Information Sheet 1.3-1

sSelect Color of the Nail Polish according to Client’s Preference

Learning Objectives:
After reading this INFORMATION SHEET, YOU MUST be able to:
1. Assess the nail structures and nail conditions of the clients;
2. Consider the client’s desire on a particular enamel colors; and
3. Choose enamel colors based on client skin tone.

Introduction:
After cleaning the finger nails and toenails including hand and arm massage,
you may now start selecting color of the nail polish according to client’s preference.

LET US STUDY!

People ask….

1. What nail polish color is best for my skin tone?

2. What color nail polish looks good with dark skin?
3. What is an olive skin tone?
4. What color of nail polish goes with everything?

How to choose the right nail polish color?

According to become gorgeous and many other sources, the most important
thing you should know when discovering how to choose the right nail polish color
involves your skin tone. There are generally hard and fast rules for picking out a
color based on your skin tone. For instance, fairer skin looks best with dark colors,
especially those that have a blue base. Medium skin tones fare well with dark red
shades; while darker tones can carry just about any color.

There are literally hundreds of options today when it comes to nail color. The
range of color of today’s nail polishes is so vast it is almost unbelievable. How do
you choose nail polish colors that are right for you? Let’s look at some factors you
should consider when choosing a nail color?

1. Pay Attention to Season

Different color of nail polish work well with different seasons.
In the summer time, you may want to choose lighter shades or possibly
even more vibrant colors with your nail polish choices.
Those pale, translucent pinks and pale lavenders may be appropriate for
paler or rose colored skin.

2. Base it on the Event

Choosing the right nail polish based on the occasion or the event you’re
attending is a good idea.
Obviously, you’ll want a different shade for work or for school than you will
for going out at night.
In a professional environment, neutral shades are a good idea
Conversely at evening activities you can go all out with metallic shades
and brighter color.

3. Match your skin

Your skin tone has a lot to do with picking out the perfect polish.
You need something that complements the color of your skin.
If you’re very fair skinned, lighter shades with pink or blue undertones are
a good idea.
Dark skin looks wonderful with lighter color as well, but also looks
incredible with dramatic, dark shades.

4. Coordinate with your make-up

Some women like to make their nail polish match their make-up.
Generally, the match up occurs between your polish and the shade of
lipstick you choose to wear.
Having matching colors of lipstick and nail polish always gives the wearer
a sense of that high fashion vibe
we are always striving to look our
best.

5. Complement your clothing

The same thing goes for the
clothes in your wardrobe.
If you have a lot of purple clothes
and look good in these, then a
corresponding shade of polish will
probably look great on you too.
Fashion is all about coordination
of colors and the ability to put an
outfit together with just about
anything and make it look fierce.
Don’t try and force colors on
yourself that don’t fit your natural
beauty. Embrace what you have
and make the most of it.

6. Based on skin color

If you’re fair skinned, you’ll most likely look best in lighter shades of nail
polish with pink undertones. Nail polishes that have blue undertones may
also work well with fair skin. Fair skinned women tend to look their best in
berry red shades of nail polish with a lighter color for day and more
dramatic shade for the evening wear.
If your skin has more olive undertones and is a bit darker, you’ll probably
look fantastic in shades of bronze, russet, orange, gold and deep reds.
These shades of nail polish really tend to play up olive skin.
If you have dark skin, you can get by with almost any rich, deep or vibrant
shades of nail polish including vibrant reds and purples. People with a
darker skin color can effectively wear much more dramatic colors day or
night.

7. Go with a trend
Sometimes trend get a little crazy and should be avoided at all cost and
that goes for nail trends as well.
However, there are times when the going trends for nail polish are really
spectacular and you can certainly choose the right nail polish based on
that.

8. Experiment
There’s no saying that the traditional rules of nail polish have to apply.
Sometimes you have to go with the whole trial and error approach.
Find out which colors work and don’t work by trying new ones.

9. Mix and Match

If you can’t decide between different nail polishes or really want to go all
out, don’t be afraid to do it.
You can layer your nail polish so there are two (2) or more colors on each
fingers, or you paint different nails in different shades.
Painting your nails is a great way to express yourself, as long as you have
the right nail polish for your look

Nail Enameling
Nail enamel is used to coat the nail plate for a number of reasons:
To adorn the nail;
To disguise stained nails;
To add temporary strength to weak nails; and
To coordinate with the clothes or make-up

Types of enamel
Colored polish-this has a matt finish and requires atop coat
application in order to add color and glossiness to the nails.

Base coat-strong colored enamel that protects the nail from staining. It
also gives good grip to enamel and smooth out minor surface
irregularities.

Top coat-gives a sheen to cream enamel and adds longer wear as it

prevents chipping.

Do not apply enamel under these circumstances

If there are diseases and disorders of the nail plate and surrounding skin.
If the client is allergic to nail enamel.
If nails are short or bitten. It should be painted only with pale enamels to avoid
attracting attention.

A. Correct Position Of Hand While Giving A Manicure Correct Position

According to Salon Policies and Procedures

Correct position of client's hand incorrect position of client's hand

Use rolled towel or hand cushion in giving a manicure, client's arm weight will
rest on the cushion instead of holding it. Repetitive motion, takes a toll on your
muscles and joints and can cause long-term problems, such as arthritis and carpal
tunnel syndrome. (Carpal tunnel syndrome. It is a type of compression neuropathy, a
nerve damage caused by compression and irritation of the median nerve in the wrist.
The nerve is compressed within the carpal tunnel, a bony canal in the palm side of
the wrist that provides passage for the median nerve to the hand and can be due to
trauma from repetitive works.)

Correct position of foot while a giving a pedicure

Correct position of client's leg Incorrect position of client's leg

Correct position of client's leg

Elevate client's feet and place their feet or legs on a footrest that bears
their weight. During the massage portion of a service, the footrests can bear
the majority of the weight so nail technician can limit pressure on their back,
shoulders, and neck
Incorrect position of client's foot
Don’t bear the weight of a client’s leg by resting the foot in your lap or
by using your own strength to lift and lower the leg. This position will cause
strains in the muscles in your shoulders and back, and, because you are
connected to the client, it also reduces your mobility to be agile as you work
through the different steps of the service

Correct Position Of A Pedicurist In Giving A Pedicure Service

Correct position of pedicurist Incorrect position of pedicurist

Correct position of pedicurist

You should keep your back straight and supported while giving a
pedicure service, and use both the height adjustment of your chair and of the
footrest to keep the foot at a workable level instead of straining the body.
Suggest your client to bend their knees and move their feet to appropriate
positions.

Incorrect position of nail technician while giving a pedicure service

If you need to perform close-up, detailed work, there is a tendency to

round the shoulders and extend the neck to get as close to the foot as
possible, which will cause strain to the muscles in the upper body and the
entire back. Worse will happen because you will add enormous strain to your
body as you try to get into a position that will give you best perspective.

Correct position of a pedicurist feet while giving a manicure service

Correct position of pedicurist's feet Incorrect position of pedicurist's feet

Correct position of pedicurist's feet

As nail technician, you may twist your chair because you want to get
closer to your work. Instead of contorting yourself into this position, it might
benefit you from a table with a cutout that allows you to sit straight in your
chair but still work on the client’s hands from an angle. You can improve your
posture even without a cut-out in the desk by strengthening your core muscles
so you are able to sit straight for longer periods of time. It is also important to
develop a habit of keeping both feet on the floor to prevent the unbalanced
compression.

Incorrect position of pedicurist's legs

This nail technician has her shoulders rolled forward, her left arm is
resting on the table, which pushes her shoulder up, she is twisted in her chair,
and her legs are crossed. This will cause more compression on one side of
the body than the other.

MANICURE AND PEDICURE

1. Nail File Hold the file firmly in the right or left hand(as the case may be),
with the thumb underneath it for support and the other four fingers on its
upper surface. Place the file slightly under the free edge and file the nail
from corner to center, shaping the nail. Never file back and forth; this
would cause the nails to crack and split. Do not file deep into the corners;
this weakens the nails, hurt the skin and cause ingrown nails

2. Emery Board It is held in the same manner as the nail file. Bevel the
rough surface of the nail using the fine side to smoothen it. Emery boards
are discarded after use on one person.

3. Orangewood
Stick It is held in the same
manner as in writing with a
pencil. To loosen cuticle,
work around nail; for applying oil or solvent, slightly dip the cotton-tipped
orangewood stick and workaround the base of the nail; to clean under the
free edge of the nail, from the center toward each side, with gentle
pressure so that live tissue eat the root of the nail will not be injured.
4. Cuticle Nail Pusher It is held in the same manner as in writing with a
pencil. The dull spade side is used to push back and loosen the cuticles.
Keep cuticle moist using cuticle remover while working. Use the cuticle
pusher in a flat position to remove dead cuticle adhering to the nail without
scratching the nail plate. In using the pusher, avoid too much pressure to
prevent injury on tissues.

5. Cuticle Nipper Pick up the cuticle nipper by the handles and turn the
cutting edges towards you; place the bent tip of the index finger over the
top of the shank. Place the thumb on the side of the handle and the
remaining fingers over the opposite handle. Use it with utmost care to
remove dead cuticle and hangnails so as not to injure live tissue

6. Nail Cutter Hold clippers with cutting edges downward between thumb,
index and middle finger. Press clipper handles by squeezing them together
and remove excess nail length.
7. Nail Brush Insert the ring finger and pinky in the nail brush handle and
brush the nails with a downward motion from the base to the fingertips to
clean the nails and fingers.

8. Nail Buffer Place the thumb and the ring finger under the handle of the
buffer while the index and the middle fingers are on its top and the pinky is
on its side. Apply a small amount of powder over the buffer then buff the
nails with downward strokes from the base to the free edge of each nail
until a smooth clear gloss has been obtained. Buffing helps in giving the
nail natural gloss and increases blood circulation to the finger tips. To
prevent heating and burning sensation, lift the buffer from the nail after
each stroke.

The following pictures show how you are going to position the hand
and foot of your client when giving a manicure and pedicure services to avoid
pain in your hands, shoulders and back.

THE BASIC MANICURE

Step One: Wash your hands thoroughly and carefully and dry them completely. Be
sure to use your nail brush to clean beneath the free edge and in the grooves along
the sides of the nail. Your nails are somewhat porous and will become softer when
wet. When they are wet they become more easily damaged.

Step Two: Trim your nails to the desired length. This is always a personal
decision, some people like their nails longer, while others find that shorter nails
better suit their lifestyle. Some people's nails are thinner and more flimsy than others
and cannot support more than a minimal amount of length before they break.

Always try to keep your nails an even length when compared to the other fingers.
Begin with the little finger on each hand and work your way inward. The goal is
uniformity.

Step Three: File the nails to remove sharp or rough edges. Use your nail file to
pare down the nail and shape it as you desire.

Step Four: Once your nails are the desired shape, examine your cuticles. If they
are growing down onto the nail plate or appear to be sticking to the nail plate, you
need to push them back. Apply a dab of lotion to each fingertip on the cuticle, and
massage it in. Give the lotion a few moments to soften the cuticle and then take your
cuticle pusher or orangewood stick and wrap the tip in cotton. Gently rub the padded
tip along the nail plate at the base of the nail and push the cuticle back away from
the nail.

Be sure to rub away any remaining dead skin residue. Gentle is the key here; the
cuticle is usually very sensitive and can be painful when damaged. A light
touch is usually sufficient to push back any cuticle.

Step Five: Examine the nail plate. If there are any ridges in the nail plate, you
can use the sanding block to gentle grind them down. Gentle pressure and small
circular motions work best. Once the surface of the nail plate looks and feels smooth,
you're done.

Step Six: It's time to finish your nails. Some people simply want a coat of clear
polish for a clean, glossy look. Others - mostly women - like to have color applied.
Many men don't like the idea of even clear polish, and prefer to have their nails
buffed.

How to apply nail enamel?

 Apply Base Coat

Apply base coat with long strokes to the left hand, starting from the little
finger to the thumb, then to the right hand, starting with the little finger
to the thumb.

 Apply Liquid Polish/Colored Polish

Dip the camel’ hair brush into the polish and brush on to the nails. Wipe
of excess polish by pressing it gently against the sides of the bottle.
Apply the polish lightly and quickly, using sweeping strokes, from the
base to the free edge of the nail.

 Apply Top Or Seal Coat

Apply top coat to the left hand nails with long strokes, and then apply it
on the right hand in the same manner, Brush around the under tips of
the nails for added support and protection.

HANDLING AND USE OF CHEMICALS

Many different types of products are used when providing nail specialty
services. These products contain a large variety of chemical ingredients. Many nail-
product ingredients evaporate easily producing vapors and
odors that may be inhaled or contact eyes and mucus
membranes of nail salon workers and clients. Also, certain
procedures during nail care generate dust which may be
inhaled. Skin contact is also inherent in the use of nail-care
products. Some types of chemicals commonly found in nail
salon products are known to be associated with adverse
health effects at relatively high exposure levels. Hence,
concern has been raised about whether nail salon workers
and clients could be at risk for such adverse health effects

Antiseptic Solution is an agent that reduces or prevents the

multiplication of microorganisms

Benzalconium Chloride is a yellow-white powder prepared

in an aqueous solution used as surface disinfectant and
topical antiseptic.

Bleaching Soap is a soap formulated to whiten the

skin.

Cuticle Oil is a mixture of fats and waxes containing

lanolin and petroleum base to soften and lubricate
skin around the nails.

Nail Polish Remover (Acetone) is an organic solvent used to dissolve old polish on
nails.
Quick Dry is a liquid applied to colored nail polish to
dry faster.

Manicure and Pedicure Tips

1. Manicure or pedicure always looks fresher if you have the time to remove
polish completely and re-apply fresh base coat, polish and top coat.
2. Remove the hang nails with cuticle nipper.
3. The best way to prevent hang nails is to use cuticle cream oil or lotion
massaged into the cuticle and nail.
4. Use metal file or emery board in filing. Begin from the corner going to the
center of the nail in one direction.
5. Never file from side to side on a natural nail. This may weaken the stress
points of the free edge.
6. For a perfect manicure or pedicure use only one basecoat, two coats of your
chosen polish and one top coat.
7. Toe nails should be trimmed but not too short. File them straight to prevent
ingrown nails.
8. Yellow and stained toe nails are usually caused by wearing polish without
basecoat.
9. Apply an antiseptic immediately if the skin is accidentally cut.
10. Keep all containers covered and labeled.
11. Use dry hands to hold or move containers,
12. Handle sharp pointed implements carefully and
avoid dropping them.

LET US REMEMBER

1. Never cut toenails down at the sides. This increases the chance of
ingrown toenails and may lead to infection.
2. Hand massage should be done prior to the application of polish
3. Apply the enamel using sweeping strokes, starting from the base to the
free edge of the nails.

INFORMATION SHEET 1.3-3

Check and Analyze the Outcome of Nail Service Result

Learning Objectives:

After reading this Information Sheet, you should be able to:

1. Check and analyze the nail service outcome;
2. Use appropriate tools to remove excess polish;
3. Apply quick drying enamel on polished nails; and
4. Clean the workstation after the service

Introduction:

This lesson deals with the checking and analysis of the nail service outcome
and re-touching procedures. Removal of excess polish and application of quick
drying enamel on nails are also discussed.
LET US STUDY!

Definition of terms:

Liquid nail polish or lacquer – a solution used to color or gloss the nail.

Nail dryer – a solution that protects the nail polish against stickiness
and dulling. It can be used sprayed or brushed on.

Nail polish removers – organic solvents used to dissolve old polish on nails.

Top coat or sealer – a liquid applied over the ail polish. It protects the
polish and minimizes its chipping and cracking.

After the nails have been cleaned, massaged and polished, carefully re-
examine them and the cuticles. Excess polish is removed using a cotton-tipped
orangewood stick dipped into nail polish remover. Apply it carefully around the
cuticles and nail edges. Small bits of cuticle are lifted using tweezers.

Look closely if there are chipping, cracking or peeling

Chipping may be explained by any of the following:

The nail enamel was not thick enough because of over thinning with
solvent
Base coat was not used
Grease was left on the nail plate prior to enameling
The nail plate is flaking
The enamel was artificially and quickly dried

Peeling may have the following explanations:

No top coat was used
Successive coats not allowing it to dry between applications
Too thick enamel due to the evaporation of the solvent
Grease left on the nail plate prior to enameling

Top coat or seal coat is applied to the left hand with long strokes. And then to
the right hand in the same manner. Brush around and under tips of nails for added
support and protection. Then spray with nail dryer.

As an additional service, apply hand lotion with light manipulations over the
hands, from wrists to fingertips after the complete drying of the top coat.

Workstation is then cleaned and organized in preparation for the next patron.

FINAL CLEAN UP

Sanitize used manicuring implements and place them in a cabinet sanitizer

Place used materials (tissue, cotton, emery board, etc.) into closed trash bin
or plastic bag attached to the manicuring table
Wipe manicuring table with disinfectant and put every thing in order
Clean the tops of nail polish bottles with polish remover
Inspect the manicuring table drawer for cleanliness and order
Wash and dry your hands, and then sanitize them with alcohol.

AFTER CLIENT CLEANING UP

Close all nail polish bottles securely and return them neatly to your cabinet
Using your polish remover, clean all tools vigorously. Dried polish left on tools
will cause damage
Throw away all cotton balls, paper towels and other trash
If you do not have another client, please sit patiently until the end of the event
Please do not leave the event until signing out.

LET US REMEMBER

 Retouching procedure is done only after careful checking and examining of

the nail service outcome
 Always keep your workstation clean, organized and prepared for the
succeeding client.
