The Importance of Social Studies As A Subject Course
Social studies refers to a field of study which is concerned with man and his
interaction with his social and physical environment; deals with human relationships; and
its central function is identical to the central purpose of education which is the
definition itself has provided the significance of studying social studies. In a simple
sense, it provides learners a broad knowledge on how to deal with the society in terms of
interacting with people and environment. It hones minds and souls to produce rational
citizens who are capable of making informed and reasoned decisions for the public good.
This field of study enhances one’s mind to participate in the community and show moral
and civic virtues. These virtues sharpened the minds of young people to be responsible
Social studies as a subject course has provide young people an opportunity to dig
the past and have deeper understanding of their origin through studying history,
religion and sociology. These disciplines have provide learners a deep understanding
about culture, politics, language, and evolution. Upon learning these disciplines, they can
be able to identify the reason why such traditions are practice and the way a country
should be governed. It enhances the critical thinking skills of young people thus resulting
to them addressing societal and global concerns using the means of literature and
technology which could be use by the leaders to reflect about their actions and decisions
to be made. The sole purpose of having social studies as a subject course is to help
produce competent and responsible citizens who are capable of leading their country in
times of economic, social and global crisis through making rational decisions. And to
produce good citizens who leads the nation to be “a culturally diverse, democratic society
in an interdependent world”.
