Activity Teaching notes


Group work: pronunciation
Procedure
Aim › On the board, write the four phonemic symbols: /ʧ/, /ʤ/, /ʃ/ and /ʒ/. In open
To practise consonant sounds /ʧ/, class, elicit the sound and an example word for each.

› The first activity will be for students to categorise the 32 words according
Pronunciation to which consonant sound they contain. Put students into small groups.
Consonant sounds Give each group a set of cards. While students match the words to the
phonemes, circulate and provide support as necessary. Make note of which

Make one copy of the worksheet › The easiest way to correct this activity would be to display the worksheet on
for each group. Cut up the cards. the board. Alternatively, you could hand out one copy of the worksheet (that
has not been cut up) to each group. Do some individual and choral drilling

› Now explain the game Snap!: Ask students to set aside the cards with the
Lesson link consonant sounds and shuffle the word cards. One student in each group
Unit 2, page 28 deals an equal number of cards to each player. Tell students not to look
at their cards. Each player turns over their top card at the same time and
places it face up on the table. Players have to say Snap! if two or more of
the cards contain the same consonant sound. The first player to do so and
identify the correct sound wins the cards. If there are no matches, the cards
stay on the table until someone wins them. The winner is the one with the
most cards at the end of the game. As the students play the game, circulate
and check to see their matches are correct.

Extension activity
In their groups, tell students to choose ten words they would like more practice
with. Then ask students to prepare some conversation questions related to the
themes of Unit 2 (Times Change). Students discuss the questions in their groups
and try to insert the words as naturally as they can into their conversations.
