The Importance of Social Studies as a Subject Course

by Hershey Marie H. Abarri

(An essay about the importance of Social Studies as a subject course and the reasons behind its
significance.)

Social studies refers to a field of study which is concerned with man and his

interaction with his social and physical environment; deals with human relationships; and

its central function is identical to the central purpose of education which is the

development of democratic citizenship. (Michaelis, 1956; and Paleeri, 2019) The

definition itself has provided the significance of studying social studies. In a simple

sense, it provides learners a broad knowledge on how to deal with the society in terms of

interacting with people and environment. It hones minds and souls to produce rational

citizens who are capable of making informed and reasoned decisions for the public good.

This field of study enhances one’s mind to participate in the community and show moral

and civic virtues. These virtues sharpened the minds of young people to be responsible

citizens of their country and provide quality service to their fellowmen.

Social studies as a subject course has provide young people an opportunity to dig

the past and have deeper understanding of their origin through studying history,

anthropology, geography, psychology, economics, archaeology, political science, law,

religion and sociology. These disciplines have provide learners a deep understanding

about culture, politics, language, and evolution. Upon learning these disciplines, they can

be able to identify the reason why such traditions are practice and the way a country

should be governed. It enhances the critical thinking skills of young people thus resulting
to them addressing societal and global concerns using the means of literature and

technology which could be use by the leaders to reflect about their actions and decisions

to be made. The sole purpose of having social studies as a subject course is to help

produce competent and responsible citizens who are capable of leading their country in

times of economic, social and global crisis through making rational decisions. And to

produce good citizens who leads the nation to be “a culturally diverse, democratic society

in an interdependent world”.
