Self-Assessments

OGL 482: Pro-Seminar II

October 22nd, 2023

Dr. Janice Lawhorn

Section 1: Kuder Career Interests

Upon completion of the Career Interest Assessments, it seems that I landed on Enterprising,

Conventional, and Social as the main three components to my Holland Occupations Code. This

wasn't too much of a surprise to me after reviewing the rest of the categories that I scored lower

in. I feel that I know myself as a worker and leader very well prior to taking these assessments,

allowing me to answer each question with a clear and honest conscience. What mainly interests

me as I navigate through potential career options, is pursuing Educational Leadership and

immersing myself into the wonders of the Education Community. I was enthusiastic to see this

listed, as it feels like a confirmation that I know where I want to make an impact in within a

community, I am dedicated to serving. I would like to continue to interpret my results and

analyze the different paths I can partake on with this assessment. I feel that the social category

aspect is what brings that drive to want to instill confidence in others to develop the tools to

navigate through situations by leading with empathy and the will to want to help others succeed.

Section 2: Kuder Skills

According to the results of my Skills Confidence Assessment, it is apparent that my top-rated

skills land in the interests of Social, Enterprising, and Conventional very similar to my results of

the Career Interests Assessment. I would have to say after further analyzation, I can determine

that these skills are reflected upon the Core Competencies I have chosen to showcase in my

portfolio. To be frank, I am not surprised at my results mirroring my career interests. I find the

results to be true to who I am as a person, as well as a leader and role-model to others. Not to say
I am not realistic, investigative, and artistic, I feel these qualities are reflected upon other

characteristics I carry within myself. I think that this assessment highlighted the inspiration and

drive I must help lead people and the organization I work for to achieving ultimate success in our

goals. Having also taken assessments in the past, sparks the fire of wondering if I truly know

thyself and thyself as worker to obtain an accurate set of results.

Section 4: Three Additional Self-Assessments

As I recall several self-assessments taken in prior courses, one course that obtained several

self-assessments was OGL 220: Behavioral Dynamics in Organizations. The first assessment I

took in this course was the Cultural Dimensions Self-Assessment, to further:

 Examine behavioral implications associated with your own cultural orientation.

 Assess the dominant characteristics of your personality and how personality influences

behavior.

What can you “take away” from this activity? How might you use this information in becoming

more effective at understanding behavioral dynamics?

My Answer:

I think that I can take away that with the billions of people on this planet, everyone has a

different set of standards on behavioral dynamics. While we all have been influenced by

different cultural dimensions and hold our own views, we are still able to look at others and use

that to better understand all the various dynamics implemented by behavior. This activity has

given a better insight on this subject.

I would take this information to be more resourceful in coming up with ways to use the modeled

behavior to influence positive social dynamics. With that being said, we can try to understand the

challenges of the present and future. We can try to understand the impulsiveness behind certain

desires, and what influences the ability to restrain from it. Bottom line, there are many outcomes

of using this information to become more effective at understanding behavioral dynamics.

The Second Self-Assessment taken in this course was the HumanMetrics Jung Typology

Test, a Personality Self-Assessment. This assessment allowed me to enrapture my

true personality while comparing my perceptive results to the perception of my friends,

colleagues, and family. What made me realize this assessment helped me, was knowing that I

truly had results to prove the match. Upon interpreting my results, the statement that stood out

the most was, "They want to both help and to be liked and admired by other people, on both an

individual and a humanitarian level." I have never read a statement that perfectly described who I

am and what I stand for as a member of a diverse world. I do feel it is accurate that I separate

who I am as an individual from my own humanitarian views. I try to find the best of both worlds

that leads to more compromise rather than having any conflicts arise.

Lastly the Kolb Learning Style Inventory Self-Assessment, is derived from an

experiential theory and model of learning developed by Kolb (1984) and based on the seminal

contributions of John Dewey, Kurt Lewin & Jean Piaget. It is a practical self-assessment

instrument that can help us gain deeper insight into our own preferred approach to learning – as

well as how others may think and process learning-related information differently. What I

learned most from this assessment was that by focusing on the nature of behavioral dynamics in

organizations, I might structure myself to gain strengths in all the categories of learning styles. I

would do this in hopes of being able to understand the reasoning behind these different
perspectives that the learning styles give off. Take the opposite learning style I am most

dominant in and see how I can adapt to a new learning style different than what I am usually

used to working for me. If I were to do this, then I would effectively be adapting myself to

change immediate circumstances. Discarding the plan or theory developed, I can learn that this

style of learning requires taking risks and acting, as you'll most likely throw away the original

theory of a plan. I would want to grow in other areas of learning styles and gain more insights to

the nature of dynamics that structure learning opportunities to my learning style.
