Read each problem carefully before beginning to work on the answer.
Solve all problems using symbols and then substitute numerical values as a last step.
State all assumptions!
Show your work and draw a box around your final answers.
1) (25 points) Consider the 6-legged water strider pictured below:
These bugs are well known to be capable of walking on water. Their “feet” ~ the end of
their leg that is bent in such a manner to contact the water surface — are coated in wax and
the contact angle, é, between the water surface and their foot is 110°. If the water
strider’s foot is well modeled as a cylinder with length 6 mm and diameter 0.2 mm what
is the maximum weight that a water strider can be and walk on fresh water lakes? As part
of your solution sketch the cross-section of a foot and show the forces involved.
2) (25 points) Consider the viscometer below:
If the block of mass M falls at velocity V and a fluid is located in the gap between the
stationary cylinder with radius R; and the rotating cylinder with diameter Re (both of.
length L) solve for the viscosity 1 of the fluid in terms of the relevant variables. You
may neglect end effects.3) (50 points) Consider the situation below:
where a log of radius R =0.5 m has floated up against a dam of length L= 10 m during a
storm. In the watershed there was an oil tank leak and there now is a layer of oil trapped
behind the log underlain by water.
i. G points) If you were to insert a manometer carefully into the water at point A
from above the dam, how high would the water rise above point A?
(13 points) What is the net force'&n the dam? —— OF THE LOG
(13 points) What is the weight of the log?
iv. (13 points) What is the net moment (or torque) on the log about point A?
v. _ (S.points) What is the specific gravity of the log?
‘Note that no water passes between the log and the dam.
