Safety

Introduction
The policy of Fastjet is to manufacture non-contact printing/coding systems and ink
supplies that meet high standards of performance and reliability. We enforce strict
quality control techniques to eliminate the potential for defects and hazards in our
products.

The intended use of the Fastjet F500 series printer is to print information directly
onto a product. Use of this equipment in any other fashion may lead to serious
personal injury.

The safety guidelines provided in this chapter are intended to educate the
technicians on all safety issues, so that the printer is serviced and operated in a safe
manner.

General Safety Guidelines

Always refer to the correct service manuals as per the specific fastjet printer
model.

Only fastjet - trained personnel must carry out installation and maintenance work.
Any such work undertaken by unauthorized personnel may damage the printer
and will invalidate the warranty.

To avoid damage to the printer components, use only soft brushes and lint free
cloths for cleaning. Do not use high pressure air, cotton waste, or abrasive
materials.

The printhead must be completely dry before attempting to start the printer,
otherwise the printhead may get damaged.

To prevent nozzle clogs, always wear rubber gloves whenever the nozzle tubing
manifold is to be disconnected from the printhead valve.

Electrical Safety Guidelines

This section explains the safety guidelines related to electrical power supply and
electrical cables.

Electrical Power Supply

WARNING

PERSONAL INJURY. Lethal voltages are present within this equipment

when it is connected to the mains electrical supply. Only trained and
authorised personnel must carry out the maintenance work.

Fastjet F500 Service Manual Page 3

WARNING
PERSONAL INJURY. Observe all statutory electrical safety codes
and practices. Unless it is necessary to run the printer, disconnect
the printer from the mains electrical supply before removing the
covers or attempting any service or repair activity. Non-adherence to
this warning can result in death or personal injury.

WARNING

PERSONAL INJURY. A high AC voltage is present at the inverter and

backlight. Extreme caution is required when diagnosing failure in
these areas.

Electrical Cables

WARNING
PERSONAL INJURY. Use only the mains power cable supplied with
the printer. The end of this cable must have an approved, three-pole,
mains plug that has a protective ground conductor.

The electrical power cables, sockets and plugs must be kept clean
and dry.

For pluggable equipment, the socket-outlet must be installed near

the equipment and must be easily accessible.

WARNING
PERSONAL INJURY. Always inspect the cables for damage, wear,
corrosion, and deterioration. Make all grounding/bonding connections
void of areas of paint, ink build-up, and corrosion.

Bonding and Grounding

interruption in the protective ground conductor or if the protective
ground conductor is disconnected. The failure to follow this warning
can cause an electrical shock.

Fastjet F500 Service Manual Page 4

WARNING

PERSONAL INJURY. Always ground conductive equipment to an

earthing electrode or to the building grounding system with approved
cables as per NEC standards in order to drain all potential static
discharge. For example, a metal service tray to earth ground.

WARNING

PERSONAL INJURY. A resistance reading from the grounded service

tray to the equipment chassis or mounting bracket should be 0 to
less than 1 ohm. A resistance check should be made using a safe
and reliable ohmmeter and should be done on a frequent basis

WARNING

PERSONAL INJURY. The PCBs contain static sensitive devices. A

suitably grounded, antistatic wrist strap must be worn when working
on or handling PCBs.

WARNING

PERSONAL INJURY. Always prevent static discharge from occurring.

Use proper Grounding and Bonding methods. Only use Fastjet
approved metallic service trays and ground cables.

WARNING

1.2.5 Valve 12
V12 - Return Valve. The Return valve mounted on the heater module block is
normally closed, only opening during purging, flushing of the nozzle and start up and
shutdown.

The Return valve when energized removes air from the feed and return pipework and
the nozzle when being purged. A vacuum is also applied through the return valve to
the nozzle during a nozzle flush

Printhead valve: C2.ZJ.0004A

1.2.6 Valve 11
V11 - Jet Valve. V11 when energized allows the flow of ink to the nozzle during

1.2.9 Crystal Transducer Socket

The crystal causes the nozzle assembly to vibrate longitudinally, breaking the ink flow
into droplets a short distance from the nozzle orifice (split point), which cannot be
formed if this cable is disconnected. The modulation frequency on the standard Si
printhead is 76.8 kHz.

1.2.13 Vertical Adjustment Screw

Use for adjustment of the ink jet position. For the adjustment method, refer to the
Operation Manual 4.5 Ink line adjustment.

1.2.14 Phase Detector

The phase detector senses the strength of the electrical charge applied to the ink
droplets and adjusts the charge pulse timing accordingly. Phase Detector of F530/
F550 is connect to the J7 on the mainboard directly. For F540/F560 it is connect to
the Phase Amplifier.

1.2.15 Charge Electrode

The charge electrode applies an electrical charge to each individual ink droplet. The
charge applied to the droplet is variable and affects the position of the droplet on the
substrate.

Charge Electrode connect to the CH/MOD socket on mainboard directly and its
shielded wire is the same ground as the mainboard.

Fastjet F500 Service Manual Page 17

1.2.16 Deflection Plate
After passing through the charge electrode the droplet stream passes through an
electrostatic field maintained by the deflector electrodes which are connected to a
high tension supply (typically 7 kV). The negatively charged droplets are deflected by
the field towards the high voltage deflector plate. The distance a drop is deflected is
proportional to the charge carried, which is in turn proportional to the voltage applied
to the charge electrode when the drop became detached from the ink jet.

1.2.17 Gutter Tube

The gutter is the return path for ink droplets which are not used for printing. The
gutter delivers the ink back to the ink system. The gutter detect senses when ink is
present in the gutter. The ink feed tubes are metallic and a signal is fed to one of
them. A signal return lead is connected to the other. When ink (which is conductive) is
present, the signal passes through it to the return lead. The gutter detect signal is
then fed, via the umbilical, to the mainboard in the electronics system.

1.3.10 Ink System Operation

Function

The functions of the ink system are as follows:

• Deliver ink to the nozzle at a constant pressure and temperature.

• Ensure sufficient ink and solvent are available.

• Ensure that the ink is kept at a viscosity value corresponding to the ink
temperature and the type of ink in use.

• Generate a vacuum for gutter suction

Operation

The pump draws ink from the mixer tank and circulates it round a system
divided into several paths. After circulation the unused ink is returned to the
mixer tank.

Circulation ensures that the ink remains thoroughly mixed and any addition of
ink or solvent will be rapidly mixed in.

Filtered ink is fed from the pump to three sub-systems:

• The VMS.

• The printhead nozzle.

• The venturi and gutter pump, which creates a vacuum to the nozzle or the
gutter to perform the following operations:

a. To remove debris from the nozzle during flushing.

b. To draw solvent through the umbilical tubes (thus cleaning them)

during shut down.

c. To collect non-deflected ink droplets, via the gutter, when printing.

d. The returned ink or solvent is fed back to the mixer tank via a baffle to
reduce frothing.

Fastjet F500 Service Manual Page 32

1.3.11 Viscosity Monitoring System Sequence
The viscosity of the ink is checked by the Viscosity Monitoring System (VMS)
whenever the jet is running.

This procedure is as follows:

1. Solenoid valve V3 opens directing ink into the VMS chamber(Item 3 on page 19
and 20), which is an integral part of the Mixer Tank.

2. Ink flows into the VMS chamber via V3 and restrictor until the high level sensor
is detected. At this point V3 closes, stopping the flow of ink into the chamber.

3. The ink flows out of the chamber through a large restrictor into the mixer tank
until the low level sensor is undetected. The Mainboard measures the time that
this takes. V3 energizes and the chamber starts to fill again.

4. The time taken for the ink to run out of the chamber is dependent on its
viscosity; the thicker the ink, the longer it will take to drain. The viscosity of the
ink is affected by makeup loss during normal machine operation as well as by its
temperature, which is monitored by a sensor beside the pressure transducer.

5. The Mainboard compares the time taken for the ink to drain against a value
calculated by the software. The software takes into account the type of ink (i.e.
B600 selected by default) and its temperature.

6. If the ink is too thick (i.e. the time to drain is longer than the calculated value)
solenoid valve V1 opens. The pump draws solvent from the top up reservoir,
adding it in small doses to the mixer tank every 2nd VMS cycle until the viscosity
is correct .

7. The viscosity monitoring sequence is repeated each time that the low level
sensor in the VMS chamber is undetected.

Note: Ink is only added to the mixer tank when the tank level is below the OK
level sensor.

1.3.12 Start Jet
• The default program for the F530/F550 when the "START/STOP" button is
pressed is "QUICK START" and the "CLEAN START" program will only run if
a Gutter Fault is detected during startup.

• The default program for the F540/F560 when the "START/STOP" button is
pressed is “Clean Start".

1.3.13 Stop Jet

• When the printer is running and the actual ink viscosity is not 5 points or
more below the target viscosity, the default program when the "START/
STOP" button is pressed is "Clean Shutdown".

1.3.14 Quick Stop

• This method switches off the ink without flushing the nozzle or manifold.
Hence the manifold and the nozzle are full of ink when the jet stops. The
machine must not be left in this state for long periods, as drying ink in the jet
orifice may make restarting difficult.

• This procedure is primarily intended for situations where the machine may be
stopped and restarted several times in quick succession. Under these
conditions, the use of solvent may become excessive and cause dilution of
the ink.

Note: This sequence is used to manually stop the jet for a short period, or to
automatically stop the jet during charge error and gutter error.

1.3.15 Nozzle Flush

1. When Flush Nozzle is selected, the vacuum from the Venturi or Gutter
pump is applied to the return side of the nozzle, creating suction at the
nozzle orifice. Solvent is applied to the nozzle orifice to clear any blockage.

2. Nozzle flush will automatically time out after 2 minutes but can be stopped
at any time before that by pressing F1 Stop Flush.

3. A nozzle flush can be started with the jet running or stopped. If the jet is
running, selecting Flush Nozzle will first of all de-energize feed valve V6 to
stop the flow of ink to the nozzle.

a. The printer operates normally and the ink viscosity is too high (the
viscosity SET value is less than the NOW value).

b. Conductive makeup in cartridge and percentage greater than 0% and

No "mix tank full" alarm.

2. The flow of makeup from the cartridge into the measuring cup:

a. V1, V5 are energized and addition pump turns on, the vacuum
generated by the addition pump connects the measuring cup.

b. The ink in the cartridge flows into the measuring cup until the level is
detected as OK, then V1 and V5 will de-energized. If the measuring
cup cannot be filled within 30s, the system will display Makeup
cartridge is empty(0%).

c. If the time to fill the measuring cup is less than 4 seconds (less than 4
seconds means that the measuring cup was not properly emptied the
last time and there is residual makeup causing the draw out time to be
too fast), the system will pop up the "Solvent Draw Error” window.

3. The flow of makeup from the measuring cup into the Mixer tank:

a. When the measuring cup is full, V4 will be energized.

b. The makeup in the measuring cup will flow into the mixer tank through
the vacuum generated by the Addition Pump until the measuring cup
is empty. V4 will de-energized and at this point, about 20cc makeup
has been added to the mixer tank.

c. The makeup percentage on the screen drops. If the measuring cup

cannot be emptied, the system will pop up the “Solvent Draw Error”
window.

1.3.27 Pressure Buffer
To reduce ink buildup within the printhead, it is important to maintain a very stable
breakup, which can be improved by stabilizing the system pressure.

The pressure damper is designed to absorb pressure fluctuations.

The damper is located on the right side of the lower cabinet, behind the cartridge
slots.

F500 Pressure Bu er Part No.: Y2.BJ.FE0011A

1.3.28 Main Filter

The primary purpose of the main filter is to provide filtered ink to the nozzle for
printing, to the VMS and to the Venturi, universal for F530/F550/F540/F560 series.

This main filter has three filters inside.

• The first layer of filtration is 5 micron and it filters all the ink.

• The second layer is 30 micron and it filters the ink to the Venturi only.

• The third layer is 5 micron and it filters the ink to the nozzle and ink to the VMS
tank.

F500 Main Filter Part No.: C2.ZJ.0012A

1.3.29 Gutter Pump/Addition Pump

Due to functional differences, this part is named "Gutter Pump" on the F550,
“Addition Pump" on the F540/F560, not available on the F530.

1.3.30 Flushing Pump
The flushing pump is a simple diaphragm type pump consisting of two injection
moulded pump housings, a flexible diaphragm, two check valves and housings.

A flange of the diaphragm (the diaphragm is located in a cavity in one the two
housings) acts as a sealing gasket when the two housings are bolted together. The
housing containing the diaphragm cavity also has an ink connection which allows
either ink under pressure or vacuum to move the diaphragm backwards and
forwards.

And it contains 2 non-return valves:

• The In Port only allows flow into the pump and is connected to a pipe, which
draws flushing solvent from the solvent level. The solvent level can be check in
the diagnosis screen

• The Out Port only allows flow out of the pump and is connected to a pipe that
feeds the flush solvent to the manifold in the printhead.

During operation, the diaphragm is controlled by V7.

When vacuum (generated by the suction of the gear pump) is applied to the
diaphragm, flush solvent is drawn from the solvent level and into the pump cavity to
prime the pump.

During “clean stop” cycle, pressure is applied to the diaphragm through the switching
of V7. The In Port seals close, forcing flushing solvent through the Out Port to the
printhead and through V11.

Universal for F530/F550/F540/F560 series.

1.3.31 Solenoid Valves
The flow of ink in the ink system is controlled by ten solenoid operated spool valves.
Except for valves V11 and V12, the valves are all of the same design.

The valves are single-acting, operated by an electrical solenoid with spring return.
The flow is from the common port [3] to the normally open port [1] when the valve is
not energized (off). When energized (on) the flow is from the common port to the
normally closed port [2].

Valves V11 and V12 are miniature shut-off valves and are mounted on the heater
block within the printhead.

3.1 Read the Operator Manual
The F500 Series User Manual contains the troubleshooting procedures that an
operator is allowed to perform. Refer to the operator manual for these procedures.

This chapter contains the troubleshooting procedures that only trained personnel or a
service technician is allowed to perform.

3.2 Important Guidelines

Before you perform fault diagnosis or do any repairs described in this section, fastjet
recommends to shift the printer from the production line to a clean environment.

• When a fault condition occurs, the first step to locate the cause must be to check
the following:

• The status LEDs on the mainboard.

• Warning and faulty list the possible printer status icons. These tables contain either
remedial action or a reference to more detailed fault finding information.

• When you need to replace a part , refer to the related replacement instructions or
videos

34 - 15 - - - - 11 9 8 7 6 5 5 4 4 4 3

Example of dot interval

Notes:

1. Speed Unit is meter per minutes.

2. High speed mode only supports 9, 12, 16, 25 dots, and 25 dots only support three
lines of 7x5 font message layout.

3. The F530/540 series does not support high speed mode. 6, 13, 20, 27 dots for
printing 6x5 fonts and for F560 series only.

4. HQ1 to HQ15 means High Quality Mode 1 to 15.

5. Character print width depends on actual line speed (Without an encoder).

6. For example, 16 dots printing (2 lines printing, 7x5 font), if the dot interval required
to be printed is 0.2mm (the width of each characters is about 1.2mm include the
gap between each characters) , the speed ratio is 0.2 / 0.417 = 0.48, so the normal
speed is 60 x 0.48 = 28.8m/min, the speed under high speed mode is 90 x 0.48 =
43.2 m/min
