Geometric Sequence
A geometric sequence is a type of sequence in which each subsequent term after the first term is
determined by multiplying the previous term by a constant (not 1), which is referred to as the
common ratio. The following is a geometric sequence in which each subsequent term is
multiplied by 2:
Determine if the sequence is arithmetic or geometric, and then find the next
three terms.
1. -2, -4, -8, -16, ___, ___, ___ 2. 65, 60, 55, 50, 45, ___, ___, ___
3. 8, 13, 18, 23, 28, ___, ___, ___ 4. 1, 1.5, 2.25, 3.375, ___, ___, ___
where r cannot be equal to 1, and the first term of the sequence, a, scales the sequence. If r is
equal to 1, the sequence is a constant sequence, not a geometric sequence.
To determine the nth term of the sequence, the following formula can be used:
an = arn-1
where an is the nth term in the sequence, r is the common ratio, and a is the value of the first term.
Example: Find the 8th term in the following sequence: 96, 48, 24, 12, 6, …
To find the common ratio, divide each term by the one before it.

48 96 , 24 48 1 , 12 24 1 The common ratio is 1

Practice:
1. Find the next three terms: 128, 64, 32, 16, 8, _____, _____, _____ .
Determine if the sequence is arithmetic or geometric, and then find the given
term.
7. Mariano received a bonus of $50 for working the day after Thanksgiving,
plus his regular wage of $9.45 an hour. If his total wages for the day were
$135.05, how many hours did he work?
8. Heather makes $6.50 per hour. Every three months, she is eligible for a 2%
raise. How much will she make after 2 years if she gets a raise every time
she is eligible?

This will help you determine if solving the sum of a given
infinite geometric sequence is possible.
Example 1:
Solve for r 𝑟 = = = 1 5 since ׀r ׀is less than 1, the series converges so
the sum of this sequence can be determined
Example 2:
Solve for r 𝑟 = = = 3 since ׀r ׀is greater than 1, the series diverges so the
sum of this sequence cannot be determined

the sum exists or not.
