Reflection Essay #3

Going into English Composition 2 felt like an entire new world of writing. A complete

change of prompts and organization was something I wasn’t ready for. For the first essay I

struggled a lot with time management and being able to find a bunch of peer reviewed sources

due to last semester we’d only need to look for one, analyze and write about it. The first essay

required 10 peer reviewed sources which took a while since my topic, which was nature vs.

Nurture, didn’t have many sources to begin with, so I had to resort to online sources. For the

second essay I didn’t struggle as much, it was only time consuming due to personal reasons but

overall, it went well. I figured out how to search up specific keywords to find more sources that

relate close to my topic. Everything that I learned from the previous essays I applied to the third

essay, there wasn’t anything left out because it was a learning experience throughout the whole

way.

As I’ve said before, the research and analysis on peer reviewed journals is a critical and

useful skill that I’ve acquired, so I can apply the same skills to my psychology and criminal

justice courses since they fall under the same umbrella. Another category that was incredibly

useful to gain some experience is the peer review workshop. In the work place it is common to

have a paper analyzed by another set of eyes, or by multiple people before it is published, so

going through this process I had each first draft reviewed by my partner, and she responded with

good constructive feedback which helped develop my second and final draft.

The creation of an argument helped me improve my writing because throughout the

process I had to research both sides of the argument. After some time of developing my

knowledge upon both sides, I overcame writers’ block and wrote with a flow. For example, with

my main topic, Nature vs. Nurture, both sides are critical to be deeply researched to understand

what side I would agree on, and how I would enforce my facts and evidence. Following this

sequence would help me approach writing tasks in a much more efficient way since the

profession I want to enter is psychology, a part of the job would be writing tasks with supporting

and counter arguing ongoing debates.

One of my best writing strengths that was commented on are my introductions and

closing statements. I’ve never really liked writing a summary on what I’m going to write about

or what I already wrote, so instead I drift away with the words into a different world of deep

connection and hidden messages. For example, my closing statement on my third essay referred

to a hidden message at the end stating “...thus beginning with the guidance of a hand.” makes a

direct connection to the topic in hand, which is Nature vs. Nurture. A major writing weakness

that was brought up multiple times was staying on topic in the middle paragraphs. I’ve always

struggled with long essays, especially in the thousands to stay on topic since I would at times

start to ramble about different segments of the topic. These strengths and weaknesses stayed

consistent throughout the three essays, but over time it did get slightly better with an increase of

positive feedback for the third essay.

The most challenging aspect of the third essay was rolling it out on time. This was more

of a personal challenge to me since I have a heavy workload with two different jobs and a

business to run, I only had time to write out the introduction for the first draft so my partner can

have something to criticize. Later when I found time to start analyzing my sources to build a

supporting argument to a side, I started to realize how many sections I had to bring up to build a

strong connection to the main topic. But at the end it all went smoothly since I finished analyzing

the sources, I knew exactly what I wanted to write about and how I was going to roll it out. At

the end of the day, it’s all about completing the aspect of research to make the writing portion

easier. It’s a skill I still need to develop but with all of the english classes I’ve taken throughout

my school career, it will slowly start coming together at the end when I start to pursue my

profession of psychology.
