Sukhna Lake, producing hot pizzas in three minutes, a first in North India.
• The pizza vending machine is the only one operational in India
 • Madhya Pradesh government has announced a groundbreaking initiative – the introduction of a „bag-less

• The Forest Department in Uttar Pradesh‟s Gonda district, in collaboration with the Turtle Survival

conservation reserve along the Sarju river, a tributary of the Ghaghra river.
• The presence of the „crowned river turtle‟ (Hardella thurjii) is particularly significant, as it nests and lays
eggs in river water, unlike other turtle species found in the region.

• Government of Kerala, unveiled the logo and web portal of the Kerala Brand to increase the domestic
and global demand for high-quality products made in Kerala.
• The logo of Kerala Brand carries the motto „Nanma‟, a Malayalam expression which translates to
„Goodness‟.
• All the products under the brand will be imprinted with the wording „Made-in-Kerala‟ to tap into the
domestic and global markets.
• Manik Saha, Chief Minister of Tripura, launched the CM Jan Arogya Yojana (CMJAY), a universal health
insurance scheme for all. With this launch, Tripura became the first Northeastern state to launch a
universal health cover.
• This is in line with the Ayushman Bharat Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana (AB-PMJAY), a national
public health insurance scheme of the government of India.
• The scheme offers universal health insurance coverage and it will benefit 4.15 lakh families of Tripura
and provide cover of Rs 5 lakh per family annually.
• The scheme will provide cover to families irrespective of income level.
• CMJAY will also cover the Group C and D employees of the government of Tripura.
• Tripura Government will spend around Rs 104 crore towards the implementation of this scheme in 2024.
• Under this scheme, the patients will get free medicines for 15 days after being discharged from a critical
illness.
• Haryana Chief Minister Manohar Lal Khattar inaugurated the “Savera” program, a groundbreaking
initiative aimed at early detection and prevention of breast cancer in women. Developed in collaboration
with the Medanta Foundation and the Health Department, Savera leverages the unique ability of visually
impaired women to conduct breast cancer screenings.
• The program capitalizes on the naturally heightened tactile sensitivity possessed by visually impaired
individuals.
