COMPREHENSION, GRAMMAR AND VOCABULARY
(2) Read the text.
Tyrannosaurus Rex
The Tyrannosaurus rex was one of the largest
of the land predator dinosaurs. The T - rex
measured up to forty three feet long and
weighed as much as seven and half tons. The
dinosaur is often used in movies and films
such as Jurassic park due to its size and overall
fearsome image.
The T - rex ate meat from other animals and dinosaurs, however, there is much
debate over whether the Tyrannosaurus Rex was a predator (hunted and killed
it's own food) or whether it was a scavenger (meaning it stole food from other
predators). Many scientists think that the dinosaur did both. A lot depends on
how fast the dinosaur was. Some say the T - Rex was fast and could easily
catch its own meals. Others say that the dinosaur was slow and would use its
fearsome jaws to scare off other predators and take their kills.
Here are some other interesting T - Rex facts:
* The T - Rex had a life span around 30 years.
* T - Rex is from the Greek word and meaning Tyrant Lizard.
* The dinosaur has many similar features to birds. One thought is that they
were warm blooded like birds, rather than cold - blooded like reptiles.
* Its arms were too short to reach its mouth.
* It lived in North America in river valleys and forests.
* It could probably eat as much as 500 pounds of meat in a single bite.
* Their babies may have been covered in feathers.

• Listen to the passage carefully.

• I will read the passage three times.
1 st time - Listen only
2 nd time - Listen and answer
3rd time - Check your answers.
One day Anita's mother Rita wanted to go to the weekly fair to buy vegetables
and meat. She got ready; she put on old clothes. She knew that it had rained last
week and roads were full of mud.
Anita wanted to go too. Her mother said, no. She explained that the road was
muddy. Anita began to cry. She cried softly at first and her mother took no notice.
Therefore, Anita began to cry louder.
Rita knew that is was not going to be easy but she said, "Get ready then. You
can come with me." Anita stopped crying. She put on her new pair of slippers. She
had got these slippers for her birthday.
Just before the market place, they saw a big, deep pool of mud. They had to
cross it. Rita went into the mud pool. Anita followed.
When Anita came out she looked at her. She saw that she had only one slipper.
They looked for the lost slipper. They could not find it.
Anita began to cry. She cried this time because she had not listened to her
mother. Anita said, "After this, I will always listen to you. You know what is best for
me."

First Semester Examination March 2020
Speaking Test - English
Grade 3

The purpose of the exam is to find how the students are able to communicate in
English and to give them confidence in the use of English. The child should not be
made to feel that he/she is being subjected to a severe test of language competency.

Guidelines for Examiners/Teachers

NB : Every teacher should read the criteria for awarding marks according to the mark scheme.

(1) Only one student is tested at a time.

(2) Demonstrate/simulate in the class, (preferably more than once) how the examination will be
conducted. Practice tests should be done to make the students familiar and comfortable with
the procedure. Do not use any of the questions that are to be asked at the test itself.
(3) The venue for the test is a corner of your classroom. It should be prepared before the test.
(4) The oral examination should be conducted during the last 10 minutes of an English lesson
only. Always use English only. Speak slowly and clearly using a friendly tone. (It is important
to remember this is not an elocution test.)

(5) During the time of the test, the other students should not be able to see/hear what the topics of
the tests are and the questions etc. The class must be given a task to complete while one
student is being tested. Co-teachers can supervise the carrying out of the task. If/When
possible, try to obtain help from one of your colleagues to supervise the class.
(6) The examination is to be conducted in three parts. At all times smile, be cheerful, and have a
friendly attitude.
Part I - Dialogue : Ask the student a few general questions to break the ice and to
make the child feel comfortable. Once he/she appears settled, ask the candidate to select one of the
topics offered face down.Encourage the child to have a conversation with you, on the topic
specified in the question. This part of the test ought to take about 2 – 3 minutes.

contd.....to page 2
2
Grade 3 English Speaking Test contd.....from page 1
Part II - Picture description : Once the child speaks comfortably/confidently, point
to the pictures you have face down on the desk. Ask him/her to pick one of random.
Prompting would be necessary to encourage the child. After the candidate has selected the
picture, Give a few minutes for the student to think of a story. Motivate the child to relate the
story in his/her own way. This part should take about 2 - 3 minutes.

Part III - Reading out loud : Reading out loud (pronunciation) is assessed as
continuous evaluation during class sessions from mid February until the end of the study period,
rather than tested separately during oral exams.
If you teach multiple subjects to the same group, you may even assess their reading during
other subjects. During the relevant study period, give each child the opportunity to read a text
that is designed for her/his age and allocate marks according to the grid given.

Assess each student once only. Just before the student starts reading, simply inform her/ him
to read out loud carefully and clearly (she/he need not come before the class) and that you
will be giving marks for the English oral test if she/he reads well.
At the end of the reading, comment and thank the student for doing the test. (E.g. You did
well. Thank you.)

(7) At all stages of the test, the candidates must be encouraged to speak out and express
themselves. Use questions with the question words, Who, What, When, Where, Which.
Yes/No questions may be asked provided students have been trained to explain the reasons for
the Yes/No. The child should not be discouraged in any manner, either verbally, through
interruptions or through body language, once he/she starts to speak.

(8) The certified pictures, topics and mark sheets to be used at the tests will be provided in
advance.

(9) Marks awarded to the candidates for all three sections must be recorded in the Student
Information Book; the individual grids with marks filled in must be attached to the first
Semester English answer script.

(10) The total score for orals should be calculated and converted to 10%.
