SECTION A: Essay (50)


SECTION B: Longer Transactional Text (30)
SECTION C: Shorter Text – Transactional/Referential/Informational (20)

2. Answer ONE question from EACH section.

3. Write in the language in which you are being assessed.

4. Start EACH section on a NEW page.

5. Plan (e.g. a mind map/diagram/flow chart/key words), edit and proofread your
work. The plan must appear BEFORE the answer.

6. All planning must be clearly indicated as such.

7. Use the following time frames as a guideline:

SECTION A: 80 minutes
SECTION B: 40 minutes
SECTION C: 30 minutes

8. Number each response as the topics are numbered in this question paper.

9. Write down the title/heading of each response. Give your own title/heading if
one has not been provided.

NOTE: The title/heading must NOT be included when doing a word count.

QUESTION 1

• Spend approximately 80 minutes on this section.

• Write an essay of between 250 and 300 words in length (1 to 1½ pages) on ONE
of the following topics.

• Write down the number and title of the essay you have chosen, for example

• Give your own title if your choice is QUESTION 1.2, 1.7.1 or 1.7.2.

1.7 Choose ONE of the pictures on the next page and write an essay on a topic
that comes to mind. Write the question number (1.7.1 or 1.7.2) and give your
essay a suitable title.

have chosen.

SECTION B: LONGER TRANSACTIONAL TEXT

QUESTION 2

• Spend approximately 40 minutes on this section.

• Respond to ONE of the following transactional writing tasks.

• The body of your response should be between 120 and 150 words in length
(about 12 to 15 lines).

• Write down the number and the heading of the text you have chosen, for example

• Pay particular attention to format, language and register.

2.1 FRIENDLY LETTER

Your best friend recently arranged a surprise party for you.

Write a letter to thank your friend. [30]

2.2 FORMAL REPORT

You are the secretary of a youth group in your community. This group is not
pleased with the services that the public library offers. You have discussed
the matter with the Chief Librarian. She/He has requested a formal report.

Write out the report. [30]

2.3 MAGAZINE ARTICLE

A popular magazine is running a competition that requires entrants to write an


article entitled: 'Tips for Teenagers to Stay Fit and Healthy.' You have decided
to enter this competition.

Write the article that you will submit. [30]

2.4 INTERVIEW

A former learner of your school has achieved great success in his/her career.
As editor of your school magazine, you have decided to conduct an interview
with this person. This interview will be published in your school magazine to
inspire learners.

Write out the interview that takes place between the two of you.

SECTION C: SHORTER TEXT – TRANSACTIONAL/REFERENTIAL/INFORMATIONAL

QUESTION 3

• Spend approximately 30 minutes on this section.

• Choose ONE of the following topics and write a short text.

• The body of your response should be between 80 and 100 words in length
(about 8 to 10 lines).

• Write down the number and the heading of the text you have chosen, for example
3.1 Advertisement

3.1 ADVERTISEMENT

Many learners are experiencing difficulties in the subject English. Since you
are an outstanding learner in English, you have decided to advertise your
services for extra lessons on the school notice board.

Write out the advertisement.

NOTE: Do NOT include illustrations or drawings. [20]

3.2 POSTCARD

You are studying in another province. You have heard that your grandmother
is concerned about your well-being and progress in your studies.

Write the text of the postcard that you will send her. [20]

3.3 DIRECTIONS

You belong to a sports club that is organising a fun-run to celebrate


International Mandela Day. You have been asked to provide directions that
participants will follow during this event. The fun-run will start at the sports
club and end at your school.

Write the directions for the fun-run.

NOTE:
• In your response, you must include some distances, turns and
landmarks. Do not include sketches or maps.
• If you live in an urban area, include landmarks like a fast-food outlet, an
intersection or a park.
• If you live in a rural area, include prominent features like a bridge, a river
or a road sign. [20]
