My home is in the old section of Cairo. My neighborhood is a mass of tiny streets surrounded on
all sides by thousands of years of history. I live near the university where my father teaches. He
teaches Islamic history, so I know a lot about the place where I live. His students often come to visit
us. My house is hundreds of years old, and it looks it. The rooms are small and dark. The kitchen has
a few modern appliances. The water supply is also unpredictable except when it rains. Then the roof
always leaks somewhere. We have a sun-filled courtyard full of beautiful flowers. Even on the hottest
days; the thick mud and stone walls keep us cool and comfortable. Living in my neighborhood, I can
never forget where I come from. I am literally surrounded by history.

Integrated Pest Management
There is no best way to deal with pests in agriculture. Pesticides which are commonly used may
cause many problems. I think combining different management operations is the most effective way to
control pests.
Firstly, the chemicals in the pesticides may build up as residues in the environment and in the soil
which absorbs the chemicals. This reduces the quality of farm products.
Secondly, pests can gradually become resistant to pesticides. This means that newer and
stronger ones have to be developed.
Lastly, some pesticides affect non target plants and animals such as fish and bees. This affects
the ecology and environment as well.
So, understanding the ecology of an area helps a lot in pest control. Pesticides should be chosen
and applied carefully so they don't affect the ecological balance and environment.
Therefore, integrated pest management is a safe and more effective option to fight pest in
agriculture and livestock.

Coffee cherries must be processed soon after harvesting to prevent the pulp from fermenting
around the bean. There are two' types of processing known as dry and wet processing.
Dry processing is sometimes called "unwashed" or "natural" processing. Cherries are spread
outside for 15 to 20 days. The cherries are exposed to the sun and stirred regularly to help them dry
evenly. The dried cherries are then hulled by hand or by machine, removing the dried out pulp and
parchment. This is the way coffee has been processed for centuries.
The other type of processing is known as wet or "washed" processing. A few hours after the
cherries are harvested; the pulp is removed from the cherries. The beans are then washed in a
process that involves cycles of fermentation and rinsing. Small amounts of fermentation don't hurt the
bean, but softens the remaining pulp and skin, making them able to be easily rinsed off. This is a
better type of processing because it causes less damage to the bean than dry processing.
Once the coffee beans have been processed, they are sorted by size and looks, then bagged
ready for shipment. Coffee beans that don't make the "grade" for export are normally used on a local
basis.
The most important step in getting coffee into your cup is the roasting. Roasting coffee is both an
art and a science, requiring years of experience and the right type of roasting equipment.
Green coffee beans are roasted at temperatures ranging from 370 to 450 degrees for up to 20
minutes. During this time they lose 18 to 23% of their weight and increase in size by 35 to 60%. They
change colour from a light straw green colour to medium brown or dark brown, depending upon the
degree of roast. The bean splits open and brings out the rich aroma of the coffee.
Roasting is merely the "cooking" of the bean. How much the bean is roasted is what is called the
degree of roast. The less it is cooked, the "lighter" or "milder" the roast. There are different terms used
for the degree of roast. Some use the words Mild—Mild—Medium—Medium—Medium—Dark—Dark.
Today, another common naming of roasting is after countries-American roast, French roast, Italian
roast, Turkish roast. These all go from light to dark, from mild in taste to down-right burnt tasting.

Last week was a hectic week. I have been touring East Java and Bali. There were so many things
that I've experienced that it's difficult to write about all of them.
I arrived in Yogyakarta on Sunday. I stayed in a cheap accommodation, a wisma. The room was
clean and I could get hot water to bathe. On Monday, I went with a tour group to visit Borobudur and
the Hindu temples in Prambanan. Some of these temples are more than twelve hundred years old.
They date well beyond the churches in my hometown in Europe. I was amazed at the enormity of the
construction. I'm sure they did not have the heavy machines we have today to raise and lay those
huge blocks of stones. The carvings on the walls were another feature of the construction.
I'm getting used to the spicy food served here. I have eaten fresh fish, lamb and beef. I know you
don't eat all this but I've got used to it. On Tuesday I decided to go for a hike to Mount Merapi, but I
found out that it was a difficult climb. So I went to the forest park in Kaliurang. That was a lovely walk
that made me hot and tired. But I managed to cool off in a waterfall in the park, then walked up to a
hill nearby where I could see the smoky, fiery Mount Merapi.

Forestry activists have warned of a sharp increase in the national deforestation rate if the
government fails to deal with the overlapping permits issued for forest concessions and industrial
timber forests.
Greenomics Indonesia's latest study found about 18.4 million hectares of forest concession areas
and forest production had mostly been occupied by plantation and mining companies. Thanks to
permits issued by regents.
"It is an illegal practice. The regents have no rights to issue permits for plantation companies to
operate or occupy forest concessions and industrial areas. Only the Ministry of Forestry can do that,"
Greenomics National Coordinator Vanda Mutia Dewi told the Jakarta Post on Monday.
The government has allocated a total of 60.91 million hectares for forest concession or for
production forests.
"With the overlapping permits, illegal occupation of the forest concession areas and industrial
forest will contribute more to the national deforestation rate than illegal logging practi6e," she said.

jaguar has larger rosette markings, a stronger body and a shorter tail. The jaguar is brownish-yellow
in colour and has spots on the head.
Jaguars live in a variety of locations. The rainforest and wet grasslands of Central and South
America form the habitats of the jaguars.
The jaguar is an excellent hunter. While the other three roaring cats kill their prey by biting it at
the neck, the jaguar kills its prey by biting it through its skull. It usually kills small animals for food but
can attack and kill cattle or deer.

Adoption
Adoption is the process by which people take a child who was not born to them and raise him or
her as a member of their family. By law, adopted children differ from foster children. An adopted child
has all the legal rights of a member of the family that raises him or her. A foster child does not.
Parents place their children up for adoptions for many reasons. Some parents feel they cannot
adequately care for their offspring because of health or economic conditions. Some others, especially
unwed parent, may not want to raise a child.
But there are couples who cannot have children of their own. Adoption gives them opportunity to
raise a family. They can get one from an adoption agency if they have all the requirements asked.
State laws prohibit adoption agencies from revealing the identity of the natural parents to the
adoptive parents. These laws also forbid agencies from disclosing the identity of the adoptive parents
to the natural parents. In some states, the law permits adopted persons who are at least 18 years old
to see their birth certificates including the natural parents' names.
On the contrary, many adopted people worked to change the laws. They argue that people have
a right to know their identity. They said that keeping secret their adoptions records violate their right.
On the other hand, many people feel adoption records should be kept secret. If not, natural
parents might change their minds years later and take the child away from the parents who raised him
or her.
Some experts advise that a child should know of the adoptions by the age of 6 or 7. Surveys
have shown that most adopted children develop normally.
