"Let us laugh", says, W. Mathews, "it is the cheapest luxury man enjoys. It stirs up the
blood, expands the chest, clears away the cobwebs from the brain and gives the whole
system a healthy treatment." So is it not nice to laugh a lot? It is said "laughter is the best
medicine". For those who dislike medicine, sweet or bitter, a good joke that provokes
laughter is prescribed. It is nice to have a good laugh but a "guffaw" may sometimes lock
one's jaws and so it is suggested that those who enjoy a loud guffaw go slow and subside
into a gurgle but the best thing is, as done in Hon'ble courts before Hon'ble judges, just titter.
And finally, I feel that I should smile, laugh heartily (without the predicament of lockjaw)
and be able to enjoy all jokes including ones directed at myself. But never making a laughing
stock of myself in the process. Let us remember the wise saying, "He is not laughed at that
laughs at himself."

b) Read the passage carefully and answer the questions given below : 5
More people are looking for jobs than ever before. The result is that for every job
advertised, there is a large number of candidates offering to do it. Getting jobs is, therefore
becoming more and more difficult. This is an age of competition. If you want to complete
for a job, it is necessary for you to go on improving your qualifications. In competitive
market only the best qualified person has a chance of being successful. For this, one must
learn how to get more done.
Do you remember the old saying, ‘Well begun is half done’? The first and the most
difficult step is to begin. How often do we hear people complain that they are not in the
mood to work! It is, however, easy to control one’s action. That is why, very often, just
getting into the position for work can put us in the mood.
Another very useful way of getting more done is to have a living source of inspiration,
someone who symbolies an idea to be worked for Most of us do not mind doing thing which
others say are good. But we will do our best to achieve something we ourselves like and
admire. If we want to be rated high, it is necessary for us to choose the best model. Yet
another prescription for getting more work done is making conscious efforts to save time.
Overspending time is more harmful than overspending money.

b) Read the following passage carefully and answer the questions below : 5
The wise statement 'All that glitters is not gold' suggests that a man should be very cautions
in judging the quality of a person or an object on the basis of its external appearance. Looks
can often be deceptive and misleading. Portia's beautiful portrait was kept in a lead casket,
and the gold and the silver caskets contained a skull and a blinking fool. Many wooers were
fascinated by the external glitter of the container and erred. Likewise underneath the veneer
of his modesty, Macbeth hid a treacherous murderer and poor Duncan's vision was obscured
by Macbeth's politeness. It is therefore, necessary to depend more on the dictates of ones
conscience and reason than on the attractions of senses and emotions.

It is absolutely true casteism is a very disgraceful scar on the body politics of our
country. In spite of the great advancements that we have made in the different spheres of
our life & our progress in the direction of ameliorating the lot of the scheduled castes has
not been as satisfactory as it should have been. When we compare ourselves with advanced

countries of the world like America, our head really hang in shame to see that the so called

castes.
nu
It was Mahatma Gandhi who first of all paid attention to the miserable lot of the

scheduled castes. He made all possible efforts to raise the so called 'untouchables from the
w
sub-human level of living to the life of human beings. He called than Harijans-the children
w
w
of God, and accordingly demanded for them an equal status in society. He took a very
rational approach in this matter. He had no patience with the old Hindu tradition according
to which a man's status in society is determined by birth. He felt that the Indian society was
originally divided into four classes for the efficient functioning of the social order. It was a
division of labour, not a division of humanity into high & low. For the efficient social
om
functioning all kinds of people are required: intellectuals, traders, fighters and menial
e.c
servants. No class of people is superior or inferior to the other. Every person has his or her
lin
own important function to discharge in society. Mahatma Gandhi propagated these views
on
nu
both from the Pulpit and with his pen. Later on Dr. Ambedkar took up the cudgel on behalf

of the scheduled castes. He insisted that the government grant them a status of respect and
