Detailed Lesson Plan in Broiler Production

Prepared by: Jhon Mar D Montuno

I. Objectives
At the end of the lesson the students will be able to:
1. Identify the importance and purpose of Broiler housing and facilities
2. Demonstrate the factors to consider in selecting a site for Poultry.
3. Appreciate the process of Broiler production.

II. Subject Matter

 Topic: Broiler housing and facilities.
 References: Escador, Norita C., et al. Basic Poultry Keeping Manual

al.,
 Materials: PowerPoint presentation, Laptop

III. Procedure
1. PREPARATION

Teacher’s Activity Student’s Response

A. Prayer  (One students will lead the prayer)

(“Lets pray first. Anyone please
lead the prayer.”)

B. Daily Attendance  (The secretary of the class will check

(Call the Secretary to check the the attendance)
attendance)

C. Recapitulation
(“So, Last meeting we talked about
different breeds of swine”). So
again, what are the different breeds  (Students will share their understanding
of swine? on the previous lesson.)
Okay very good class! It seems that
you really understand our topic last
time”)
D. Motivation
(“To give you a hint on our lesson  (Students will raise their hands to
for today, let’s have our ice breaker participate)
first.”)

RIDDLE.
(“The first student who will give
the correct answer will have
additional point in recitation.”)

 I have a little house in which I live all

Alone It has no doors or windows And
if I want to go out I must
breakthrough The wall what am I?
Find who am I?

Answer.
 EGG

E. Unlocking of difficulties
(“Before we proceed with our
lesson, what comes into your mind
when you hear the word
‘BROILER’?  (Students will give their own insights
Okay so let’s define first some of about the word ‘BROILER’)
the words that we will encounter
throughout the discussion.”)

 Broiler- Is any chicken (Gallus

gallus domesticus) that is bred and
raised specifically for meat
production.
 Biosecurity- A holistic approach
that prevents or control the
introduction & spread of pathogens
into and between the flocks.
 Poultry houses- provided shelter
for poultry (overwhelmingly
chickens, but sometimes turkeys or
ducks) intended for egg laying (the
vast majority in our period) or meat
production.
 Animal Healthcare- Caring for the
health of animals is a big industry.
 Agricultural zone- A property
which is zoned for agriculture
(designated as A-1) means that
agriculture is allowed in that
property.
 Topography- The physical features
of the land surface, whether it is
rolling or sloping, flat or level.

2. LESSON PROPER

Teacher’s Activity Student’s Response

 Discussion  (Students will listen and take important

(“Today, we will discuss about the notes about the topic)
Broiler housing and facilities”)

 There are two types of poultry

housing: caged house operations,
where birds are housed in cages
for egg production, and floor
housed operations, where bird are
housed on the floor for meat
production.

 Importance of poultry housing and

facilities: It protects the birds from
the harsh environmental climatic
conditions, which may have
adverse effect on the chickens
performance and productivity.

 Qualities of good housing: 1)

Poultry house should be located
away from residential and  (Students will read the presentation)
industrial area. 2) It should have
proper road facilities. 3) It should
have the basic amenities like water
and electricity. 4) Availability of
farm labourers at relatively
cheaper wages. 5) Poultry house
should be located in an elevated
area and there should not be any
water-logging. 6) It should have
proper ventilation. 7) Layout
should not allow visitors or
outside vehicles near the sheds. 8)
The disposal pit and sick room
should be constructed only at the
end of the site.

 Floor space requirements for

Broiler: The ideal floor space
requirement per broiler chicken is
1-2 sqft (0.09-0.18 sqm), 1.5 sqft
(0.14 sqm) on average. However,
going as high as 2.5 sqft/bird (0.23
sqm/bird) is not bad, especially
during the very hot seasons.

 Positioning of poultry house:

Avoid low-lying areas near
streams with flooding potential.
Preferably, the topography will
allow the long axis of the poultry
house to be located in an east-west
direction. This helps to minimize
the amount of direct sunlight that
would enter through the sidewalls
of the houses.

 Brooding occurs during the initial

14 days of a broiler chicken's life
or until the chicks are feathered
and able to maintain body
temperature. Frequent monitoring
by producers enables quick
identification and correction of
problems, as well as documenting
good, consistent growing
conditions.

Types of cage

 Battery type- The battery

cages help poultry farmers
to minimize feed. It is easy
to minimize feed spillage
with battery cages because
they are designed with
standards accessories for
holding food and water,
especially the amount
required for feeding the
chickens daily. This
disallows any form of feed
spillage and wastage.

 Litter type- Advantages

of deep litter system in
poultry management
include: It increases
efficiency in poultry
management, facilitates the
management of every large
flock, maximizes use of
land, increases rate of
growth/production,
maximizes use of labour,
reduces loss of eggs to
vermin’s, snake and
thieves, protect birds.

5 types of broiler feeders:

o Automatic chicken feeder

o Rectangular wooden
feeder
o Metallic feeder
o Tray feeder
o Round feeder

Types of poultry waterers

 Gravity traditional fill

waterer (on ground or
hanging)
 Nipple waterer
 Chicken cup waterer
 Winter chicken waterer

IV. Generalization

Teacher’s Activity Student’s Response

 Summary of the discussion (“okay  (Students will listen)

class, to reiterate there are two
types of cages: The battery type
cages and litter type cages. The
feeders have 5 types: Automatic
chicken feeder, Rectangular
wooden feeder, metallic feeder,
tray feeder and round feeder. The
waterers also have common types
just like nipple, gravity traditional
fill waterer and chicken cup
waterer. Also, we have discussed
the factors to consider in selecting a
site for a Broiler production such as
topography, prevailing wind
direction, access to roads, access to
electric power, access to water,
drainage, and so on. We’ve
discussed also the space
requirement for broiler and
brooding facilities: 1sqft= 1 broiler
and 1watt= 1 chicks.)

 Check if they understanding the  (Students will say “Yes, Sir!”)

discussion of the topic (“Did you
understand the broiler housing and
facilities ?”)

 Provide some follow-up questions

to test their understandability of the  (Students will give answer on the
topic (“so again, what are the 2 follow-up question”)
different types of cages? How
about the space requirement
broiler? Okay very good! It seems
that you are listening attentively to
our discussion”)
V. Application

Teacher’s Activity Students Response

 Performance task  ( Students will group their selves and

(“Create 5 groups, you are free to present their short reporting next
choose your own group mates and meeting)
make a short discussion on proper
selection of a site in housing a
Broiler’s House using the factors
that we have discussed”)

VI. Evaluation
I. Direction: Identify what is being asked. Write the CAPITAL LETTER of the correct
answer before the number.

__________________1. It occurs during the initial 14 days of a broiler chicken’s life

or until the chicks are feathered and able to maintain body temperature.
__________________2. This cage help poultry farmers to minimize feed.
__________________3. They are specifically bred for optimal health and size to
produce a quality product for the consumer and they are raised for meat.
_________________4. Type of cage that helps increases efficiency in poultry
management, facilitates the management of every large flock maximizes use of land,
increases rate of growth/production and etc.
_________________5. Space requirement for Broiler.
II.
TRUE OR FALSE. Write T if the statement is FALSE and F if the statement is
TRUE.

_________________1. Broilers are raised specifically for meat.

_________________2. Layers are raised for egg production.
_________________3. It is important to get a municipal permit after constructing the
building.
_________________4. The space requirement for each Broiler is 1sqft.
_________________5. The front side of the building should be facing EAST and the
rear side should be facing WEST. This would prevent the animals from too much
expose to sunlight.
