With a total land area of approximately 300,000 square kilometers, the population density of the
Philippines in 2020 posted at 363 persons per square kilometer. In that same year Mandaue City was
the most densely populated area in Central Visayas with a total population of 364,116. Mandaue City
has a total land area of 25.18 square kilometers, compute the population density of the city for the
year 2020. (Round off your answer to the nearest whole number)

Answer: 14,461 persons per square kilometer

Solution: Population Density

= population/land area
=364, 166/25.18 sq. km.

Fertility refers to the number of live births women have. It differs from fecundity which refers
to the physiological capability of women to reproduce. There are various ways to measure
fertility, one of which is the age-specific fertility rate or ASFR.

Compute the ASFR of those in the age group 20-24 and 25-29 given the following data.

Age of No. Of
No. Of births
Women Women
15 – 19 379,988 11,947

40 – 44 224,494 5,001
45 - 49 198,430 418

Answer: ASFR (20-24) 93 births, and 106.9 or 107 births for ASFR (25-29)

ASFR 20-24 = _33,721_ x 1,000 = 93 births

The age dependency ratio relates the number of individuals who are likely to be
“dependent” on the support of others for their daily living to the number of those
individuals who are capable of providing this support. This can be calculated for child
dependency or old-age dependency.

The 2015 Census of Population and Housing revealed that Bohol has a total
population of 1,313,560. When disaggregated into different age groups, those under
14 numbered 421,514, those from ages 15 – 64 numbered 793,325, and those 65
years old and above numbered 98,721. What is the old-age dependency ratio for
Bohol in 2015?
a) In 2015, there were approximately 19 old age dependents per 100 persons in the
working age group.
11
b) In 2015, there were approximately 12 old age dependents per 100 persons in the
