CAESAR II can be installed on as many computers/workstations as required. Concurrent access and use of the
software is controlled by licensing (Intergraph Smart Licensing (ISL)).
If only a license of a CAESAR II product is purchased, can this be used on more than one computer?
Yes, but only one license can be used at any one time.
No, CAESAR II licenses can be used by any user, maximizing license use.
Can new and old versions of CAESAR II be run in parallel on the same computer?
No, analysis models can be opened only in the version Yes, providing the system offers the required
of CAESAR II originally used to create them and later resources and meets the minimum software and
versions of the software. hardware requirements that CAESAR II needs to work
efficiently.
Note: Hexagon does not officially support use of CAESAR II on virtualized systems.
Licensing
All Hexagon products, CAESAR II included, are licensed by Hexagon’s cloud-based licensing solution - Intergraph
Smart Licensing (ISL).
Intergraph Smart Licensing Client and a Configuration Connection Information (.CCI) file are installed on each
workstation that needs to access licenses in the cloud. The Configuration Connection Information (.CCI) file provides
a handshake between the software product, Intergraph Smart Licensing Client, and the cloud licensing server,
enabling software users to request and return license when they start or exit the software product(s) they are using.
The initial .CCI file issued to a new customer is usually named ‘Site ID.CCI’, e.g., 00123456.CCI. This file is generated
for a site-based Keystore, i.e., a Keystore containing all licenses of all products purchased. If product licenses need
to be deployed differently, for example, some of the total licenses for various products held by the customer need to
be allocated for use on a specific project; then a project-based configuration must be created in the PPM Licensing
Portal. Doing so results in additional keystores being created, and so two or more CCI files being used to access
licenses in the cloud.
Consult online help for further information about Intergraph Smart Licensing (ISL).
https://docs.hexagonppm.com
CAESAR II licenses are ‘CX’ type, meaning they can be used 24hrs per day / 7 days per week / 365 days per year.
For further information about this and other license types supplied by Hexagon, refer to the End User License
Agreement (EULA) included with the software installation media.
Intergraph Smart Licensing (ISL) works in parallel with the PPM Licensing Portal. This is an online self-service
system that IT personnel/license administrators can use to manage the configuration and deployment of their
Hexagon product licenses. Customers are encouraged to use PPM Licensing Portal to self-manage their licenses.
Online help covering license administration is provided inside the portal.
Intergraph Smart Licensing (ISL) is cloud-based, so an Internet connection is always needed to access licenses in
the cloud when using a computer in the office connected to the company’s network. The exception is when licenses
are to be used remotely, away from the office. Licenses temporarily checked-out to a mobile computer will work
without an Internet connection.
Yes, providing Offline Availability has been set on the licenses in PPM Licensing Portal. Offline Availability is what
controls license check-out via the ISL Client. This ISL feature is configured inside the PPM Licensing Portal.
When Intergraph Smart Licensing Client is installed, if Offline Availability has been configured, it is possible to use
the Check-out option to check out one or more product licenses so that they can be used on a mobile computer. The
licenses (product tags) available to check out are displayed on the ‘Check-out’ tab.
Note. Offline Availability is not set by default on site-based configurations; your IT administrator/license
administrator must enable this before licenses can be checked out and used on mobile computers.
Check-in is used to return licenses to the cloud license server when the mobile computer is returned to the office
and connected to the network when it has Internet access.
While checking out, licenses active on a roaming computer are unavailable for office-based users to use. They
become available again when the licenses are checked in.
Yes, license usage reporting is available inside the PPM Licensing Portal. Reporting enables IT administrators/
license administrators to understand how your organization is using licenses. Having this visibility of how licenses
are used enables them to determine who is using the licenses, check peak license usage, understand how to
optimize the use of licenses, identify if additional licenses are required, etc.

Q.A./Certification
Yes. CAESAR II is tested in accordance with the Hexagon PPM Quality Assurance Program as presented in the Hexagon
Nuclear and Safety Quality Assurance Program Guide, Revision 1.1, May 2021.
All versions of CAESAR II are developed and maintained under a Quality Assurance Program to comply with the
applicable ASME NQA-1 standard, along with 10 CFR Part 21 (U.S. NRC reporting) and U.S. 10 CFR Part 50 Appendix B
(Q.A. reporting). Additionally, the CADWorx & Analysis organization that develops and maintains the CAESAR II product is
conformant with Hexagon’s division-certified ISO 9001 Quality Management System.
Yes. The certificate is usually installed to C:\Program Files (x86)\Intergraph CAS\CAESAR II vXX\C2_Docu folder. It is also
accessible via the Help ribbon.
Hexagon CAS developed a quality assurance package, which compares the numerical output between different versions
and records the discrepancies. CAESAR II Verification and Validation guide serve as a publicly available verification
document. This Validation and Verification Guide details Hexagon CAS QA standards, provides benchmark jobs, and
instructs users on executing Q.A. benchmarks on their own hardware. The benchmark jobs include comparisons to
published data by ASME, NRC, and other sources. Checking updated version results to previously verified results
enables you to justify program errors and maintain high product quality. You can view the output on your monitor, print
it, or save it. The CAESAR II Validation and Verification Guide include more than 50 benchmark jobs. These benchmarks
are for use on your local computer, and then compare them against distributed output to verify the operation of the
CAESAR II software.
Key functionality
Design codes
At this time, CAESAR II supports 38 international piping codes are added to software depending upon business
needs.
RCC-M C
With specific codes, yes, it is possible. For example, ISO 14692 (Fibreglass piping) edition 2005 or 2017 can be
selected or DNV offshore the 1996 edition (Allowable Stress method) can be selected or the latest DNVGL-ST-F101
(LFRD method).
Starting with CAESAR II v13, most supported piping codes will be maintained in multiple editions by the CAESAR II
product. For example, CAESAR II v13 supports ASME B31.3:2018 and B31.3:2020. And when the next B31.3 edition is
released, CAESAR II will be updated to support all three editions.
With B31J now becoming mandatory in the latest editions of the piping codes, B31J is being moved into the main
CAESAR II product (v13, September 2022). It will be available for all metallic piping codes – not just ASME.
Does the software incorporate data for valves and flanges according to ASME and EN standards?
Yes.

Modeling
Can CAESAR II model plastic (isotropic) piping (e.g., PVC, HDPE, LDPE, etc.)?
The short answer is no. The longer answer is yes, but only with great caution. CAESAR II does not include any
specific plastic piping standards, nor any plastic materials are available in the material database.
However, B31.1 includes Non-mandatory Appendix III, entitled “Rules for Non-metallic Piping and Piping Lined with
Non-metals.” The engineer must be happy that they can demonstrate elastic behavior using paragraphs (III-2.5). If
so, CAESAR II should be used with caution. A custom material must be created, and users must be careful to ensure
that Bourdon Effects are activated, as the bourdon effects are much more prevalent in plastic piping vs. steel.
Yes. CAESAR II includes several FRP piping codes, including ISO 14692. Several FRP materials are available to use in
conjunction with the FRP-specific codes to allow the specification of the failure envelope.
Yes. CAESAR II includes ASME B&PV Code Section III and RCC-M piping codes for analysis of pipelines in a nuclear
site. CAESAR II is developed and supported in a process compliant with ASME NQA-1 Quality software. CAESAR II
includes Class C and Class D analysis for nuclear piping (ASME NC and ASME ND/RCC-M C and RCCM-D). Users in
regulated industries such as Nuclear can also purchase QA reporting to comply with the 10 CFR Part 50 App. B and
10 CFR Part 21.
For Class B nuclear piping, the complementary Hexagon software PIPESTRESS is available.
Yes. CAESAR II includes Static and Dynamic analysis capabilities as standard. Dynamic capabilities include Modal,
Response Spectrum, Harmonic, and Time History analysis.
Weight, Temperature, Pressure, applied Displacements, Applied Forces, Uniform loads, Wind Loads, Wave Loads,
and Cold Spring.
CAESAR II includes Static Load Case Editor (SLCE), which offers extensive capabilities to create and modify load
cases and combinations thereof.
Does CAESAR II include libraries/catalogs for spring hangers, expansion joints, etc.?
Yes, many manufacturers’ catalogs for spring hangers and expansion joints are available within the software as
standard.
Yes. A joint expansion modeler can do this automatically using the supplied catalog data. Or the expansion joint/tie
rods/hinges can be modeled manually.
Yes. A material database editor is provided, and any customized materials can be stored in a shared location for all
users to access.
Yes. The model can be shaded/colored to identify any property and where it is applied to the model. For example,
shade the model based upon temperature, material, etc.
Different data views are available: tabular (Lists) by “input type/auxiliary” and Spreadsheet (per element with all
properties visible).
Yes. CAESAR II includes several transmission and distribution codes suitable for this. In addition, a Buried Pipe
module is available where users can enter the soil properties and specify whether the pipeline is above/below
ground. CAESAR II will “bury” the pipeline by adding appropriate soil restraints. Further, CAESAR II includes a
buckling calculator in accordance with B31.8.
Yes. Various offshore codes are available - such as BS PD 8010-2 or DNVGL-ST-F101 – and also “offshore” chapters
of ASME B31.4 (Ch. IX) and B31.8 (Ch. VIII). The piping model can be submerged, and wave/current loadings applied.
In the case of using DNVGL-ST-F101 buckling, burst and collapse checks are also performed, as well as the Load
Interaction calculations.
Yes, uniform loads can be entered as force/unit length for snow/ice loadings.
Not directly – there is no specific “Blast” input. For piping, the blast load is often used to calculate the blast drag
load and convert it to a blast drag load per unit length of the pipe. Various practices are recommended for this –
such as DNVGL-RP-101, which suggests that a conservative rule of thumb in early design studies is assuming that the
drag pressure is 1/3 of the blast overpressure.
This drag load per unit length can be entered as a uniform load in CAESAR II.
Does CAESAR II offer support for vacuum conditions in certain design situations?
No. As CAESAR II is primarily a beam element program, it does not address negative pressure. Failure due to vacuum
pressure is primarily because of buckling and so not compatible with beam elements.
Yes. Multiple piping codes can be used in a single model. To do this, select the first piping code required on the first
element and then use the “Allowable Stress” check box to access the piping code drop-down list whenever the
piping code changes. Take care to select an appropriate material for each piping code when changing codes.
How can I specify an accurate, flexible nozzle connection instead of a rigid anchor/applied displacements?
Nozzle flexibilities can be defined easily in CAESAR II. Nozzle Flexibilities can be derived in CAESAR II using WRC297,
API650, or PD5500 methods. In addition, Custom nozzle flexibilities can be specified if these have been computed
externally (e.g., through Finite Element Analysis). The Custom option allows the user to enter in-plane and out-plane
bending stiffnesses (along with torsional and axial) directly, avoiding the need for identifying which of the global
axes relates to in-plane, out-plane, etc.
When defining a nozzle connection, check the “Nozzle Flex.” Check the box to access the input auxiliary pane where
the parameters can be input.
Yes. CAESAR II includes an Equipment Analysis module where loads on nozzles can be checked according to various
standards depending on the type of equipment.(API-610, API-617, API-661, API-650, HEI and NEMA-SM23).
In addition to this module, an “inline” nozzle check can be performed by comparing the computed loads at a given
node number against a set of allowable values specified by the user. This is performed during the usual static
analysis run. Comparison methods available are Absolute, SRSS, and Unity Check. The allowable loads may also be
entered in an external file and restored by a single click if used regularly.
Yes. CAESAR II includes an “inline” flange check capability. This method evaluates the flanges using either the
Kellogg Equivalent Pressure Method or the ASME B&PVC Section III Subsection NC-3658.3. Either method will
evaluate the flange against the specified limits performed during the usual static analysis run for any selected
flanges.
In addition, for a more accurate flange analysis method, CAESAR II also includes the EN-1591 flange analysis method,
which can be accessed from the EN-1591 Flanges module. This method can import loads for the required load cases
from the static analysis run for the specified node number (Operating/Design, Test, and Install cases are required as
a minimum by EN-1591).
Yes. While CAESAR II performs all calculations internally in US Customary units, for input and output of any data,
CAESAR II can use any required unit. You can create your custom unit files in addition to the supplied units files.
Users can select any unit they require for any parameter, including specifying their custom unit conversion factor
and units field label.
Yes. The default vertical axis in CAESAR II is the Y-axis, typical of analysis tools. However, a CAD or Plant Design
system typically uses the vertical Z-axis. To alleviate potential confusion, CAESAR II can optionally use the Z-axis as
vertical to match a CAD system. Additionally, the North direction in CAESAR II is also customizable and can be set
also to match your design tool.
In cases of excessive stress or restraint loads (such as on a nozzle connection), adding an expansion loop is a simple
and effective resolution method. CAESAR II can assist with sizing the expansion loop by using the Optimization
Wizard. This tool will automatically build a suitable expansion loop, using a target value (either stress or restraint
load in a selected load case) along with a specified location and space envelope. After trying the largest loop size
possible, if the user-specified target value can be achieved, CAESAR II then iterates to find the most efficient loop
possible (using the least amount of pipe and bends) to achieve that target, before finally altering the piping model to
insert the loop. The user has complete control of the type and orientation of the loop, as well as having the option
to specify a vertical section and a bend cost ratio to ensure CAESAR II proposes the most efficient and economical
loop design.
Does CAESAR II integrate with CADWorx? Does CAESAR II integrate with design solutions
provided by pipe support vendors?
Yes. CAESAR II has a bi-directional link with CADWorx.
Model the pipeline in CADWorx, specifying materials Yes. CAESAR II can export the input and results data

Yes. PRG’s FEATools software was designed for CAESAR II up to and including v12. FEATools can read in a CAESAR II
model and identify any tees and bends, including bends where trunnions have been attached. These tees and bends
are automatically converted to Finite Element Models, and FEA is run to obtain accurate SIF and flexibility values.
These values are then automatically applied to the CAESAR II model, resulting in a more accurate piping analysis
model.
The same process can also be performed for vessel/exchanger nozzles or API661 type header box nozzles – the
basic shell/nozzle type and geometry must be entered by the user; typically, this is only a handful of values.
Features can also evaluate pipe shoes and nozzles to check that loads are not excessive. An extensive library of pipe
shoes is supplied with FEATools, with the ability to use a NozzlePRO model for a customized pipe shoe. Loading from
CAESAR II restraints can be automatically applied to the shoe/nozzle and evaluated using FEA.
Yes. DRG’s BOSfluids have a bi-directional interface with CAESAR II. BOSfluids can import a CAESAR II model to
create the fluid flow model. BOSfluids’ unique 3D modeling approach to fluid flow calculations means that this
automatically generates the flow model.
Information necessary for the flow analysis (e.g. valve closure curves, pump curves etc.) can be entered in
BOSfluids. If the CAESAR II model changes, this information is not lost. BOSfluids, can import the changed model
and identify the differences, only updating the flow model with the changes.
Once the transient flow analysis has been run, the results can be transferred back to CAESAR II for dynamic analysis
to be performed. BOSfluids. can generate the force vs. time profiles used in the dynamic analysis, locating the force
pairs at the appropriate nodes, because the flow model was generated from the mechanical model. BOSfluids, can
also generate the full dynamic input required for CAESAR II – meaning that in CAESAR II, all that is required is to
open the file and set the dynamic analysis parameters (e.g., analysis duration, time steps, etc.).
BOSfluids can also generate a CAESAR II neutral file, so should there be any changes made to the geometry, for
whatever reason, the flow model can be transferred back to CAESAR II.
Deliverables
Yes. Custom reports can be created – any data that CAESAR II calculates can be added to a custom report.
Reports containing the input and output results from the analysis can be produced in plain text, Word, Excel, or PDF
format. Additional information is also available via MDB (MS Access database) and XML formats.
Yes. CAESAR II also includes I-Configure, a graphical tool to configure isometric styles.
Isogen, supplied with the CAESAR II product, enables .dwg to be saved as .pdf.
