Learning Competencies (Essential Competencies)

The learners apply the basic concepts in Cartesian coordinate system in

understanding in Analytic Geometry and determine the distance and direction of
any line relative to the given points through illustrations.

Objectives:
a. Solve the absolute value difference between two points.
b. Find the distance between two points using Pythagorean Theorem

Let’s Review!!!

In order to find the distance between any two points in horizontal or vertical line, you have to get the absolute va
Hence, the length of the line segment joining the points A and B is given by

x1 A x2 B

A y1
IABI = AB = | x1 - x2 | = | x2 – x1 |

IABI = AB = | y1 - y2 | = | y2 – y1 |

By2
Example: Find the distance between two points

1. 3 and 6 = | 3 – 6 | = | - 3 | = 3or |6–3|=|3|=3

2. -2 and 4 = | -2 – 4 | = | -6 | = 6 or| 4 - (-2) | = | 6 | = 6

Let us now proceed for the distance between any two points, that is, one that covers not

only those points in horizontal and vertical lines but also those points in a

slant line.

Follow the steps below (the first one is done for as an example):

1. Plot the two points with the coordinates shown below.

2. Draw a line to join them and form a right triangle with this line as the hypotenuse.

3. Use the coordinates to find the lengths of the short sides of the triangle.

4.Calculate the distance (d) between the two points (length of the hypotenuse) using

the Pythagorean Theorem. 𝑐2 = a2 + b2

Let’s Understand!!!

See these examples of how to find the distance between two sets of coordinates.

(3, 2) and (8, 9) Solution

d = √ 52 + 7 2
d = √ 74
d = 8.602

(2,4) and (10,8)

d = √ 42 + 8 2
d = √ 80
d = 4√ 5

Let’s Analyze!!!

Situation 1:
Gabriela wants to find the distance between her house on one side of a lake and the

beach on the other side. She marks off a third point forming a right triangle, as shown in the

figure below. Use the Pythagorean Theorem to find the straight-line distance from Gabriela’s

house to the beach.

Solution: √(164 − 202 + (280 − 10)2

√(1442 + (270)2

√20, 736 + 72,900

√93636 = 306 km; distance from house to the beach

Situation 2:
Every morning Jade walks going to school. If she walked 40 m west then 32 m. north,

what is the coordinate of the school if Jade’s house is at the origin?

A. (40, 32) B. (-40, 32) C. (-32, 40) D. (40,-32)

Illustrate it:
N

32

W E
40 Jade’s house is at at (0, 0) S

Therefore, the coordinate of the school is B (-40, 32).
