    Cracks in concrete: Is corrosion

    inevitable?

    Presentation

    Reinforced concrete is designed to limit crack widths, the magnitude of which is


    dependent on the in-service conditions. Since all concrete structures crack to some
    degree, it can be implied that corrosion of the reinforcement is inevitable. Is this the
    case and are current code assumptions tenable?

    Our speaker Dr Chanakya Arya has recently completed an extensive reassessment


    of Concrete Society Technical Report 44 Relevance of cracking and reinforcement
    corrosion, the 2nd edition of which was published in December 2015. He will outline
    his findings and conclusions on this important subject.

    Speaker biography

    Chanakya Arya is a chartered engineer with a PhD in Civil Engineering from Imperial
    College London. He started his career with Tarmac Construction as a site engineer,
    and later worked for

    G. Maunsell and Partners on the design, construction and maintenance of highway


    schemes in the UK and overseas. Before joining UCL he was a lecturer in the
    Department of Civil and Structural Engineering at London South Bank University for
    ten years. His research is focused on the problem of chloride-induced corrosion of
    steel reinforcement in concrete structures, and developing demonstrable cost-
    effective methods of assessing corrosion, and preventing, repairing, and managing
    concrete structures vulnerable to corrosion damage.
