Student Exchange Application Guide

This application guide pertains to inbound student exchange at


Tokyo City University under Program A
(credit exchange program between two universities) of the
Asia-Oceania Five Universities Alliance (AOFUA).

Students from AOFUA partner universities are able to study at Tokyo City University as
exchange students.
Program Length:
1 Semester

Please submit the required application documents through the International Office at your
Home University via email by the deadline.

Applicant Criteria:
Applicants must meet all the following criteria.
(a) be currently enrolled as a degree student at an AOFUA partner university. Students who
hold Japanese citizenship are not eligible.
(b) Undergraduate students must be in at least their third year at the time of their student
exchange.
Master’s students are eligible to apply in their first year.
(c) have an excellent academic record.
(d) have a clear goal and plan for their study.
(e) be able to secure the appropriate visa.
(f) hold one of the following English language qualifications: TOEIC 650+, IELTS 5.5+, TOEFL
iBT 60+. Students from countries where English is the official language are exempt from
this requirement.
(g) have adequate finances to meet the costs of flights, living costs in Japan and visa
application.
(h) agree to live in the international student accommodation arranged by TCU.
(i) be seeking to undertake study in the areas of engineering, information technology,
(postgraduate only) environmental and information studies.
(j) students who wish to take classes offered only in Japanese must provide proof of
Japanese language ability (Japanese Language Proficiency Test N1 or Level 1).

Students should submit “AOFUA Student Exchange Survey Form”(①+②) to the International Office at their home university until

October 30, 2021 / until March 31, 2022. TCU will examine the applications and nominate candidates. Only students nominated as

candidates should submit the documents listed on page 4 via email until November 12, 2021 / until April 30, 2022. Regarding the nomination

process please refer to the “AOFUA Exchange Program Guideline 2022”.

Costs:
(a) Application fees and tuition at TCU are waived for exchange students based on the
AOFUA Student Exchange Agreement with the partner university.
(b) Students will need to pay for their own flights, visa and living costs in Japan.
(c) Tokyo City University will waive fees for TCU designated student accommodation.
Students who choose not to live in the TCU designated accommodation are responsible
for all of their accommodation expenses.
(d) Students will need to pay for textbooks and any other materials required in class.
Other conditions:
Students are not permitted to engage in part-time work and are not eligible to apply for
“Permission to Engage in Activity other than that Permitted under the Status of Residence
Previously Granted.”
Subjects:
Depending on their year level, students receive research supervision for either their senior
thesis or a research project. Students will also be expected to take several subjects. A list of
the subjects available in English is included in this guide.
Other:
TCU can arrange airport pickup, and assistance with administrative procedures such as
residence cards, bank accounts and health insurance. This service must be arranged in
advance and a fee will be charged.

Application Documents
Students seeking admission as exchange students must submit the following documents per
mail. TCU will request the submission of the documents (including documents in original as
listed below) per mail after the notice of admission.

When submitting documents written in a language other than Japanese or English, please attach
Japanese or English translations.

provide the necessary information.
* If the applicant receives a scholarship please submit an outline of the scholarship.

How to Apply for a Certificate of Eligibility

Anyone wishing to live in Japan who does not hold Japanese citizenship or permanent
residency must acquire the relevant residence status (visa) for the activity they plan to
undertake in Japan. Students who are studying at a Japanese university need to apply for the
“Student” category.

Exchange students applying for the Certificate of Eligibility will go through the following
processes.

1. Prospective students should complete all required fields of the “Application for Certificate
of Eligibility” and submit it to Tokyo City University.

2. Tokyo City University will submit the application to its local Immigration Bureau of Japan
on your behalf.

3. Tokyo City University will receive your Certificate of Eligibility and post it to your
university. It may take up to three months from application to receiving the Certificate of
Eligibility.

4. Once you have received your Certificate of Eligibility, you should apply for your visa
(category: student) at your closest Japanese Embassy or Consulate. You will need your
passport and other documentation may be required.
* Please check with your closest Japanese Embassy or Consulate about what
documentation is required and how long it is expected to take until the visa is granted.

Once your visa is granted, you will be given the appropriate residence status upon arrival in
Japan. You must have a visa in order to enter Japan. If a visa is not granted, or is significantly
delayed, your acceptance to Tokyo City University will be cancelled.

Name of the Program Asia-Oceania Five Universities Alliance Program A


Program Contents and Applicants will spend one semester affiliated with the laboratory of their nominated
supervisor and receive research supervision in either a senior thesis (Undergraduate) or
Subjects
research project (Undergraduate/Graduate) as well as taking classes in the areas specified
below.
1. ① Undergraduate students will choose between senior thesis (3 credits) or
research project (2 credits).
② Graduate students will receive research supervision in a research project
(3 credits).
2. Students can register for up to 12 credits of classes.
3. Students should register for a minimum of 6 credits of classes.
4. The maximum number of credits students can register for in total is 15
(including senior thesis/research project).
Students should choose their subjects from the list of the subjects offered in English under
the guidance and permission of their supervisor.
Areas with specialist subjects available are mechanical and mechanical systems engineering;
nuclear safety engineering; electrical/information/network engineering; chemical/medical
engineering; architecture and urban civil engineering; environmental and information studies
(postgraduate only).
Students cannot register for classes of a higher year level than their current year of study at
the start of the exchange program.

Supervision Tokyo City University will determine each student’s supervisor and laboratory affiliation
(as well as sub-advisor when required), and inform each student.
Students are asked to specify the desired laboratory and respective supervising professor
under which they would like to study. For an overview of the available laboratories please
refer to “List of Laboratories for Program A” (p. 13-24).
Research Fields and Topics Student laboratory affiliation, research area and topic will be decided and approved through
consultation with the student’s supervisor at Tokyo City University.
Certificates and Transcripts Students will be presented with a certificate of completion.
Students will receive an official transcript of their grades.
Students should consult with their home university about credit transfer beforehand.
Credit transfer: Credits gained from Tokyo City University will be transferred to the
student’s home university using the UMAP Credit Transfer Scheme.

1 UCTS = 38-48 hours of student workload including 13-16 hours of academic hours of
instruction. 1 credit at Tokyo City University is equivalent to one UCTS.
Visas Tokyo City University will assist with application for the Certificate of Eligibility.
Student Status and Rights at 1. Student status at Tokyo City University will be “Exchange Student” according to the
agreement with the partner university.

as the library and university Wi-Fi.
