Position Title: Senior/Lead Pastor

Job Summary
The senior or lead pastor is appointed by the local field to oversee the affairs of the
local church or district (group of local churches). The senior / lead pastor is ordained
or is preparing for ordination. The pastor is not nominated or elected by the church
but appointed by the conference/mission executive committee, which may be
changed at any time.

Duties and Responsibilities


1. The pastor is to be the congregation’s spiritual leader and advisor.
2. The pastor is to instruct and train others in their duties and plan with them for
all lines of church work and activity.
3. The pastor is a member of the church board and serves as its chairperson. In his
absence, an elder serves as chairperson in consultation with the pastor.
4. The pastor, with the assistance of elders, is expected to plan for and lead out in
all spiritual services, such as Sabbath morning worship and prayer meeting, and
should officiate at the communion service and baptism.
5. The pastor is expected to cooperate with the locally elected church officers.
6. The pastor is to model and train members in evangelism, assimilation, and all
systems of the church.

Expectations
Spiritual maturity: The pastor is expected to model a deepening relationship with
Christ through prayerful dependence, studying scripture, having a missionary mind-
set, intentionally creating relationships through vibrant leadership, all of which
produces living the fruit of the Spirit – Love: Joy, Peace, Patience, Kindness,
Goodness, Faithfulness, Gentleness and Self-Control.
Financial stability: The pastor is expected to lead the church through conservative
budgeting, practicing sound stewardship, preaching at least one series of sermons
a year on stewardship and encouraging the members to be faithful in their tithe
and offerings.

Confidentiality: The pastor is required to maintain an appropriate standard of


confidentiality. Any disclosures of confidential information made unlawfully
outside the proper course of duty will be treated as a serious offence.

Give and receive Accountability: The pastor is to model by example life-long


learning by actively participating in the ministerial meetings and other duly called
meetings of the local field. Send monthly ministerial report(s) by the fifteenth
(15th) of each month. Also, responsible for the timely and accurate reporting of the
statistical (departmental), secretary’s and treasurer’s reports.

Excellence: The pastor is to lead the church to do their very best in all ministries,
producing efficient and effective ministries for their members and surrounding
community.

Enthusiasm: The pastor is expected to create an atmosphere of enthusiasm for


Christ and His church (the sisterhood of churches in the local fields within the
territory of the DCU and beyond) thereby attracting in a contagious, effective way
the local communities.

Growth: The pastor is expected to grow those under his/her care through old and
new ways with the goal of increasing our sisterhood of churches and Christ’s
kingdom in the local fields within the territory of the DCU by at least the yearly
goals announced by the local field.

Qualifications/Requirements
Education: Minimum BA in Theology and a Master’s Degree (preferably an M.Div.
or M.A. in Religion)
Experience:
o Having at least 3-5 years experience as a pastor.
o Working with boards focused on fulfilling the mission and vision of Jesus.
o Supervising church leaders, such as elders, deacons, secretary, treasurer, or Bible
workers.

church(s).

talents.

Membership: in a local church within his/her employing local field. Preferably at


his local field’s church.
o Must be a Seventh-day Adventist member, in good and regular standing, within
six months, if transferring from outside this region.
o Must be willing to contribute with his tithes and offerings.
Physical Demands
Must at lease be able to effectively communicate. A medical examination will
determine whether he is physically able to successfully perform the essential
functions of this job.

Working Conditions
The Senior/Lead Pastor position requires great flexibility in hours available for
work, including evenings, weekends and holidays. The position is a full time,
salaried position and while the salary is based upon a projected 40 hours per week,
the actual number of hours required during any given week are those needed to
fulfill the responsibilities of the position. Furthermore it is recognized that the
schedule may vary at different times of the year. Pastors are expected to
speak/teach each Sabbath morning in one of their churches, with no more than
eight Sabbaths away from their pulpit(s). Pastors may select one day each week as
their day off. Typically, that day is Monday within the Curaçao Conference territory.
All employees are expected to uphold the values of the local church and the
Curaçao Conference of Seventh-day Adventists. Employees are missionaries,
demonstrating a desire and a commitment to sharing the love of Christ with guests.
