INTRODUCTION

A balanced approach is a decision-making approach through which a teacher makes


thoughtful decisions each day about the best way to help each child become a better
reader and writer. A balanced approach requires and enables a teacher to reflect on what
he or she is doing and to modify instruction daily, based on the needs of each individual
learner. The modifications are drawn from a broad repertoire of strategies and sound
understanding of children, learning and the theoretical underpinnings of these strategies.
You will be required to draw on your research about the balanced approach and write an
essay explaining this approach and create workstations based on the components of
reading.

DESCRIPTION

For this assignment you will be required to investigate and write an essay about the
balanced approach to reading and video record workstation activities that you have
created. These two elements will be submitted in two separate parts on the LMS. Further
details regarding each part can be found below.

Part A (50 marks)

INSTRUCTIONS

1. Conduct research about the balanced approach using a variety of credible sources.
2. Your research should be presented in an essay of 600 to 800 words.
3. Commence your essay with an appropriate introduction, structure paragraphs
logically and end with a suitable conclusion.
4. Introduce your essay by stating the essence of this essay together with the resources
you have consulted. In the second paragraph define the balanced approach to
reading and discuss the benefits thereof, drawing on your research of this approach.
5. Discuss the five main components of reading as stated in the Curriculum Assessment
Policy Statement (CAPS), page 14. Explain how you would incorporate each of these
components during a Grade 2 reading lesson of the text below. You have to make use
of the text "The Clean Park".
6. Use examples from your teaching practice experiences and information from the
learning content of this module to substantiate your discussion.
7. Remember to include a reference list of at least three references which include at
least one textbook (our textbook may be used), one journal article (hint: use
EBSCOHOST to find an article), and one website. Ensure that you reference according
to the latest STADIO Referencing Guide. Check that you have correctly implemented
your in-text referencing.
8. Read through your assignment and check that your grammar, language, and
academic tone are appropriate and ensure that you write in logical paragraphs.
9. Use the assignment rubric to guide you.

FORMAT

Your investigation should be presented in the form of an essay of 600 to 800 words and
must include in-text referencing and a reference list. Make use of the STADIO referencing
guide.

TECHNICAL REQUIREMENTS

You can submit in either a Word Document or a PDF and it must be submitted through
Turnitin on the LMS. You must ensure that you receive a similarity percentage for your
essay to be marked.

Part B (50 marks)

INSTRUCTIONS

1. Design and create five workstation activities for a class of 30 learners (6 learners per
group) and specify the grade.
2. Activities should focus on the five main components of reading (CAPS document,
page 14) in an English Home Language classroom.
3. You must physically set up your 5 workstations and take a video thereof.
4. You can either use ready-made resources or make your own from everyday items /
objects.
5. If you make use of ready-made worksheets from the Internet, you must reference
them.

TECHNICAL REQUIREMENTS

1. You are required to have someone recording you in this video to ensure your hands
are free and your face is clearly visible while explaining each of the workstations.
2. Start off your video by introducing yourself while holding up your student card / ID /
Driver's License. Ensure that the chosen identification and your face are clearly
visible.
3. Proceed by explaining the grouping strategy and time allocation for your workstation
activities.
4. Provide a verbal detailed description of how you would implement the activity at each
workstation.
5. Your video should not exceed 5 minutes (1 minute per station).
