1. Introduction
1.1. Background
The rate of urbanization in Ethiopia is growing at an alarming rate. According to the 2015
Ethiopian urbanization review, the rate of urbanization in Ethiopia is about 5.4% a year
(Abebawu alemayehu, 2019).The ever increasing growth of staff members and students living in
the campus coupled with poor landscape planning and lack of good landscape beautification in
the university to make the area more attractive already difficult problem of towns throughout
Ethiopia.

Ornamental horticulture is a branch of horticulture which deals with the science & practice of
growing plants for aesthetic uses & improvement of quality of life and our environment. This branch
of horticulture deals with plants and their layout for beautification of the environment. A tremendous
number of plants are classed as ornamentals based on their decorative value and personal choices.
There are seasonal flowering plants, foliage plants, lawn grasses, evergreens, and deciduous shrubs
and trees. Fruit trees grown in home gardens can also be selected for ornamental purposes (Horti

1.2. Importance of campus beautification

Enhancing the student experience: The ultimate goal is to create an environment that enhances
the educational journey of students. Beautified campuses provide spaces that encourage learning,
personal growth, and engagement.

Fostering a sense of identity: The campus is a reflection of an institution’s identity and values.
Beautification efforts should align with these values and help communicate the institution’s
unique character.

Driving enrollment and retention: An attractive campus can positively influence prospective
students’ decisions to enroll and can contribute to higher retention rates by creating a supportive
and enjoyable learning environment.

Promoting sustainability: Campus beautification can integrate sustainable practices, from native
landscaping to energy-efficient building designs. This not only reduces the institution’s
environmental impact but also serves as a valuable educational tool for students.

Creating a lasting legacy: Well-executed campus beautification projects become part of the
institution’s legacy. They contribute to its history and narrative, connecting past, present, and
future generations.

1.2. Statement of the problem


The establishment of a green landscape in the campus will satisfy the basic question of the
people living in the town by providing by creating conformable living condition. The absence of
such green infrastructures made the people in the town is exposed for different problems like
frost problem, dust and unfavorable or non-attractive environmental conditions.

Therefore, establishing a greenery areas with the grand objective of providing recreational center
will have economic, social and environmental benefit to the town and its residents.
Economically, the greenery area will provide valuable asset, making the area more beautiful and
attractive, the jobless youths who are expected to work in the greenery area will get money for
living. Socially, by being a place of recreation, improve human interaction and integration,
increase health improvement and area will attract the youths to spend their time which indirectly
reduce the exposure of the youths from spending their time in other unnecessary areas. In other
words, it saves the people from the series cycles of addiction and build a healthy generation of
youths who cares for their healthy growth and thus in directly contributes for the betterment of
their country. Lastly, by establishing a clean area, the project is going to be a model on the
importance of having a neat environment for a healthy living.

Among the problems facing the university currently are related to inappropriate planting of or
positioning of ornamental plants, both plants and inanimate objects are not selected by
considering their adaptability on the given frosty environment, lack of scientific establishment
and management of lawn, basic landscape beautification components are not included, weak or
no management practices applied even for established plants and other components,
consequently the campus have not appropriate centers of recreation for the students and staffs.
Dou to these reason, the project developers would like to work on creating good awareness about
beautification of landscapes to establish an attractive place for the university.

Regarding need assessment, the project developers observe and understand the urgency of as
giving a special training for campus beautification members which is previously not practiced in
the campus. To make sure that the idea of establishing the pleasant landscape is in the minds of
the municipal officials, the project developers approached them. In the discussion, the
researchers made with the officials of university and campus beautification managers, the idea of
establishing greenery is the top among the list of their priorities.

1.3. Objectives
1.3.1. General objective
The project aims to improve knowledge of Mekdela Amba University beatification office
professionals about landscape beatification.

1.3.2. Specific objectives


 To improve and promote scientific landscape beautification services.
 To inform the types or components of landscapes.
 To give detail information about elements and principles of landscaping.
 To enhance understanding bout lawn establishment and management.
 To teach about the growing, classification and management including pruning, cutting
and training of ornamental plants.

Participants: Twenty, Mekdela Amba University campus beatification office members, field
supervisors, managers and other responsible bodies.

The facilities and services for the training will be provided by the university research community
service coordinator office.
