SJCC Students’ Council Report 2021-2022

INDEPENDENCE DAY CELEBRATION

“Freedom in our mind, faith in the words, pride in our hearts and memories in our
souls…Let us salute our nation on this Independence Day.”
National festivals play an important role in planting the seed of nationalism and
patriotism among the people of our nation. Celebration of these festivals
commemorates the sacrifices of our freedom fighters who laid down their lives in the
foundation of our country.
The 75th Independence Day Celebration was held on the 15th of August on
Microsoft Teams, the Chief guest for this occasion was Major General Paul Deepak
Naidu. Our principal, Rev. Dr. Charles Lasrado SJ hoisted the national flag followed
by which the national anthem was played in honour of our country. Our students put
up stellar musical performances in the spirit of this proud occasion. A tribute video to
our Olympians who recently won the gold medal at Toyoko Olympics 2021 was
played during celebration. The celebration ended with a vote of thanks by our
student Governor Dr. Preemal Maria D’Souza.
INVESTITURE CEREMONY

The 19th of August, 2021 was an auspicious occasion at St. Joseph’s College of
Commerce, the investiture ceremony of the office bearers took place. These office
bearers consisted of the Student Council, Department Coordinators, Association
Heads and Class Representatives. The dignitaries for this grand occasion were
Chief Guest Mr. Salil Shetty Former Secretary General of Amnesty International,
Principal, Rev. Dr. Charles Lasrado SJ, Vice Principals Ms. Sneha Rai and Dr.
Rjajeba Singh, Registrar Dr. Augustin Amaladas, Finance Officer Rev Fr. Pradeep SJ
and Student Governor Dr. Preemal Maria D’Souza .The event started on a solemn
note with a prayer song followed by which the dignitaries were called upon stage for
the symbolic lighting of the lamp, with this the ceremony was declared open. Soon
after, the Indian Classical dance team presented to the crowd a short welcome
performance and left the crowd in awe with their synchronised symphonies!
After these proceedings were complete, Dr. Preemal Maria D’Souza the Student
Governor greeted the crowed with a heart-warming welcome speech. The dignitaries
for the day then moved onto the stage, each one of them gave touching speeches
and congratulated the newly formed body of student leaders. The Chief Guest Finally
came onto the dais and through his speech, encouraged the students to ensure that
they make the most of the leaders in them to make the outside world a better place.
The ritual of handing over of the college flag then took place, the principal handed
the flag over to the newly elected president who then passed it on to the council
members, the college anthem was then sung by the choir and all present
to convey our respect to the alma mater. The student leaders were then presented
with their badges and this embarked a moment of pride and joy for them as well as
all their well-wishers present in the audience.
The councils of various other institutes like CMS and MCC were also present for the
ceremony and they all shared a few words of good faith and congratulated the
council for the academic year ahead of them. Along with this, the previous councils
from the batch of 2020-2021 were also present, they offered words of advice and
wisdom to the elected council members through their experiences and wished them
the best of luck.
To conclude the event, the president, Mr. Anthony Rithvik delivered the vote of
thanks in appreciation of all those who helped in making the elections and investiture
ceremony such a huge success. The programme went on well and will definitely be
one that will be remembered by many.

TEACHERS DAY CELEBRATION

The student Council in collaboration with the BCOM AND BBA Departments
organized a special program for the teachers on the 4th of September 2021 in the
Loyola Hall. A day dedicated to all the dear teachers of SJCC who have played an
integral role in shaping every Josephites future. The cultural team of SJCC
presented a fun, engaging and thrilling performance which was definitely enjoyed by
the teachers. The programme ended with cake cutting ceremony after which snacks
were distributed among all. The principal and faculty members were overwhelmed by
the effort and love shown by the students.

FRESHERS DAY CELEBRATION

To give the incoming batch a platform to express themselves and interact with one
another, the Student Council organized fresher’s day on campus titled
“HOMECOMING” a two-day extravaganza for the new batch of Josephites. The
student council accommodated 800 students on campus by conducting activities
simultaneously in Loyola and Xavier Hall and also made sure that the Covid
Protocols were followed. The celebration began with the lighting of the lamp
ceremony by our Principal, Vice Principal, Student Governor and The President. It
was followed by a speech from our principal and student governor who welcomed
the students on campus after a yearlong of Online classes.

The informal section of our program began, the cultural teams of SJCC put up a
spectacular performance that was much loved and appreciated by our students. The
emcees for the day created an atmosphere, filled with laughter and fun with the aim
of showing the new batch of student’s what life on campus is like. Events like 60
seconds to fame, Clash of Classes and Mr and Ms Fresher was conducted for
students to come together and interact with each other, making new friends in the
process.
LEADERSHIP CAMP

Every year, the newly elected office bearers begin their year as student leaders at
the Annual Leadership Camp. This year the camp was organized Online on the 31th
of August 2021, and the speaker for the occasion was Dr. Caren Rodrigues,
Professor at St. Josephs Institute of Management. She provided the newly elected
representatives with useful knowledge on how to be an effective leader among peers
and a few tips on balancing different aspects of student life.
The Student Council also Initiated an offline leadership camp for all the Student
Leaders of our college. The speaker for this session was Mr. Roger Joseph Lurshay,
Senior HR Professional at Oracle. the main focus being to help students to become
effective leaders. Various team building activities and games were conducted to help
students to gain personal insights on leadership and network with other students.
CIPHER 2021, Break The Enigma

Cipher is more than just a fest- It is learning redefined.

With the aim to unearth learning, experience and talent, the days September 30th
and October 1st left a mark on our academic calendar as two gruesome, yet
extremely rewarding ones. It was one such fest that was infused with mind gripping
rounds, dynamic circumstances, ever-growing perspectives and a solution-centric
orientation.
The theme this year was 'Break the Enigma', which was not just about being able to
course through the challenging rounds, but rather, about one’s ability to break
through their own limits to push towards something bigger.
We’re also proud to have introduced the overall trophy this year which has been
presented to the class that battled it out and won the most number of events.
This year, Cipher comprised 7 events: Best Manager, Marketing, Public Relations,
Human Resources, Finance, Entrepreneurship Development and Business Quiz.
CADENZA, A CREATIVE MUSIC WORKSHOP

A Student Council initiative, The Western Acoustic Team, in collaboration with SJCC alumnus,
Raymond Phillip, conducted a creative music workshop on 12th February 2021 at Xavier Hall.
The workshop was attended by 32 jovial students keen to learn more about what goes on
behind the scenes during festing season – from the technical know-hows of creating a set, all
the way to what a team should expect from their experience partaking in a fest. The guest
speaker made a festing chart- a step by step breakdown of the process of creating a musical
set - for the attendees and distributed it among them, following which he demonstrated a set
he created on the spot and went on to teach the attendees the dos and don’ts of the process.
The workshop ended on a good note, with a short Q&A session to wrap the session up.

Council Social Drive

On the 2nd of October, 2021, the coordinators of all the cultural teams visited Asha Niketan a
home for the mentally challenged. Due to COVID-19 and social distancing protocols we had only
30 minutes to interact with the members of the house. In the course of those 30 minutes we
performed a medley of songs and danced along for them, they were entertained and even sang
along with us. We also conducted a few games. Once the 30 minutes were over the lady in
charge of the house took us to the room where the members of the house make and sell candles to
raise funds for their cause, The beautiful work handmade by people moved us and we helped them raise
more funds by purchasing a larger number of candles made by them
Kalotsav 2021.

KALOTSAV the biggest intra- collegiate cultural took place on the 28th, 29th & 30th of October 2021 that
spells energy and action with its aims to provide a platform for students to unearth new talents, nurture
the existing ones or just express one’s inner self. Kalotsav comprised of 50 events and these events
happened over 3 days, Each day had different themes that the students were required to follow, "Ethnic",
Y2K and Halloween were the themes on the three days respectively.
