Geometric Series

A geometric series is the indicated sum of the terms of a

finite geometric sequence.

The sum 𝑠𝑛 of the first n terms of a finite geometric

series having a common ratio r≠ 1 is designated by:

𝑛
1−𝑟
𝑠𝑛 = 𝑎1
1−𝑟
Geometric Series

A geometric series is the indicated sum of the terms of a

finite geometric sequence.

The sum 𝑠𝑛 of the first n terms of a finite geometric

series having a common ratio r≠ 1 is designated by:

𝟏−𝒓𝒏 𝒂𝟏 −𝒂𝟏 𝒓𝒏
𝒔𝒏 = 𝒂𝟏 or 𝒔𝒏 =
𝟏−𝒓 𝟏−𝒓
Geometric Series
𝟏−𝒓𝒏 𝒂𝟏 −𝒂𝟏 𝒓𝒏
𝒔𝒏 = 𝒂𝟏 or 𝒔𝒏 =
𝟏−𝒓 𝟏−𝒓

Example: 1. Find the sum of the first 7 terms of the

finite geometric series 4, 8, 12, …
Given: 𝑎1 = 4 𝑎2 = 8 𝑎3 = 16 n = 7
Solutions: Solve for the common ratio: 𝑎2 /𝑎1 = 8/4 = 2
The common ratio is 2.
Geometric Series
𝟏−𝒓𝒏 𝒂𝟏 −𝒂𝟏 𝒓𝒏
𝒔𝒏 = 𝒂𝟏 or 𝒔𝒏 =
𝟏−𝒓 𝟏−𝒓

Substitute the values in the formula for a finite

geometric series, we shall have:
𝒏 −𝟏𝟐𝟕
Given: 𝒔𝒏 = 𝒂𝟏
𝟏−𝒓
𝒔𝟕 = 𝟒
𝑎1 = 4 𝟏−𝒓 −𝟏
𝟕
𝟏−𝟐 𝒔𝟕 = 𝟒 𝟏𝟐𝟕
𝑎2 = 8 𝒔𝟕 = 𝟒
𝑎3 = 16 𝟏 − 𝟐 𝒔𝟕 = 𝟓𝟎𝟖
n=7 𝟏 − 𝟏𝟐𝟖 Therefore, the sum of the
𝒔𝟕 = 𝟒 first 7 terms of the
r=2 −𝟏 Geometric Series is 508.
Geometric Series
𝟏−𝒓𝒏 𝒂𝟏 −𝒂𝟏 𝒓𝒏
𝒔𝒏 = 𝒂𝟏 or 𝒔𝒏 =
𝟏−𝒓 𝟏−𝒓

𝟏−𝒓
𝑎1 = 4 𝟏−𝟑 𝒏 𝟑𝒏

r=3 𝟏, 𝟎𝟗𝟑 = 𝟏
𝟏−𝟑 n=7
Sn = 1,093 1 - 𝟑𝒏 = 1, 093 (-2) Thus, when Sn = 1,093,
