Question 1: Explain the purpose and the functions of HRM, applicable to


workforce planning and resourcing the chosen organization of your
choice.

INTRODUCTION;
Human resource management is the process of effectively managing the workforce of
an organization so that goals would be achieved in a given time frame. This process comprises
of several functions such as training, recruitment, motivation etc. of the workforce to enhance
their efficiency. The main function of HRM is to recruit the best possible candidate for the
organization to enhance growth and success of the organization.
Chosen organization for this assignment is . ASDA stores ltd. is a UK based
supermarket chain. Founded in 1949 by Peter and Fred Asquith at West Yorkshire, England.
ASDA has a total of 632 (as of 31 January 2021) each averaging around 44000 sq/ft with
some as large as 100,000 sq/ft. In 1999, it was acquired by Wal-Mart stores Inc.

• Role of HRM in Workforce Planning:


1. To maintain high morale of employees
within ASDA: In ASDA the major role of HR
managers in to motivate their workforce to
give their level best performance, in order to
achieve this, they provide several incentives
and rewards to them on basis of performance
level. As result of this the workers not only
gain confidence and but the company is able
to retain highly efficient/ skilled workforce for
a long period of time thus reducing labor
turnover.
2. To maintain adequate manpower: Another
important job that the HR managers perform
at ASDA is that they analyze the current and
future trend for the require of manpower. This
helps to maintain a steady supply of
employees at the right place at the right time
which prevents storage of employees which
could adversely the business.
3. Proper utilization of manpower: Proper HR
planning assures that employees at ASDA are
deployed in a proper and effective manner.

• Functions of HRM in achieving ASDA objectives:


The main objective of ASDA is
to gain the trust of their
employees and customers toward
the organization product and
services. This is only possible if
the companies HRM functions are
put in action efficiently. These
functions are:
1. Employee retention: This
function is really important to
achieve the trust between the
employer and employee. This
relationship is strengthened
by monitoring job satisfaction,
workplace environment,
employee to employee
relationship. Strong working
relation within ASDA allows
employees to enjoy a safe
working environment which
ultimately leads to ASDA’s
goal achievement.
2. Training & Development:
Employees are required to
have proper training so that
they get their job done in the
right manner and time. At
ASDA latest training tools
and methods are
incorporated to train the
employees and bring the best
out of them. Whenever an
employee is hired at ASDA,
he/she goes through
induction training to make
them familiar with the
workings of the organization.
Training is the best
investment done by ASDA to
increase their rate of returns.
ASDA not only provides initial
training but also focuses and
promotes training sessions
throughout the employee’s
career at ASDA to not only
polish their skills but also to
increase efficiency.
3. Recruitment: This is the
most important function at

industry there the right
person is needed for the job.
This function is performed by
the HR managers who search
and appoint the right
candidate at the right place.
ASDA recruits’ employees
through online application
system. HR department goes
through the resumes and
filter out the eligible
candidates. These
candidates are then called in
for interview where not only
their educational but people
skills ae also taken into
account.
4. Goal harmony: HRM acts as
a link between the individual
and organizational goals. At
ASDA the management
always sets goals with
corelate with the goals of HR.
5. Employee satisfaction: At
ASDA the HR Department
provides lots of opportunities
to develop the career of their
employees. A satisfied
employee means that they
would work ate their full
potential.

Conclusion:
For companies like ASDA which fall in the service sector HRM is a crucial aspect. As
ASDA is a supermarket for them workforce is the backbone of there success, without a proper
skillful workforce the company would crash. People with the right knowledge, skills &
behavioral attributes would be able to satisfy the needs of their customers. For example, if an
employee is short tempered, he or she may end up in an argument with the client which could
have adverse effect on the company’s public image.

Question 2: Explain the strengths and weaknesses of different


approaches to recruitment and selection for the chosen organization.

INTRODUCTION;
Recruitment and Selection plays a key role in the development of the organization. To
get the highest rate of returns ASDA must select the right candidate. This is a quantifiable
measurement that can be assessed against the benchmarks and encourage actions mainly
focused on client experience and candidate quality. ASDA is well aware of the fact that to
sustain in this competitive business environment where it has big giants like TESCO to
compete with it must select the best candidate for a given position.
ASDA’s recruitment and selection are quite different as compared to its competitors
like TESCO and Pick n Pay. ASDA has an online application system where can applicants
submit their resume and give a short test which analyzes their critical thinking skills. The step-
by-step approach for applying at ASDA is as followed:
1. Open Recruitment portal
2. Register yourself
3. Fill in personal information
4. Select the position you want to apply
5. List down your educational background and skills
6. Upload your relevant documents
7. And upload
8. You will be given a reference ID and if application is accepted you will be contacted
through the given number or email

Strengths & Weaknesses:


This method is helpful for ASDA as it collects all the applications online which are then
sent to the assessment center also known as ‘ASDA Magic’ where HR mangers go through
the applications and filter out the below average candidates. The selected ones are then called
in for interview where the HR managers test their skills and knowledge, and also their people
skills. Those who pass all the stages are then hired. This method also has a drawback and
that is majority of the candidates are filter out just on the basis of the online application. In
2018, an independent survey was done which showed almost 30% of the rejected applicants
were as good as the ones hired. Out of these rejected ones 60% were hired by the competitors
which shows that this method of recruiting is not at all efficient. Another drawback is that
competitor like TESCO does walk in interviews as a result the candidate gets a swift yes or
no unlike in case of ASDA candidate may have to wait up to 2 weeks for a response. As a
result, candidates are unable to apply elsewhere in fear that in the meantime if they apply
somewhere else, they might lose this opportunity.

Conclusion:
After assessing the strengths and weaknesses of ASDA’s recruitment and selection
process we can come to this conclusion that although there are many drawbacks but this
online application method has been proved to be effective as ASDA’s has been successful in
hiring and retaining one of the best workforce in the supermarket industry.
