Introduction:

Professionalism is an important part of a human’s life. It is the ability of a person to focus on their
work and make decisions that benefits their employees. Implementing professionalism in a working
platform builds a strong professional reputation about ourselves hence leading to success and
excellence in the workplace. Code of ethics is the guide of principles designed to help professionals
conduct business honestly and with integrity. This article gives you a more insight about what
professionalism and code of ethics are and how to attain them with the opinion of an expert.

Professionalism:
Professionalism basically is the overall attitude that a person exhibits in a workplace. A professional
is someone who weighs the benefits of their employees before making a decision, a person who
collaborates with their colleagues and take their views into consideration, a person with the ability
to handle stress and not let it affect the way they interact with the employees around them while
following the company policies and avoiding any distractions. In order for a person to adopt
professionalism in their life they must possess reliability, humility, etiquette, neatness, organise,
thoughtfulness and empathy, work ethics, accountability, and integrity.

Competence and professionalism:


Competency is the set of demonstrative skills that allow us to do something successfully and
efficiently. The most significant competencies that are required in a working environment are
teamwork, responsibility, commercial awareness, decision making , communication, leadership,
trustworthiness and ethics, results and orientation, problem solving and organisational skills. It is a
better practise to incorporate professionalism in our lives while in university as they would have an
immense impact in the future. In order to adopt professionalism from university, one must be
proactive, face the challenges, collaborate, posses knowledge, manage their time efficiently, plan
their studies, improve research skills, enrol for extra courses, and improve social and communication
skills.

Code of Ethics:
Code of ethics is the guide created by experts to help us adopt professionalism in our lives. Ethics in
a workplace in not subjective but is clearly defined by our employers. A strong work ethic is
exhibited when a worker is committed to their work and use their utmost ability to perform job
duties. This strong work ethic can give the employee an improved job performance, higher job
satisfaction, and career advancements. The five principles to incorporate the code of ethics in our
daily lives is to make things better, treat others fairly, consider consequence of our actions, respect
other’s rights and act with integrity. Code of ethics is also applicable to buying and selling products
one of the most common examples is customer service.

Conclusion:
Dr. Mohammad Izzal Ismail the speaker of the event and a graduate of Imperial College of London
agrees that for a person to adopt professionalism and follow the code of ethics they must be able to
isolate their personal life from that of the professional life. In conclusion, following the code of
ethics and professionalism in our lives helps us to perform job duties to the best of ability. One must
analyse the needs of the future, be skilful and passionate about their work in order to have a
successful career.
